What an absolute pleasure working with Lip. Lip had been given a second chance, when rehomed by the amazing clients. Lips confidence with other dogs and busy environments made it hard for her to enjoy walks and visit different places. With the hard work from the clients Lip has the tools to deal with busy environments and is now enjoying walks and seeing other dogs.

This is why dogs should be kept on a lead around livestock. Not only is this distressing for the livestock and the farmer, it is destroying the farmerโ€™s livelihood. Enjoy the countryside but be responsible.

Full incident can be seen on our latest lambing Vlog over on YouTube.

SEASONAL CANINE ILLNESS (SCI) WARNING - WHELDRAKE WOOD, Broad Hwy, York YO19 6BG (W287+MV Elvington, York).

Vets4Pets, Clifton Moor, York saw two cases of Seasonal Canine Illness on 16/09/2022 in dogs that live together and were walking in Wheldrake Wood 2 days ago. Vets4Pets advise NOT walking your dog in these woods for the next few weeks.

"What is Seasonal Canine Illness, and Should You Be Worried About It?
Seasonal Canine Illness (SCI), sometimes called Canine Seasonal Illness, is a (relatively) newly recognised disease in dogs โ€“ the first cases were detected in 2010. Cases peak in autumn โ€“ mainly September. The disease is still uncommon, but it can be serious โ€“ hence the need to be aware of it. SCI causes severe vomiting and diarrhoea in dogs. When the disease was first discovered 20% of dogs were dying from the symptoms but within two years this had reduced to 2%. Now the disease is rarely fatal, but dogs can be unwell for 7-10 days.

SCI was first detected on the Sandringham Estate in Norfolk. East Anglia, Lincolnshire and Nottinghamshire remain higher-risk areas, but cases have been seen more widely. If you are holidaying in the East with your dogs this autumn, the risk of SCI is slightly higher. Dogs that have walked in woodland and dogs that have harvest mites (see below) are believed to be at greater risk too.

What Causes SCI?
Sadly, the cause of SCI remains unknown. The Animal Health Trust, based in Newmarket, was conducting research into the disease. Most of what is known about SCI is from their research. Sadly, however, they were forced to close in 2020 and research is not ongoing.

A few potential causes, such as mushroom poisoning, chemicals, natural flora, or exposure to algae have been discounted. There is a strong link between symptoms and dogs that have recently walked in woodland. There is also a link to harvest mite infection in many cases.

What Are Harvest Mites?
Harvest mites (Neotrombicula autumnalis) are tiny mites, just visible to the human eye. You can see them on your dog if you look carefully โ€“ they look like orange dust. They climb onto dogs and attach to feed in thin-skinned areas such as the inside of the ears, or between the toes. They cause intense itching, irritation, and reddened skin. Harvest mites are most common in Autumn.

Many dogs diagnosed with SCI have had harvest mites โ€“ but not all dogs with harvest mites have SCI. Scientists wondered if the mites might carry a virus that affects dogs - causing SCI - (among other theories) but nothing has been proven."

Today allowed us to get exposure to different and new surroundings. We managed to see plenty of wildlife and meet some people. Euca loved it and it also gave Daisy the chance to build her confidence around people.

Ensure that as your pup grows and develops, you introduce new surroundings and noises. This enables your pup to build up resilience and reduce the chance of sensitivity and reactivity.

Are you looking to introduce the whistle for your recall?

If you can introduce the whistle when your pup is young, I find a great way to begin is to whistle feed your pup. This involves blowing the whistle every time you feed your pup, this allows the pup to associate hearing the whistle, coming to us and getting a big meal. Trust me if you do this the pup will love to come running to you every time they hear the whistle. If your pup is always around you when you are ready to feed try getting someone to hold the pup further away and when you blow the whistle release them and watch them sprint towards you.

