Spring flowers 🌷

It’s worth reminding yourself on the below 👇🏻

Spring is in the air, and whilst many of us will be enjoying lovely walks with our dogs, there are many plants and bulbs that flower during spring, which are poisonous to our canine companions 🐶. Here is a list we put together, just to name a few:

🌼 Amaryllis
🌼 Bluebells
🌼 Buttercups
🌼 Crocuses
🌼 Cyclamen (root)
🌼 Daffodils/narcissus (blubs)
🌼 Elderberry
🌼 Foxglove (leaves and seeds)
🌼 Hyacinth (bulbs)
🌼 Lupin (leaves, seeds)
🌼 Onion (causes anaemia)
🌼 Rhododendron and azalea (whole plant)
🌼 Rhubarb (leaves)
🌼 Sweetpea (stem)
🌼 Tulips
🌼 Wild cherry tree (twigs and foliage)
🌼 Yew (berries and foliage)

If you think your dog has eaten any of these plants, please contact your vet immediately.

This does makes me chuckle every time I see it 🤣! All jokes aside though, it’s an important reason to train a good recall 🦌 🦌🦌🦌🦌

Helping owners and their dogs to live in harmony and work as a team brings me so much joy.

I am always elated at lovely reviews I receive because you often generally hear from clients when things aren’t quite going to plan.

Training doesn’t just happen overnight it takes time, dedication and consistency.

Start today! You’ve got this✨

The Martin Family have been a real pleasure to work with throughout the Puppy & Foundation Life Skills Course and they are soon to be starting the Fun Gundog Foundation Training Course.

Beautiful Mabel, Sprocker x Poodle, a rescue pup from Northern Island joined them at 5.5 months. The want her to be a happy, confident and well rounded girl so a good level of general obedience, an outlet for her natural desires/ instincts and confidence building is key to success in achieving this. They are dedicated to her training and practise activities set in class each week ✨

On Sundays we do breakfast 🧇 ☕️ - all in aid of puppy socialisation of course 💁🏼‍♀️🤭

We visited a pub garden the day before which was fairly quiet so this busy cafe was the next step.

This dog friendly cafe had lots going on - lots of people (adults & children), noises of the coffee machine and various dogs barking at different points too. On entry to the cafe, there was an automatic door which was also a new experience for her.

We ensured she had been toileted prior to going in and had a leg stretch, we took a small piece of vet bed and a chew too. I asked if we could have a table at the far end of the cafe where it gave her a bit more space. Everything was in place to make her experience the best it could be.

And I’m happy to report, all went very successfully- she had a sniff about under the table and after 5 mins she settled herself down with the chew.

Go Roux 👊🏼

08/07/2023

Little Roux, now 12 weeks, went out on her first walk yesterday and this morning we did it again.

I explain to clients that I don’t do ‘proper walks’ with my dogs until they are ready, and understand how I want them to behave when in public places.

Instead I show and school them so they understand what I want from them.

We got out of the car and I tuned her in (captured eye contact) before setting off with some heelwork/ loose lead walking.

After doing this for a 5 mins I then took her off lead but continued to ask her to heel ( I don’t want her to think the moment I unclip the lead she runs off, she must wait for her release cue), after a few more minutes I then released her to go and sniff. I rewarded her for sticking close by (checking in) and recalling to voice & whistle.

We then spotted people out walking coming down the hill past us, so again, rewarded her for looking at them but choosing to stick with me.

I don’t like my dog charging up to people, I teach them to just wander past unless the person actively engages them.

After the locals passed by we took the opportunity to follow along at a distance so she had more exposure to seeing people and walking with me.

At the moment Roux is getting rewarded with her kibble. She had half in a bowl with the other dogs first thing and the other half she earned during this session learning much needed life skills!

Super proud of my little pup today ♥️

Nb. 1) Please excuse my poor camera skills, it’s quite an art to try and train and video all at once - I’ll get there 🤣

2) My hands were wet from the rain and treats and I couldn’t get the lead off whilst trying to video with the other hand - use two hands 😂

3) The videos wouldn’t upload separately so I had to try and make them into one video to post.

