FLOODING - No not water!

When we have a puppy or dog that is scared of something, people often try their best to help their dogs by "getting them out there",

It's understandable that in our heads if we keep showing them what worries them, then our dogs will quickly realise the scary thing is not really a threat and they will quickly learn it's OK.

Exposure until the dog appears to stop reacting was used a lot in the "good ole days".

Thankfully, science showed the flaws in this process and those professionals who stay current and up to date with their knowledge took note.

Sceario: You have a puppy who is afraid of other dogs. Flooding and human thinking says take them to a class or social playgroup, best way to help them is fun with other dogs right?

Puppy looks very scared for the first 10 minutes or so then may seem to relax a little....success!

The next week the same happens again, clearly, the pup has relaxed each week so this is good right?

Unlikely!!

Just because the peak of the stress lowers after 10 minutes by continuing on this pathway of facing your fears, the neural pathway in the brain is triggered every time, to keep triggering it is to make that pathway deeper and stronger.

In human terms, what are you scared of?
For me, it's a few things but spiders are one.

If someone kept shutting me in a room of spiders I would be at peak stress level, but that would wear down a little over time,, it's a natural body reaction.

Ask yourself this though, are you actually doing anything to resolve my fear of the spiders, or each time I see them will my stress levels peak?

Could this exposure make me freak out more?

Maybe if you keep doing this I shut down my responses and stop reacting because what is the point, but am I ok about the spiders?

Also, how am I starting to view you, are you trustworthy, should I feel insecure around you?

If your puppy or dog is worried, my job as a qualified Behaviourist is NOT to lose your dog or puppy's trust, my job is to build it.

My job is to help you make good choices so your dog sees you as a safety net.

There are so many ways we can help and support our dogs and it doesn't involve throwing them to the sharks.

Build bridges don't blast them!!

My choice not my burden!

It's bloody tough being a canine caregiver, getting it right all the time is impossible, but learning and growing together as a team is nearly always possible.

We must however remember that our dogs did not ask to come and live with us, they probably had absolutely no choice in the matter, we made that choice for them.

But what happens if our dog struggles ??

If we are in a situation and we are frustrated or annoyed, scared, upset, or angry we have choices.

We can talk, we can shout, we can get support and ultimately we can leave

So what do our dogs do.......they try their best to cope.

How that coping looks depends very much on the dog.

They may be clingy, they may be excitable, they may be destructive, they may be depressed,, aggressive, poorly in health, and lots lots more but they do not try to be a burden.

I know times are hard, I know financially it's tough for many people right now, but our dogs mental welfare is often not seen as a priority when it comes to people's funds.

Holidays, hairdressers, home improvments, gym memberships, wedding funds, heck a £250 plumbing call out charge or a £100 dog bed is often not thought about in as much depth as whether to spend money on support for our dogs.

Spending money on reputable and qualified behavioral support is scrutinised far more and often sadly at the bottom of the list if ever even on it.

I've had lovely clients spend HUGE amounts of money on gimmicks and so called quick fixes before biting the bullet and seeking reputable support, often the comment is, i just wish I had come to you sooner.

It would be amazing if we could stop and reevaluate our thought process on the value of support.

It would be amazing if we could start to recognise the huge impact a reputable professional can have.

A client recently said that working with me was like having a team of superheros around her and her dog.....I LOVED THIS!!

If your dog is struggling with something in life we owe it to them to help them.

A reputable professional isn't cheap ( nor are some of the not so reputable ones)

Finding a reputable professional is minefield and daunting, I totally understand how much it takes to make that call.

Sadly lots of people out there will take your money who do not have the skills to help, so be careful who you choose, but if your dog needs support PLEASE choose to help them.

They are YOUR choice and they don't try to be your burden, they just try to cope the best they can!

The image below is such a wonderfully powerful image, I think.

It really highlights the power that stepping back and not repeating the same process over and over again can have.

When our dogs face struggles in life its understandable for people to hope it will stop, hope they grow out of it, hope they just get used it.

Very often though that isn't the case and the behaviour can become worse, much worse.

The repeated behaviour then becomes ingrained, it deepens and strengthens the neural pathway formed in the brain associated with that situation.

Avoidance is often seen as " whats the point", or " hows that going to help or get them used to it".

To a degree people are right, it's not going to "get them used to it" ( or unlikely) but oh boy it can absolutely help.

Avoidance where possible, until you feel brave enough to reach out for reputable help, is much better than keep making the dog face his or her worries head on repeatedly ( known as flooding for anyone who likes a label)

Avoidance allows the brain, body and all the chemicals to reduce down.

Avoidance helps by showing your dog you understand, and you are a safety net, someone who has their back.

Avoidance is powerful!!

I am afraid of spiders, or if you want a more interesting laugh also cotton wool ( pulling a grimace face as typing that)

I can tell you, keep shoving either of those in my face it is very likely you will have me eventually reacting and loosing trust in you.

