Donaldson's vets are proudly taking part in an Antibiotic Amnesty campaign, launched by the Responsible Use of Medicines Alliance (RUMA) and sponsored by Zoetis.

This initiative invites our clients to return unused or out-of-date (OOD) antibiotics to the surgery. ♻

💊💊💊Why participate in the Antibiotic Amnesty? 💊💊💊

Protecting the Power of Antibiotics: 💪💪💪

Antibiotics are crucial for treating bacterial infections and have saved countless lives. It is essential to use antibiotics wisely to ensure they remain effective when most needed.

Ensuring Safe Disposal of Unused Antibiotics: 💊💊💊

Studies reveal that leftover antibiotics are rarely returned to pharmacies or vets and are often discarded in household waste or flushed away.
Antibiotic residues found in rivers around the world may contribute to antibiotic resistance (AMR) and harm water quality, aquatic life, and wildlife.
An Antibiotic Amnesty raises awareness of AMR and promotes responsible disposal, helping to reduce environmental pollution.
The improper use of leftover or expired antibiotics can lead to adverse effects, increase the risk of AMR, and delay accurate diagnosis.

Let's unite to preserve the power of antibiotics! 💊💪💊
These vital medicines should be used with care—prescribed only when necessary, taken only for the duration required, and disposed of responsibly.

Together, we can ensure antibiotics continue to work for generations to come! 😁

⚠⚠ We have recently been alerted that YuMOVE and Pro-Kolin have had counterfeit products sold on Amazon and eBay ⚠⚠

Counterfeit products often fail to meet quality standards and can contain harmful ingredients, posing risks to pet health.

The lack of regulation makes these items potentially dangerous, which may result in an emergency treatment

We encourage pet owners to purchase from veterinary practices to ensure their pets' safety and well-being

We have uploaded some FAQ's from their websites that should help to answer any further questions you may have:

One of our vets encountered a concerning situation when her dog came across a discarded cigarette butt that had been thrown into their garden.

Seeing the cigarette butt in her dog's mouth she quickly removed it.

However, within just 15 minutes, the situation took a turn for the worse as the dog began to exhibit troubling signs of ni****ne poisoning.

She started vomiting violently and showed abnormal tremors. As her condition deteriorated, she became increasingly uncoordinated, exhibiting ataxia, which made it difficult for her to stand or walk properly.

Recognising the urgency of her symptoms, the vet swiftly transported her to Somerset Road Hospital for emergency treatment. There, she received the vital medical care needed to counteract the effects of the toxin.

Thanks to the vet's quick actions, her dog has successfully overcome the crisis and has made a complete recovery.

Ni****ne toxicity can be lethal.

Please keep all cigarettes/tobacco products and all other ni****ne products including vapes, patches and gum, out of the reach of your pets.

If your pet has eaten any ni****ne products contact your vet immediately!

⚠ Retractable Leads ⚠

Ensuring the safety of your pets and others is incredibly important when using a retractable lead.

While retractable leads are appealing for their flexibility, it's vital to be aware of the potential risks and consequences that come with using them

🐾They can contribute towards bad walking behaviour and pulling.
We have seen many animals suffer from painful neck and back injuries with long-lasting effects.
Retractable leads can cause a snapback effect, that may result in injuries to the trachea and neck vertebrae.
An injured trachea can also lead to a persistent cough and affect your pet's breathing

🐾It's crucial to keep in mind, that even if your pet is not aggressive, how their behaviour might be seen by other animals.
Retractable leads can pose unexpected risks, as they allow pets to stray into the personal space of other dogs heightening the chances of conflicts.
The time it takes to pull back from an aggressive dog varies significantly between a retractable lead and a standard lead.
This disparity could be the difference between preventing an injury and a potential incident.

🐾When you're out walking your dog near the roadside, it's essential to select the appropriate lead.
We highly recommend using a regular walking lead, as it offers better control and safety for your pet.
During your walks, your dog will experience a variety of stimulating, captivating, and occasionally frightening situations.
Dogs on retractable leads have the freedom to run in any direction or chase something that grabs their attention, limiting your control.
A regular walking lead can prevent the danger of road accidents and injury.

🐾Excessive lengths of lead can pose a risk, not only to you and your dog but also to passersby, as they can become tangled or present a tripping hazard.

🐾However, we acknowledge that retractable leads can be useful when used carefully in a safe and open area, as they can aid in providing dogs with more freedom.

🐾If you choose to use them, please carefully evaluate your surroundings to ensure the safety of your pets and those around you. 💕

10 Tips for dog owners to help manage firework anxiety 🎆🐶💥

1. Walk dogs earlier in the evening so they are tied and comfortable for when the fireworks begin.

2. Close your blinds and curtains to minimize the noise and flashes

3. Stay home to keep your dog company, having their loved ones around will help them feel more secure

4. Provide a bit of flexibility, allow your dog to find an area in your home that feels safe.

5. Provide cuddles and reassurance when your dog approaches or exhibits signs of seeking comfort. It is important to avoid overwhelming the dog with affection, as excessive displays can contribute to feelings of restriction during times of anxiety.

6. Do not shout at your dog if they’re feeling anxious, as this will make things feel even tougher for them. Staying calm can really help. Dogs are great at picking up on our feelings, so by keeping a relaxed vibe, you can reassure your dog that everything is alright. If your dog allows, provide distraction by playing games and offering treats

7. The bangs from the fireworks can be minimized by turning on the TV or playing music with a repetitive beat

8. Create a cosy little den for your furry friend! You can use their crate or set up a comfy spot with a table and chairs, draped with a soft blanket in a quiet corner of the house. Add some snuggly blankets, fluffy cushions, and their favourite toys and chews to keep them entertained. Remember, it's important to let them enjoy their space without interruptions. Be sure to explain to the kids that this is a special, safe area just for the dog!

9. Plug in an Adaptil Calm Home Diffuser, and put your dog in a Thundershirt for added comfort.

10. Have a chat with your vet about some medications that might help reduce anxiety or reach out to our behavioural team for training classes. They can guide you on ways to desensitise and help your dog feel more at ease with loud noises in the future.

This November, the veterinary profession is uniting for an Antibiotic Amnesty. 💊💊💊

Antibiotic Amnesty will run throughout November (starting Friday 1st), and it is brought about by RUMA (Responsible use of Medicines Alliance) and sponsored by Zoetis.

Donaldson's Vets are joining the campaign to inspire our clients to return any unused or expired antibiotics.

(We can also dispose of other pet medicines)

Returning unused or out-of-date antibiotics allows us to dispose of the drugs safely and responsibly, protecting our environment and fighting against antimicrobial resistance.

* Please note we only accept veterinary medicines.

Meet Taz, this lovely boy belongs to one of our Student Veterinary Nurses. He has been the most well behaved model today, helping his mum practice a variety of different bandaging techniques, a very important skill to have as a veterinary nurse.
🤕 As you can see, he was very good at playing the role of poorly pup, but he’s a happy boy really and we paid him with lots of love, attention and treats! 🦮🐶🐾💕
