Nail Trimming Tips
This is often the most sensitive part of a dog"s groom. However, it doesn't have to be.
Teaching your dog from an early age is vital to a happier life. Good health and welfare routines, including toilet training, grooming at home, socialisation, all contribute to a positive balanced behaviour.
A great K9 family member blends in, not dominates, separates, or spoils your home, your mental welfare or your family dynamics. Love me love my dog, is no excuse for an ill mannered or untrained pooch. On that note we hope to offer some helpful tips on various subjects over the next few weeks.
When and how to desensitise your dog for a nail trim.
Introducing brushing and nail trims should start the day your puppy comes home. Puppies should not become alarmed if introduced early as part of their welfare groom.
1 Positive association with anything is important, and encouraged from an early age. Seek a reputable and experienced professional for each element of your dog's training.
Nail trimmers -
Lay these as comfortable to your dog, whilst offering a treat, gradually moving closer to a comfortable acceptance, even better a touch. Touch the paws. nails regularly by hand and with the trimmers. prior to their experience of a groom or vet visit. Repeat
2 Positive methods when introducing an action or routine is important. Slowly introducing trimmers, whilst your dog is relaxed. Moving away. if not comfortable, and trying again later.
3 Desensitisation is important. Eventually, they should accept the trimmers and not be afraid, if they already have a negative association, this will take longer, and an experienced professional, who is also confident and has a good rapport with dogs, will be required.
4 Regular repetitive training is key to success.
Repeating often enough creates a habit.
The worst scenary is only having your dogs nails trimmed when excessively too long.
Prevention is better than cure.
Regular brushing is great for the welfare of any dog. Note. A wool/mix coat requires daily reverse brushing, as matts easier, and also a perfect opportunity to check their nails.
*Rescued dogs may take longer.
The quick grows longer with a longer nail. therefore excessively long nails will only become short with several weekly trims, then the quick recedes with each trim, resulting in shorter nails. Excessively long nails impacts your dogs gait, stature, shoulders and spine. Affecting their general health and welfare, and ability to walk comfortably.
