Effective recall can be trained at any age, however the way to start is always in the house, with short distances to maximise your chance of success. Then increase the distance and amount of distractions.
Once you’ve perfected it indoors, start the process again but outdoors and you’ll soon be able to walk your dog off lead confidently, knowing they’ll come back when called.

Don’t overlook small unwanted behaviours, if you say ‘sit’ make sure you get a sit, even if it takes a while. These micro behaviours can lead into macro ones and snowball into bigger issues. #kegworthk9

When searching a large open area for a missing person, it may be that the person has sought shelter or safety at a point of interest, ie. A large tree or a small outbuilding. If your dog can recognise and be directed towards these points of interest, this can make time critcal searches quicker, and safer for the handler. Meeting other dogs is actually only a small part of socialisation, environmental exposure should be making up the larger portion of socialising your dog.
