Eli Lovell, one of our vets, is going to volunteer at The Gambia Horse and Donkey Trust for two weeks in December. They are in desperate need of pony headcollars and 4.5” bits if anyone has any they would like to donate for Eli to take out with her.

If you have any items please either give to one of our vets at a visit, or drop in to the office before 2nd December.

It has the added benefit of a beautiful wild flower meadow in the centre, and then the central grass keeps Peaches going through most of the winter too 👍

If you caught this morning's Equine Health Week 2024 podcast episode on taking a holistic approach to horse care, you'll have heard Ben Benson Farrier sharing some fascinating facts about horses' hooves and how to care for them.

Here are just a few of his top tips for winter hoofcare...

💧 Pick out hooves every day to remove mud and stones – wet mud carries moisture into the hoof wall, then wicks it out again as it dries.

💧 Apply a topical hoof dressing before turnout – this will help to protect the hooves from moist conditions.

💧 Keep moisture levels as consistent as possible – wet hooves can be as much as a quarter of an inch wider than dry hooves.

💧 Book farrier visits every four to six weeks to maintain a consistent hoof balance, or every four to five weeks if you’re competing regularly.

Happy New Year, Happy New Rules!

From 1st January 2024 vaccination restart rules for Equine Flu have changed in accordance with advice from the BEF.

Vaccination intervals now have reduced date ranges between the 1st and 2nd vaccinations, and between 2nd and 3rd vaccinations. Don’t get caught out!

Any horse restarting Flu vaccinations after 1st January 2024 will be affected by the changes, but vaccinations that are up-to-date prior to this will not be affected, and boosters should continue at either 6m or yearly (within 365 days) according to your particular governing body.

New vaccination course intervals:

1st - 2nd = 21-60 days

2nd - 3rd = 120-180 days

We will do our best to inform you when we vaccinate, with reminder stickers and sms messages, but ultimately it is your own responsibility to ensure that your vaccinations are up to date and comply with requirements.
