Leads and bandanas can let other walkers know whether your dog needs some space. Dougie is recently blind and so I’d like it to be obvious to people that he may be easily startled or not easily move out of their way.

💛Other dogs wear Yellow to indicate they need space from people or other dogs 💛

Keep an eye on dogs wearing special bandanas or leads when you’re out walking your pet and be sure to recall your dog if your unsure whether other dogs are comfortable being approached, even if your dog is super social ☺️

We have played with the predatory sequence in our dogs to make certain parts more or less prominent, so they could perform certain jobs for us.
When we look at breed traits and which part of this sequence our dogs like to perform best, we can then look at ways to better fulfil them.

Full video of this just released in the comic membership. Find the link and special offer in my stories and bio.

Incredibly sad to hear of the passing of Karen Pryor today. I am proud to have graduated from the Karen Pryor Academy on the dog trainer professional course.

She has influenced modern dog and marine mammal training enormously. A true pioneer in clicker training and marine mammal training.

When I got my first sea lion trainer job when I was 20 my curator and amazing animal trainer Nikki handed me a tatty copy of don’t shoot the dog.
And there we are, I was obsessed with the art and science of kind and ethical animal training.
I went onto read ‘lads before the wind’ all about her dolphin training days, reaching the animal mind was a favourite too.

When I took a supervisor role to teach zookeepers to train their animals for cooperative care I printed and laminated Karen Pryors 10 rules of shaping for each departments kitchen 😅

So as a marine mammal trainer I looked at the KPA DTP course for becoming a certified dog trainer. What a course! 9 months (in th uk) dog training practical skills and assessments, tag teach coaching and business modules! It was a tough course but with hundreds of courses and each one promising to set you up for a future in pet dog training I have zero regrets choosing this one.

Rest well Karen, my condolences to your friends and family, what a remarkable woman ☺️

We often hear the phrases ‘small dog syndrome’ or ‘he thinks he’s bigger than he is’.
The truth is smaller dogs can get louder because they need to shout to be heard. Because they get it rough.

They get manhandled, laughed at and lifted from their feet without warning. The smallest often have the littlest control over their lives. These dogs are very aware of their size and that’s why they need to make sure they are heard.

Sadly our Dougie dog is being retired, he has been an excellent stooge dog helping many dogs and puppies with learning calm and prosocial behaviours around dogs! Thank you for being a super stooge Dougie! 🐾

We are all a bit shocked that Dougie has very rapidly lost his eye sight over the Christmas period. He has had lots of tests at his vets here and has now been referred to a specialist eye vet to uncover the cause. He is completely and permanently blind now and it breaks my heart to see him not himself. A big shock for him 💔

He is navigating the home remarkably well already and we’ve placed some textured mats under his water bowel and by the patio door. All of Dougies hand signal cues can be changed to tactile or verbal cues. I hopeful he will adapt to this new life and I’ll be doing everything possible to ensure he has enriching and quality senior years ahead.

Luckily Dougie has always loved sofa duvet days and he’s many more of those from his human family and Jess dog. 🐾

Happy retirement Douglas, we’ve got you! 🥹 x

Our little Jess dog is not coming with us on Christmas Day. 😱🎅

I am taking her to the local park run in the morning and I’ve stocked up on some natural chews for when me and the kids head over to my mums up the road.
It’ll be super busy and noisy with excited kids and Jess isn’t a fan of small busy spaces. Plus my mums cat 🐈‍⬛ wouldn’t appreciate the attention 🤣

This is your reminder that you don’t have to include your dog on all the Christmas festivities ☺️

Boxing Day beach walk yes ✅
House full of noisy guests no ❌
Park run in the open yes ✅
Too much attention from small people no ❌
Quiet time with yummy chews ✅

Every dog is different of course!

If your dog doesn’t like to be left alone you could take their own bed, some chews and lick mats, a crate if they are crate trained and do let family members or friends know if your dog enjoys petting and attention or not. Regular sniffy walks to break it all up and de-compress from all the sensory stimuli of a human celebration too can help 🙂

Dogs can be a little extra spicy in windy weather!

Why???