Once you are happy that they are regularly coming towards you, move into different locations and increase the distance. At this stage we do not want to introduce distractions. Remember every time the pup returns to us make sure we reward them, this includes playing with them. Make every recall the best thing ever. At this stage we can really test if they are consistently returning before introducing distraction.

Things to remember:

๐Ÿถ The first time you blow the whistle consider gentle blows as to not scare the pup.
๐Ÿถ how many pips should I do? This does not matter but once you decide always stick with it.
๐Ÿถ Ensure that we make every recall so fun for our pup, if they enjoy it they will return when we introduce distractions.
๐Ÿถ What if they don't return when I blow the whistle? This will likely be because you have gone a step further than the pup can manage. Reduce the distance and also keep in mind when you are able to capture your dogs attention, if they have found a lovely scent in your garden you may struggle at the start. Wait until they are less distracted and try again.
๐Ÿถ Be patient! Our pup is young and learning

Are you looking to introduce grooming to your puppy, have you got a dog that is sensitive to grooming?

Ensure you have plenty of rewards, as we want to make this a positive interaction. As you can see from this clip, the pup has the freedom to move away if she feels uncomfortable. This is important as you will need to build up trust. Always start from infront of your pup, this reduces the fear or surprise of something new touching them.

๐Ÿ‘‰ Put your pup in a position the is most comfortable for grooming.
๐Ÿ‘‰ Drop a few treats in front of them
๐Ÿ‘‰ Show the brush and reward (if your puppy/dog is very sensitive then stay on this stage until they are comfortable)
๐Ÿ‘‰ Once the pup is comfortable, slowly introduce touching them with the brush (at this stage ensure it is really light touches)
๐Ÿ‘‰ Gradually build up the time you brush and the pressure applied, if at any point the pup begins to be uncomfortable stop, go back to a lighter short contact and build back up.

Things to remember:
๐Ÿถ Keep rewarding, this should always be fun for the pup.
๐Ÿถ short, sharp sessions (do not spend long practicing this at first, finish while the pup is still happy)
๐Ÿถ introduce fun distractions such as making your puppy wait to take a treat, this can move their focus away from the brush.

Remember to reward the good behaviour. Consistency, repetition and patience will bring great results.

Morning thought:
Does your puppy chew stuff you don't want them to?
Don't tell them off! Puppy's need to chew to develop. They don't understand "NO".
Instead replace it with something they can chew, make it fun and they will keep playing with that.

26/07/2022

Building a positive interaction between the puppy and the crate allows them to feel safe and secure. The crate can help them stay calm in new or stressful environments. Sometimes just giving your dog the option to go somewhere that they feel safe and comfortable can help them to relax.

Crates should not be used as a punishment, this will create a negative association for the dog and they will not be relaxed when put in.

Benefits to crate training.

๐Ÿ‘‰ Gives them a safe place to go when feeling stressed, nervous or tired.

๐Ÿ‘‰ A safe place for your puppy/dog when unsupervised.

๐Ÿ‘‰ Can help settle them in new environments.

๐Ÿ‘‰ Can be used for travel to ensure safe and enjoyable journeys.

๐Ÿ‘‰ Helps with toilet training. (Most dogs tend to avoid making mess where they sleep)

To teach down for the first time.

Step 1: Bring the pup into the sit position.
Step 2: Bring the reward under the pups chin close to the chest, lower reward until the pup is in the down position. (This will naturally make the pup lower into the down position, you may need to hold your hand near the floor until the pup gets into correct position).
Step 3: Mark and reward.
Step 4. Throw treat away to break the down position and repeat.

24/07/2022

When you get a new puppy and begin training, the easiest way for your puppy to understand sit is by luring.
Step 1. Have a reward in your hand.
Step 2. Allow the puppy to smell the reward, raise above the head which will naturally make the dog sit.
Step 3. Mark the behaviour and reward.

What is marking a behaviour? When we say 'mark the behaviour', this simply means communicating with your dog to tell them you are happy with what they have just done. I use the word 'Yes'! You can use any word or a clicker.
