Middle somewhere new!
We’ve been learning this behaviour at home to start with against a wall and with targets at home we’re fading the targets out and using a single verbal cue, but this was a new location so it’s ok to bring back the prompts to help them out! Middle is a fab portable stationing behaviour, it can be used as recall or keeping your dog really close when needed, perhaps this would be a good way to retrain a dog who avoids having their lead clipped back on! 🙂
Bailey loves his new treat toy! Good food dispensing toys are great fun!!! But have other benefits 🐾 mental stimulation for non working working breeds 🐾 keeps them out of mischief when you gotta do your boring human chores 🐾 problem solving is confidence building 🐾 keeps them busy and four on the floor when guests arrive 😀 many uses….. when do you use yours??
Recall training tips!
Are you punishing your recall? 😬 there are many ways to recall your dog and reward them to ensure it happens again in the future! By using chasing or tugging games this may be a better reward for recall from dogs or seagulls or squirrels that they want to chase! Come here and chase this instead!!! 😃 can be much more effective than come here and let me put this tiny treat in your mouth 😅. Every dog is different! They all have different distraction nemesis’s for recall! Get in touch to see how we can tweak and tidy up your training for an enviably rapid recall 🐾 💨
Tug-E-Nuff toys are great, I bought this treat pocket tug to encourage more toy play with my foodie GSD but now I’m using it to help my toy driven non-foodie collie cross to take food in new places 😃 #tugtoys #fetch #colliesofinstagram #northdevondogbehaviour #northdevondogtrainer #dogtrainingtips
Testing out our canicross kit today 🙂🏃🏻♀️🐾
Anyone else run with their dog?
Different day different chew…
I’ve been very busy working and writing my assignment for my BSc in canine behaviour management this week, not only does a good chew keep their teeth and gums healthy but it keeps them busy while I get stuck into my learning 👩🏻🎓🦴 #whippet #colliecross #behaviourmanagement #lifelonglearning #behaviourist
Finding the heel position and building value with being at your side is an important part of teaching your dog to walk at your side. #puppytraining #labradorpuppy #northdevondogtrainer #puppytrainingtips
Stop door dashing!
Teaching Jinx 9 month old Doberman door manners. I used her sit behaviour and added in all these pieces: hand moving toward door handle, moving door handle, opening door slightly, wide door opening and moving through on a release cue. We also practiced moving through the front doors together. Not her dragging me out 🙂 lots of treats made her patience very worth while, with practice the release cue will become the reward for staying still while the door opens ☺️ #teenagedog #adolescentdog #doberman #dobermantraining #northdevondogtrainer #bigdog
Our absolute favourite treats atm! So easy to prep! Super healthy and high value 🤩🥩 and very cost effective 💷 food rewards are a great way to pay for and shape behaviour in your pet! I like to ensure they also have high nutritional value too 😀
What do I mean by cooperative care and why invest in it?
Bob was a big baby when it came to grooming and vet checks. He’d pee himself run away or freeze. 😔
He had to undergo urgent treatment in rescue and it was all a bit scary and probably painful. I didn’t want to damage our relationship by restraining him for nails teeth and ear cleaning nor did I want to put any professionals in a dangerous position with a large dog snapping at them out of fear. (The only time he showed me his teeth was on an occasion I tried to get him in the shower!)
So I used my husbandry training experience from working with large carnivores in the zoo to teach him to be able to say no, and to feel confident and calm and cooperate in his own care! Guess what? Bob enjoys the training game much like my lions and sea lions did back in my zoo days.

Why I use a harness
In this video I am walking Bodhi a mixed breed large dog on a Y shaped two clip harness. I explain why this set up was recommended for B. Bodhi has seen the vet about his gait btw! His lead pulling has improved vastly over the last few months and barking and lungeing at traffic occurs much less frequently and with massively lowered intensity and with a faster recovery period now!
Here’s why I think the harness has helped us both walk better and safer.
1. Two points of contact on roadside walking just in case a big lorry or a cat triggers a lungeing episode, I can put on the breaks and keep us both safe!
2. Comfort! Free shoulders and no tightening round his neck = one less thing to feel grumpy or irritated by so he’s better able to deal with environmental stressors or excitement like cats or vehicles.
3. I have the option to lengthen his lead to offer more freedom to move and access sniffs when we are away from traffic and cats. More freedom feels = less frustration feels.
