And just like that Christmas is here!

Since opening the salon in July our feet have hardly touched the ground, we are enjoying a break and will reopen on Tuesday 2nd January.

Thankfully we have not only been busy with our regular clients, also lots of new ones. Our unique methods have been very popular with our clients and we have had many of the more difficult and challenging dogs through the door. Each dog has its own ways and preferences, once this is understood then we can progress. We have experimented with lots of techniques from pattern games, scent work, resilience building and the most popular is definitely the snuffle box, each dog finding their favourite.

Sadly we have also said goodbye to a few longstanding clients as well as 2 of my own this year. Thinking of the beautiful pets who have left us this year to journey on to rainbow bridge.

Next year there are lots of exciting things planned. We will continue to research scientific studies to keep up to date with new ways to improve your dogs grooming experience.

All that is left is to thank you all for the wonderful and thoughtful gifts, tips and well wishes. We are overwhelmed with your generosity and to wish you a very merry Christmas and a happy and healthy New Year from myself, Poppy and Ella x

What a wonderful way to end the year! This may not seem like much, but my best Buddy showed me how far he has come this year.

We have been teaching him to indicate on a marker which is great for a reactive dog to learn impulse control. He loves doing this and we use it during his sessions if he starts to feel frustrated.

I always record his sessions so I can watch it back and see his body language to make sure I'm not missing any little triggers. Today I put my tripod on a stool. Buddy looked at the hole in the middle of the stool and started indicating on it. Such a small thing to offer, but it shows he is thinking, he wants to play the game and he is improvising to get a reward. This is actually a huge step forward.

From a dog who was highly resource guarding of his body, would not be touched and would bite to defend himself to a dog who is relaxed, starting to enjoy touch and is thinking.

This couldn't have been achieved without the dedication of his wonderful owners, who understood it would be a long process and stuck with him. They did training at home and gave him the time and space he needed as well as celebrating every little change they saw in Buddy.

Thank you for your lovely presents and card. It really means the world to me.

Not just a groomer. Our job covers so much more than just bathing and cutting hair. We often notice things that would otherwise be missed. If we spot something that looks abnormal or a difference in your dog we will always tell you no matter how minor it seems.

I’ve been grooming Kipper for many years now, the last groom he had one claw that had grown thicker. I pointed it out to his owner as this could happen for several reasons. Maybe inflammation in the foot, a fungal infection or it could be more serious and an early sign of cancer. As a groomer I cannot diagnose medical conditions, so always advise a vet if I notice anything.

Luckily for Kipper his owner had it checked and the vet has removed the nail. They are satisfied it’s nothing sinister, but it has been sent to the lab for analysis.

Get well soon Kipper ❤️

My Best Buddy

I wasn’t expecting much from Buddy this week after the fireworks. I thought he might still be triggered. But no, he surprised me by being letting me scissor his front legs.

Front legs are our nemesis. I can hold for a second or two, but we are still filling this particular trust bank. However, he showed great restraint with the wait cue while I trimmed the long hair back. I use my ‘cue’ hand to control his movement and encourage him to shift his weight so I can safely scissor. I do not take my eyes off his leg, watching for subtle signs of movement. He does not take his eyes of my hand with the chicken!

This is a huge step forward for Buddy, he really enjoys his sessions and as long as we can keep this up he will never need another sedated vet shave.

Huge thanks to his owners for understanding his needs and keeping his short weekly visits. It’s working for Buddy ❤️

Buddy has come so far, but his front legs are still our nemesis. He responds to a wait cue while a trimmed a little. This is a huge step forward for him. I u...

You are being watched! You are being judged!

Ever wondered why your female dog prefers certain family members? It may be that she has been watching and judging everyone’s competency levels. Following a small study from Japan it seems female dogs are far more likely to judge us than male dogs.

What do you think?

⭕️ Be Prepared!

Have you prepped your dogs food ready for this evening and beyond? 🎆

You can use your dogs daily allowance, combine it with some yummy stuff or just make them some great treat parcels 🧀

Utilising food is a great way of keeping your dog calm 🧘‍♀️ if your dog has to keep their brain busy and lick away at their food it releases lots of endorphins 😍 the good guys 👍🏻

Even if your dog isn’t bothered by the bangs it’s well worth giving them something to do, to make sure they stay that way.
If you feed kibble don’t panic, you can add some water to soak, or mix with some scrummy pumpkin 🎃 or sweet potato 🍠

Baths are meant clean dogs, not to get them covered in clay!

