Walrus update:

As many of you will know, a walrus has been around the Isles of Scilly since mid-June.

Whilst he is bringing a lot of interest and enjoyment, his presence in St Mary’s harbour poses huge risks to himself, livelihoods and potentially human safety. He is also causing a lot of damage.

With his best interests at heart, we have been working with local boat operators, businesses and statutory agencies, to work out the best possible plan to keep the walrus, our community and visitors safe. A full statement is linked below, and please take note of the following:

👍 boat owners are strongly advised to stop the walrus from hauling out on boats by blocking access with temporary barriers and obstructions.

👍 He will be discouraged from continuing in the harbour over the next few weeks, so you might see approved humane deterrent methods being employed.

👍There is advice in the statement on our website on watching the walrus responsibly, opportunities for monitoring him, deterrents and contact details to find out more, along with our partners.

The welfare of the walrus and the safety of people are paramount. It is hoped we can encourage him to choose a more secluded wild site, and that he will soon be rested enough to continue back north to his native Arctic.

Thank you!

The Isles of Scilly Wildlife Trust and British Divers Marine Life Rescue are aware that there is a walrus that has been sighted at the islands this afternoon - the first time one of these Arctic mammals has been recorded here!

This rare visitor is the same young male that spent a number of weeks in South Wales earlier this year, before passing through Cornwall and down to the Bay of Biscay. His last known sighting was at Bilbao, Spain, two weeks ago.

The animal's movements are being monitored by a number of conservation and welfare organisations to keep an eye on his health, although he seems to coping well out of his regular habitat and has been seen feeding often. It is hoped that he is now finally returning north and will get back to his native home in the Arctic again soon.

In the meantime, IOSWT and BDMLR are asking people to give the walrus plenty of space, not to approach or follow him and to respect him while he visits the island by not disturbing him. Given that he has been travelling large distances he could already be exhausted and will need plenty of rest before he moves on again. A seal-watching code of conduct was released recently by the Seal Alliance (www.sealalliance.org) and endorsed by Defra, which would be applicable to the walrus as well and members of the public, boat operators and others are all asked to please follow this and help make our special visitor have a pleasant and positive experience of Scilly.

If anyone is concerned for the welfare of the walrus then please ring British Divers Marine Life Rescue on 01825 765546.

Had a call out to this little guy today down on old town beach. This poor chap was very underweight and was small. He was weighed in at 13.5kg which is under his birth weight. He also had a few odd lesions on his left tail flipper which will need to be looked at in more detail. He is now at the vets and being looked after and fed. He will be going to the mainland tomorrow to get the right treatment he needs and once he is healthy he will be realised.