Since Roux joined our team I have been asked - ‘When will you start training her?’

And my answer is:

Pups are always learning. How you behave/ react to things they do will influence outcomes.

We start immediately but only with the very basics to begin with.
So what little bits have I done in the first two weeks….?!

* Toilet training - taking her out to the garden every hour to relieve herself
* Crate training - throwing some of her kibble into the crate, if she eats it and remains in the crate for a split second longer I throw in more so the crate is a great place to hang out.
* Handling - ensure she sees the hands as a positive and becoming comfortable with being handled.
* Learning not to come up the stairs - I choose not to allow the dogs upstairs in my house.
* Getting her accustomed to her collar & household noises (like the hoover)- I first hoovered when she was in the garden or another room so she hears it from a distance. Now she’s happy with it in the same room.
* Short car journeys - initially she was a little sick in the car returning home from the breeder so we have done a few short journeys to help her feel more comfortable.
* Socialisation - she can’t go out on the floor yet so I carry her around to allow her to absorb all the sights, sounds, smells etc.
* Self control when preparing her food- rewarding her ability to sit calmly whilst I’m preparing her meals.
* Rewarding heel position - no lead, no collar just using some of her food to capture when she’s by my side so she has a high rate of reinforcement for hanging out in that area.
* Reflex to her name - name = reward
* Recall - rewarding her for coming to me when she hears her name and the word, come.

This may seem like a lot things but most of it is the normal daily routine and the activities are only done for a couple of mins, perhaps 3 times per day.

If you have a puppy joining you this summer and want to get them off to the best start, why not book a puppy 1:1 before joining classes - drop us an email via the website.

Reactive Dogs. Many of you will know they are a passion of mine.

What can be confusing for some are terms which are used....and importantly what they actually mean and why we stress the importance of these when working with reactive dogs.

So this is a very non technical explanation of what some of these terms mean.....a very general and hopefully easy to understand explanation of terms.

This isn't just for fear reactive dogs......even over excited/hyper dogs can have high levels of stress....in fact some dogs that are just on the "go" all the time often have very high levels of stress hormones.

🔵Stress levels/Stress hormones
Reactive dogs have releases of stress hormones when they react ....the difficult thing with this is they can stay at a high level and can take hours or DAYS to reduce.....if your dog reacts many times a day.....those levels may be very high, and stay high. These levels need to come down to help reactivity. As mentioned even overly excited/hyper dogs can have high levels of stress hormones.

🔵Lowering stress hormones/stress levels/decompression.
Simply put.... ways to help your dog lower those stress levels. Lowering the pressure your dog is feeling.
Ways to help lower those levels include not adding to those stress levels (avoiding situations where dogs react again and again). If your dog reacts again and again....those levels may not drop and they can stay high. Every reaction can "top up" stress levels.
We also add in ways to help your dogs life by helping with confidence, enrichment and creating relaxation which can be a natural way to lower those stress hormones.
Sleep is very important for reactive dogs.
Helping a dog use their nose is extremely helpful for reactive dogs.

🔵Trigger stacking.
Small issues that can occur in a short period of time (or over a few days)....that add to stress in a dog. These can be seemingly small when looked at individually. These smaller "triggers" stack on top of each other and can cause reactions. They may react to something they have always been ok with if they have had multiple smaller scares/stressful situations, even if there are very small outward signs or reactions, they can "add up".......They may also have a much bigger reaction if they have had multiple smaller issues during the day. These can be as innocent as a very small startle when a door is closed too quickly, or a car toot as it goes past......these can have an accumulative effect on your dog so they will be MORE likely to react to something else, react more strongly and at a far greater distance than they may normally have an issue with.
Understanding trigger stacking is important with reactive dogs.

I hope that may clarify a few terms commonly used with reactive dogs.🙂

I will put a link to the trigger stacking post made a while ago in the comment section.