Be a part of the solution, not the problem 🥰

Observation before interpretation!!

There are so many amazing human canine relationships/partnerships all over the world.

The most favoured companion animal is a dog and yet although they feature in human lives so heavily they are so very often misunderstood or not even heard.

Very often this is totally uninetional as most caregivers want to provide the best life possible to their canine companions.

It is however imperative that in order to open up those lines of communication we learn how to listen with our eyes.

What we need to learn is HOW TO OBSERVE!

Being able to take down the information our dogs are giving without muddying the message is a skill anyone can learn, we just need to see the value in learning it.

How would you feel if you lived a life never being heard or listened too?

The upset, the frustration, the anger, the sadness that would likely cause a human is undeniable....yet this is something our wonderful dogs face daily.

Yet, because our dogs are so forgiving of us, we just don't see the struggles and frustrations our dogs face as easily.

The puppy that sits down outside on walks that is labelled stubborn is very often a puppy overwhelmed and trying to process information.

The dog that barks and lunges and is labelled aggressive or naughty is a dog that is actually in pain.

The dog that shreds its bed and toys that seems funny and somewhat annoying is a dog that is frustrated.

The dog that junps up that just need to be "taught some manners" is actually a dog that is very anxious and seeking reassurance.

Labelling behaviours incorrectly can be so detrimental yet we just don't see the value in taking just a little time to educate ourselves.

You don't need to be an expert, you don't need all the heavy duty jargon, you already have the skill, you just dont know it yet and, its just needs an opportunity to shine.

Watch this space for more info coming soon.

Don't keep trying to fit a square peg into a round hole!!

The picture below is one of my dogs, Rodney.

Rodney has 2 brothers Derek and Denzel and a sister Marlene ( guess the theme)

All the puppies in this litter stayed with me, I bred a litter with the intention of keeping them all if there were 4 and taaaadaaah, I was gifted this amazing litter.

These 4 have had the same upbringing, in the same home, no big dramas in their lives, life has been pretty safe and consistent for these guys.

The pups ( now 2 but are still the pups lol) live with 9 other dogs which include their mum, their dad, and their auntie, they have a family unit they have never been torn away from ( i feel very proud of this achievement, although my gin bill was VERY high raising them, boy it was stressful!!

Why do I tell you this??

Because ask anyone on here that knows me and my dogs personally and Rodney is "different".

He doesn't process the world in the same way his siblings do. He has what I described as sensory overload at times.

I can see his brain going 100 miles an hour at the most simple of things like me picking up keys, and he is 100 miles an hour or asleep, and boy does he like cute when he is sleeping, processing all the trouble he caused that day lol.

THIS IS RODNEY!!!, THIS IS MY RODNEY!!!, AND I LOVE HIM!!!

So, do I make Rodney conform to the dog that I had visions of him being, OR to the way his brothers and sisters behave?

Why would I, he isn't them, he is Rodney?

Lets look at this from a human angle, do most kids turn out to be the vision of what their parents had in their heads, probably not.

Do most parents see who their child becomes and then support them in being the best version of who they are, well I hope so because that's good parenting?

So why do we constantly expect our dogs to fit into what WE decide WE want them to be?

I will never take Rodney to a pub for example because it would blow his mind, but that's ok, that's what is best for him and not about what I want.

I wouldn't take Rodney to a Training Class environment, because it's not what HE would do best in, other dogs can thrive in that environment but my Rodney wouldn't.

Now to be clear, I am not suggesting we avoid seeking help and support for dogs, but let's think about what the best version looks like for THAT individual dog.

Rodney is a wonderful unicorn shape peg that fits into his own unique unicorn-shaped hole, and he is all the glitter and sparkles I could ever ask for because I work damn hard at making sure Rodney is RESPECTED for the individual he is.

How a puppy or dog processes the world is very unique to that puppy or dog.

How they see the world everything in it is influenced by many factors.

Genetics, environment, age, learned experiences, and health are just a few that can play their part in shaping our dogs emotions and responses.

With this in mind, when working on Life Skills or mental wellness with puppies and dogs, do we really want to pay for a one cap fits all service?

We shouldnt take a dog that feels worried by other dogs to a dog park in the hope that it enjoys it like the other dogs do.

We should probably avoid Training classes in the hope exposure to other dogs will solve the anxiety.
Mmm let me shut you in an area with a group of the things you worry about, how is that helping?

I wouldnt start teaching a puppy to walk with a loose lead if they are worried about the outside world, instead I would look to help them feel safe first.

However, I could start to introduce walking nicely on a lead outside with a more confident pup.

I look at what THAT dog CAN cope with, what makes them feel safe and happy.

My job is to slowly build on that, always trying to ensure they stay feeling as safe, supported and happy as possible.