This little girl had a specialised cleanse today. She had a clay mask applied using Rhassoul clay from the Atlas Mountains in Morocco. It was selected for her for its deep cleansing properties of her skin and hair without disrupting the delicate micro flora of the skin.

We don’t use generic commercially produced mud spas. We select the best clays and make our own clay masks.

More great firework advice to help your dogs through the next few weeks

🔴 Every year we find ourselves in the same predicament, here’s our reminder to help you and your 4 legged friend through the assault on their senses!

🔺Up the exercise!
Whatever your dogs usual exercise pattern, increase it, especially off lead! Allowing them extra time to run, sniff & be free will really help them recover and stay restored.
Be mindful of what time of day you are walking. Make sure your dog is wearing a tag, and that it’s up to date 📞

🔺Change it up!
Taking your dog to new places is great for all sorts of reasons. During firework season it will help them to use their natural curiosities to boost serotonin levels 🧘‍♀️

🔺Crack out the food!
Food searches, training for rewards, snuffle mats, tasty chews, puzzle toys ... the list is endless and it’s easy to use their food allowance in a more effective way. Those few extra treats will be worn off with the additional exercise.
Combining the bangs with good stuff and keeping your dogs busy is a perfect way to spend a noisy evening 🦴

🔺Be Kind! (Not weird)
It is ok to reassure your dog.
Let me repeat that;
IT IS OK TO REASSURE YOUR DOG!
For sure your dog will not benefit from you being weirdly over reassuring, but being calm & comforting is part of your role.
You can not reinforce fear as an emotion, if your dog needs you, be there! 💕

🔺Get Help!
If your dog is really struggling then please use some tried and tested remedies or resources, but equally please speak to your vet. There are some great products on the market now to support anxious dogs, dependant on their level of anxiety you may need more than what can be bought off the shelf 👨‍⚕️

🔺Home is where the heart is
Creating safe spaces. Keeping the radio on. Popping the tv up a notch or two. Providing comfy, warm places. Staying in for the evening.
This will all help your dog to rest, stay resilient and feel loved while the world sets light to thousands of £’s all around them 💖

Fireworks 💥

Fireworks time is a stressful time for many dogs. This impacts them for several days as their cortisol levels have risen. They will be trigger stacked and more reactive and jumpy until their levels return to normal, which can take up to 3 days after the traumatic event.

This can affect their grooming experience and they will be more sensitive to noise and touch.

Please read and share my previous posts regarding fireworks to help keep your dog as calm as possible during the next few weeks. Let’s try to help out our four legged friends as much as possible ❤️🐾

Fireworks 💥

Top tip 3

This photo is of my Daisy, sadly no longer with us but is my inspiration and the face of my logo.

Fireworks were a huge stress for her. Using top tip 1 and 2 in previous posts and this was the result. She slept like a baby throughout. You can see she is wearing her Pet Remedy infused bandana and Classic FM is playing.

A safe comfortable space for her to settle, some dogs may prefer their crate or bed or under the sofa. As long as it’s a space they feel safe and they have chosen.

Barneys story

Gorgeous Barney loved the enrichment zone in the salon. At home time he went in and plonked himself down on the snuffle mat 🥰 love this dog!

It makes me so proud and happy to see a dog like Barney so comfortable in the salon. He has had a long journey overcoming trauma. He came to me when he took a dislike to his legs being touched. We started with short sessions of cooperative training. He had to build up trust in me, as well as the salon.

It became apparent when I tried to put a grooming restraint on him how he felt as he ran and hid. Also he couldn’t cope with being on the grooming table. To keep his sessions short his owners would bath him at home so I could just cut his hair.

His owners have been amazing and have excelled with his training. Thanks to them for being so patient and letting Barney work through his issues with the time he needed. They also train with the wonderful Alicia at Alicia's Obedience Dog Training who recommended me to them.

Today Barney had his first full groom with a bath, dry and haircut all in one go. He was amazing, he stayed calm and relaxed throughout.

Pet Remedy is excellent for calming pets. Along with listening to the Classic Fm app, Daisy wore a bandana with a spritz of pet remedy on it. Also used the plug in a quiet room for her to settle.

Fireworks 💥

My top tip 1

Classic FM are doing their Pet Classics show again this year. I can highly recommend this if your pet suffers during fireworks. I used to play this for my old girl Daisy who would get very anxious at this time of year. She would relax and sleep throughout while listening to Classic FM.
