"The Fire Salamander or European salamander is easily recognisable by its striking black and yellow markings which serve as a warning to potential predators, using the toxic alkaloid called salamandrin which is secreted by the salamanders rubbery skin. This type of colouration is known as warning or aposematic colouration.

The salamander is a nocturnal animal of the European forest where it spends the day in the damp leaf litter or in holes and crevices in tree trunks or under stones. They usually emerge at night when it is cool and damp although after rain they will come out in the daylight to hunt food.

Like all salamanders, the fire salamander is a carnivore feeding on worms, slugs and insects. The will occasionally take tadpoles and small frogs and newts"...

The term salamander originates from an Arabic term meaning ‘lives in fire’ as it was believed that salamanders were born in fire.

This myth was probably based on the fact that salamanders hibernating in hollow logs crawled out when the logs were put on the fire...

My preffered substrate for bioactive setups..

Arcadia earth mix, brilliant option for setups where mixing your own substrate wouldn't be very cost effective. Much more beneficial to the living tanks than using just coco fibre.

Not just for aquariums! I use these to provide "daylight" for plant growth in bioactive enclosures, for my diurnal and nocturnal reptiles/amphibians where a high UV isn't necessary.

Great choice for you tortoise owners, I know it's a struggle and potentially risky task picking wild weeds (especially in the colder months) and not all tortoises seem to take to pellets very easily. 🐢

Many people may think that as a vast majority of reptiles come from hotter climates that they can withstand a lack of water, and this may be true to some extent but proper hydration is just as important to them as you and me.

Dehydration has many negative effects on reptiles’ health and wellbeing:

-Decreases organ function
-Impairs skin health and the shedding process
-Decreases digestive motility
-Diminishes the body’s ability to remove metabolic wastes
-May affect assimilation of water-soluble vitamins
-Decreases appetite
-Decreases activity
-Even minor dehydration (hypohydration) negatively affects a reptile’s health. But chronic dehydration is likely to result in severe health problems such as impaction, gout, and kidney failure.

Clean fresh drinking water should always be offered to your animals, but this can sometimes be difficult as there are certain species that refuse to drink still water from a bowl. (Such as many chameleons and anoles).

Regular misting with a hand pump will ensure that there are water droplets on plants and hardscape for your animals to drink, this will also raise the humidity which is necessary for many things such as shedding skin.

I like to automate my misting to remove the human error and make sure my animals are receiving the right amount of hydration and humidity for their species..