They’re so reliant on scent to understand the world around them, the wind can whip up all those scents and throw them about 🌪️ 👃
This can be disorienting for our dogs 🐕🤪
They might be irritated by flappy ears and tails being blown about and some dogs may get chilly making any behavioural nervousness or frustration related behaviours worse. 🥶 so move careful out there guys!

maybe swap a walk for some indoor activities like trying a new enrichment, some indoor scentwork or any fun training you and your dog can enjoy 😊

Take care out there 💨🍃

Growing up our spaniels and sprollies were regularly walked up the Tarka Trail in Ilfracombe, so when I started my business in 2020 it had to be Tarka Dog Training. 🐾

I’ve been very busy working and writing my assignment for my BSc in canine behaviour management this week, not only does a good chew keep their teeth and gums healthy but it keeps them busy while I get stuck into my learning 👩🏻‍🎓🦴

Here’s a picture of me climbing on the Pembrokeshire coast.

When climbing we not only have to lean back into our harness to weight the anchor or rope, but we also have to be ready to fall and that involves a sudden yank/stop/tug on the rope.

Notice how my climbing harness …

a) Is positioned around my body and not around my neck. You also get climbing harnesses that include straps on the upper body too.

b) Is not lined with metal prongs that dig into my body.

When my climbing harness catches me from falling, it doesn’t make me think of my mother catching me with her hands when I fell as a toddler.

The reason climbing harnesses don’t go around necks is because the neck is not as able to withstand force as the larger section of the body.

My harness also doesn’t make me more likely to fall! My learned and practised climbing skill is what helps me not fall. Although, the wide straps of my harness does make falling more comfortable.

The reason it’s not lined with metal prongs is because that would be really uncomfortable, probably very painful in fact. I’d probably get really stressed desperately trying to avoid any pressure of the harness on my body and I wouldn’t fully enjoy climbing.

The reason it doesn’t make me think of my mother catching me is because it’s a) a piece of equipment and not a person and b) being used in a totally different context - most notably in my adulthood!

Online you can read all sorts of reasons for using aversive tools, including prong collars, such as “it’s perceived like the mother correcting them as a puppy” or that alternatively, a harness causes dogs to pull on the lead.

There’s often plenty of reassurance online that they don’t hurt. They’re just a mild annoyance, an ickle wickle irritant.

My body can grow a bit tired of leaning back into my nicely padded harness after an hour or so. Taking a fall in a harness can still be a shock to the body. But I need to wear one to stay safe.

But I’m sure as hell that it would be less enjoyable and at times unbearable if it were lined with prongs or around my neck.

This above experience and rationale is why I don’t like teaching dogs to walk on a loose lead while they wear a collar, let alone using corrections or uncomfortable equipment, such as prong collars, to correct undesired behaviour.

NB! If a dog can walk impeccably without pulling on a comfortable, flat collar then that’s not personally an issue for me!

There may also be genuine reasons dogs cannot be walked on harnesses, such as the dog experiencing a structural issue or emotional aversion to the harness, or the client not being able to physically hold their dog whilst the dog is wearing a harness.

It is easier to prevent pain than to “chase” it once it takes hold in the body (Downing et al., 2023).

Animals live “in the moment”, potentially making pain worse for them than for humans. They cannot deal intellectually with pain, think of better moments in the past, or anticipate that their pain will end in the future.

I’m NOT one of those animal professionals that moans about people. I am people. I have two human kids i work and I’m studying.

I know life is crazy busy and I know that getting some dog training into your schedule is hard when life is overwhelming already.

I find it easy to empathise with my human clients because I’ve lived with a dog with behavioural issues whilst also being a working mum.

No pet professional should make you feel bad. We are all doing our best with what we know and what resources and support we have.

I won’t be the dog trainer with the showy contact heeling videos and perfect dogs. Because I’m juggling a lot! And I prioritise different things in my training.
My dogs get walked every day and I endeavour to squeeze in one training session per dog that lasts about 2-3 minutes. Sometimes we do a couple but other days it’s a miracle if the kitchen gets cleaned the same night 🤪

As a zookeeper I loved speaking to people about the animals I loved to teach people, my team and the visitors, as a dog training instructor and behaviour professional I work WITH people we are a team. I enjoy meeting people and problem solving. Of course I love meeting your amazing dogs too ☺️

Whether it’s dog or human directed ‘aggressive’ behaviours and precursors can be scary and very upsetting for us.
I aim to address the root cause instead of suppressing these behaviours, which may look like growling, barking, lungeing, snapping and biting.
This may mean working with your vet to get the best outcome for you and your pet.