That relies on me recognising and respecting the fact that every canine and human I work with will learn, cope and respond like the individuals they are.

Strive to work with a reputabe professional that wants to help you get the best version possible of that individual dog not one that wants a little unemotional robot.

Many years ago I adopted 2 lovely girlies from SHCGB, now called Mouse and Laaly.

They are 11 years old now and I love the golden oldies dearly, they have been such good girls and I am grateful to have been given the chance to share all our adventures with them.

I'm thrilled to announce my business Speak Dog has teamed up with SHCGB Welfare to be able to offer ethical support that gives back to welfare too.

Please see below for more info :)

MY DOGS REACTIVE!!

When it comes to dogs we often hear common words, phrases and labels being used.

"REACTIVE" is probably one of the most commonly used phrases we now hear about someone else's dog or we may even use the label about our own dog.

When a dog reacts, they generally are reacting to a certain situation, it is not a personality trait, they are usually not reactive to everything in life, its just a feeling at that moment in time.

Many people get upset when their dog does react.

We don't want our dogs being stressed and we dont want people thinking our dog is "nasty", especially if we bump into that same person everyday so they only ever see the dogs barking and lunging and losing its sh*t, it can be embarrassing.

That snippet of our dogs behaviour though doesn't define them, it isn't what they are like all the time.

That dog that barks and snarls at other dogs on a walk is a loving soft goofball at home.

That dog barking and lunging at traffic is nothing like that away from the roads.

The dog that hides and shakes in the vets is a cheeky chappy who loves to be handled and groomed by their own humans.

So should we be labelling them REACTIVE?

Yes they react, but we are all reactive in the wrong situation?

I have a fear of the dentist, and I get tetchy, stroppy and super alert if I have to go.

I always tell them " I'm really scared and nervous about attending" because I want them to appreciate my personal feelings.

When talking about dogs, reactive is a phrase I'm really trying hard to stop using because I feel its impersonal and even is starting to have a negative attachment to it.

From conversations, when people use that label, the association to others is just a dog that barks and lunges it has no personal meaning to that dogs feelings.

We are all reactive in the wrong, situation but that doesn't define us as a person.

So what can we say instead?

Simple, be your dogs voice, tell people who they are, how they feel, what they dislike because you should know that better than anyone.

The dog that doesn't like other dogs
,
"No thanks he prefers his own company" "No thanks be feels scared by other dogs" "No thanks he doesn't like playing with other dogs"

One I use for one of my own older dogs with a back issue.

"No thanks, he is has a bad back and is in pain"

Dogs that don't like to be petted

"He isn't a fan of strangers touching him"

At the vet's

" My dog worries when he comes here, what can we do to help him feel more relaxed?

All these explanations have thoughts and feelings behind them, not just a blanket label.

You don't need to use terminologies and labels, you just need to be your dogs voice!!

Feelings over labels.

When you buy a dog from working lines.

As someone who owns 13 working Siberian Huskies I would like to think I have experience first hand in this subject matter.

Now all dogs are individuals, so even out of working lines there will be variation, that's nature ( this is also true for pet/show lines)

But it's worth considering these points before buying a dog from working lines.

Most dogs were originally bred to work in some form or another. Over the years there has become a more 'pet' type and a 'working' type ( we wont debate about that on this thread)

My rescue huskies are nothing like my pure working huskies when it comes to drive, gait and stamina when working in harness, the difference is HUGE.

A working collie who has a job on a farm herding sheep is very rarely presented to me with issues.

The working collie bought as pet however, is often presented to me because they have started to herd cars, bikes, children.

The Malinois is a great protection dog, happy when on patrol but then put that same dog in a pet environment and he is reactive and aggressive to people coming in the house.

Buying a dog isn't just about the breed, it's about all the possible breed traits that go with them and trust me a well bred working dog is likely to be very driven by those traits.

If those innate needs are not channelled and fulfilled in positive way it's highly possible you will get frustrated and undesirable backlashes in behaviour.

In the words of Jurassic Park, nature finds a way.

So when considering getting a dog, think long and hard about getting a pet dog that comes from working lines, are you fully prepared to ensure you can meet that dogs very specific needs.

Life is always better with a dog right??

Of course, but that doesn't mean that life with a Puppy or dog is always easy and it doesn't mean it always follows the visions we have in our heads.

We all need a little guidance from a reputable professional at times and sharing our lives with dogs should be no different. by doing so we all get more out of the relationship.

Speak Dog has enjoyed working closely with the veterinary community and other canine professionals for close to 15 years now.

We are proud to take a holistic and multimodule approach to your dog's mental welfare to ensure the best outcome for your dog and you.

Our reputation has been built on compassionate, upto date, and ethical, information, advice, and support.

To find out more about how we may be able to help you and your Puppy or dog please do feel free to drop us a message on our chat box or email me.

We hope to meet some of you soon!
