Not a joke...

Have you ever wondered why you can have a 15 acre field and part of it is chewed down to nubs and the other part has grass a hand high, But your horse is constantly grazing in the chewed down part?

Grass 6 inches and taller has less sugars than grass under 6 inches.

For every inch drop below 6 inches, the fructan (sugar) content rises.

Grass under 6 inches is stressed like it's a Monday morning with a project deadline. It uses sugar to repair itself.

Stop mowing your fields short.

Stop grazing your chubbys on chewed down grass. (this is why grazing muzzles are so touted...they keep the horse from being able to get much short grass)

(We aren't saying let your fields be 3 feet tall, by the way. The optimal thing to do is keep them 6-8 inches tall and graze them in small areas there)

🐎 Really enjoyed writing a positive note for the FarmWeek. Equestrians are made of tough stuff we will get though these lockdowns, more educated, stronger and probably a little crazier. 😵💪👏

For the last 3 years I have been focused on building my dream, my business Loughowan Farm Livery. I am so proud of what we have created, and I hope that my loyal clients now friends would agree. The experience has been more rewarding and fulfilling than I could have ever imagined, though I would be lying if I said I hadn’t put my true passion on hold.

Developing horse and rider combinations is for me, my upmost love, my drive and ultimate job satisfaction. I’ve been a BHS coach for nearly 10 years now, teaching all levels and ages across a wide range of equestrian disciplines. Before setting up my base here in Hillsborough N.I, I have worked for some of the top dressage riders in Ireland and abroad. I am extremely lucky to have owned and ridden some unbelievable horses over the years, across all disciplines from advanced dressage horses to wobbly babies. I will be forever thankful for all they have and continue to teach me everyday.

The fundamental relationship between horse and rider is at the core of my teaching. For a horse to want to work with us and achieve for us, we must first understand their minds. It is my aim to develop and strengthen harmonious partnerships empowering my clients and their horses, enabling them to achieve their goals whatever they may be.
