Slowly working away, trying to challenge the conventional approaches we've long accepted and aiming to foster a more productive and sustainable way of going for Super Sid. He has a tendency to run onto the forehand and sit too deep. While his conformation presents challenges, it has become apparent and important to us not to let that define his potential or serve as his standard—it’s not just 'how he goes.'
As we head into 2025, we are ready to embrace transformation, reject complacency, and establish new benchmarks for ourselves. Now, I just need to find better ways to manage my time so I can hold myself to this.👆🫣
Any advice on balancing horses, work, raising a toddler, and maintaining a semblance of a 'normal' home life would be greatly appreciated?!🙈😂

Atypical Myopathy
Horses can be more susceptible to Atypical Myopathy in the autumn, when the paddocks are bare and the autumnal winds blow.
Atypical myopathy is a potentially fatal disease of horses in the UK and Northern Europe which affects grazing horses. It is linked to the toxins that are present in sycamore seeds and has a seasonal prevalence, with most cases occurring in autumn/early winter and sometimes the following spring. This condition can cause severe muscle damage and can be fatal. Recognising the early signs is crucial: weakness, muscle tremors, dark urine, and difficulty standing or walking
If you are at all concerned about your horse potentially eating sycamore seedlings you must contact your vet immediately.

‘The clip hasn’t lasted long at all!’

The change in daylight hours is what triggers the winter coat change and growth -
In the UK, horse’s coats tend to start changing from (roughly) early September and can continue to grow in reasonably quickly through to the winter solstice, at which point the coat growth will slow down.

You’ll find that clips between September-December don’t ’last as long’ as clips done in the New Year. This is because the winter coat is continually growing until the solstice.
Natives/cobs/heavies tend to be on the hairier side, so some may need clipped every 4 weeks (give or take) if you want to keep them neat.
Whereas warmblood/TB/finer types may only need clipped 2/3 times over the whole winter, as they tend to grow a finer coat.

This is a rough guide, not a set in stone rule!
Every horse is different, and there are a lot of factors to consider -
• Age
• Breed
• Coat type (thick/fine/dense/long…)
• Health (Cushing’s Disease, EMS etc)
• Weight
• Workload
• Routine (in/out)
• Or, just like people - they can be hairy/not so hairy, no matter what the breed of horse is!

How often do you clip your horse? Tell me their breed etc and why you chose to do it as often as you do!
