A big well done to Dog mamma Carol Sephton & “Mr Rocco”🐾
(Mr over stimulated & anxious at times, due to bad experiences with a couple of little dogs where he lives)

Today we went into the Lions Den, which for them is Sanders Park!

So many dogs, on leas and off. People, small children, noises, sounds. Stress & pressure for him.

But we don’t practice avoidance, or management. We practice behaviour change for both human and dog.

Measured exposure, time given to absorb, tasks to be conducted and executed.

We had a great time, a bit of a longer session. But it was needed to help both mom and dog to settle and understand the Tasks.

A nice run around and a couple of zoomie’s at the end on a long line.

Rocco left happy and worked really well. And Carol, you were fantastic. Really working on your confidence and handling skills. Starting to understand that Rocco works off your energy and the more confident, certain and adaptable you are, the more Rocco responds and ultimately settles.

Well done❤️🐾

The Book of Bathminster, chapter 1. Verse 3-4

“The Bed”
If by the decree of resting activities, you my bullies are asked to go to your resting places. Then go my children and go with gusto😆❤️🐾

21/04/2023

If you teach them anything apart from the basics like sit, leave, wait, down etc.

Teach them something really beneficial.

“How to switch of and chill”.

Believe it or not dogs don’t naturally know how to just switch of and relax. Just like teach them to “sit”. It’s a skill to be taught and learnt.

Have an easy life with your bullie. Be your bullies advocate❤️🐾

It’s not just about Bull Terriers, although I have a special love for them.

The fact that they challenge me and teach me more about me than them is one of the reasons I like working with them.

But I’ll help any dog. The more difficult, the better😆

“Wynn” The Huntway/Collie Cross. (New Zealand Herding Breed)

Wynns, floats between over stimulation, anxiousness and reactivity to people, dogs, whether inside or outside her home. (Excessive barking whilst walking, sitting……anything) and pulling whilst walking.

We’ve focussed on reestablishing connection between her and her human family. Applying the corrections where they need to be applied and reward where it be needed. But absolutely no more softy softy talking to her like a baby like she had been used to.

Without a confident handler that can provide a dog with a sprinkle of purpose, a feeling of safety and confidence. A dog will assume a position of making its own decisions. And inherently, those are poor decisions.

We’ve been implementing engagement exercises, drills, impulse control. And making Wynns dog mama a more
Confident, secure handler. No matter what the situation.

We started in the home, set homework’s and then have moved out to places where we know Wynn is going to be triggered.
Because only through exposure to the issue. Can the issue be started to be resolved and worked through.

Lots of owners today who have no control over there dogs all around Wynn. But she and her mom did amazing.

Bull Terrier or not. We must be our dogs advocate.

Not treat them like a baby, reassure them like you would a human child. Respect your dog for what it is and learn to give them what they actually need. Not what you “think” they need based on our human emotional responses.

Well done Wynn & Julie🐾

03/04/2023

Today we had a visit from one of our “extended family” Plamena Petrova with “Brook”.

Anyone that owns a Bullies knows, or can appreciate that. They aren’t an inherently easy dog. Especially as a first time owner. Who’s not necessarily a person who knows how to connect with the dog in the way the dog needs them to.

Just through nothing more than a lack of understanding on what’s needed for this breed. Brooks famiky we’re starting to see negative behaviours. Anxiety, frustration, reactivity and non compliance when walking.

10 months later and after having a couple of trainers with no clue. They decided to bring Brook back to us for help and guidance.

In 2 hours we had much more progress than in 10 months. And more importantly we had a more relaxed dog and a more confident, knowledgable Bull Terrier owner.

And then to top it if we had a dog that’s happier and more relaxed.
Walking side by side with another male. Controlled by his now confident mommy.
Which she never thought possible.😊

Both listening, complying, and Brook learning how to be relaxed, how to recognise that actually he can be relaxed, as mommy has the skill to show him the way. To provide him with structure, security and safety.

Training a dog is messy, frustrating and hard for all involved.
But as youll see, as the seconds and minutes pass. The dog and the handler become more relaxed and confident and start to work effectively together.

Other training elements we done and we look forward to seeing progress and more progress.

Rebuilding and changing behaviours.
Well done.👌🏾🐾

Recall. (Using our dogs as distractions) and they are living up to a typical attention seeking bullie behaviour😆

“ If you call them, they should listen”🐾
(how one gets to that level is the question). Consistency and the correct guidance👌🏾

Excellent work, working under distraction using our stooges😆❤️🐾

“Popeye”.

3rd in from the left, has had a hard transition here, in terms of new rules, boundary setting & re-learning how to deal with his impulses.

It’s key to start as you mean to go on when referring to the the beginning journey with you and your bullie.
To set boundaries, give love, and teach calm.

It is not the job of our incumbent dogs to teach a new arrival. It’s ours, it’s yours🫵🏾

Now “lead free” in the home and keeping your head together! Popeye lad, after a lot of resistance. You’re no doing well lad.👌🏾

Next weeks goal. All 6 of the Bullies in the picture.😊❤️🐾

Helping a friend with their dog today. 😊

An overstimulated Lab.

Great effort, applied pressure to Human & Dog today.
Working with dogs and people is so much easier and more rewarding when people actually listen and implement.

All of us had a great time.

Meet “Skye” a rescue dog from Cyprus.☀️

She has no history other than she lived in the street for the first couple of years of her life.

She is Pit/Staffie/Frenchie mix 😮🐾

Her traits are, Anxiety based reactivity. Which projects itself in outward aggression. Dog to dog aggression & the ability to bite a human if pressured to much by a stranger.

My role has been to educate & upskill her dog mama, thus getting her to think more dog and less like “Mary Poppins”😆. And through her her development and understanding. Being able to in-turn give “Skye” what she needs. That being:

Confidence, security, assurance and impulse control. At the same time building a better relationship between Mama & “Skye”.

Today was a day of pressure for both Mom & “Skye”, as I introduced one of our BT’s.
A boy who is for the most part steady, and can be neutral to reactivity from another dog under the right guidance.

I let Mama handle him, (our boy) in this small element the numerous exercises we did.
And after a few drills and pressure testing. This is what we achieved.

This is the closest Skye has ever got to a dog, let alone another Bull breed in a stationery position. Without wanting to tear the other dogs head off!
She coped well after some resistance and reactivity.

I was very proud of “Skye” and her mama today and I was super proud of our boy. Who displayed what a Bull Terrier, or any dog for that matter. Should be able to be like .

Be your dogs advocate👌🏾❤️🐾

Breed them right.

Then raise them right and they’ll be balanced, neutral, sociable & a joy. And they won’t embarrass you when out😆🐾❤️

Impulse control:

Do you have issues with your Bullie when it comes to he or she having the ability to control their impulses.

For example:
* Open your front door and your bullies rushes out without any regards.
*Or can’t keep still prior to exiting or entering you home.

* You drive to the park, and have to gently and delicatley open your boot to let the wired up Bullie out. All the while telling your dog to wait,wait,stay,stay,stay…..noooooooo😆

Impulse control and teaching your Bullie this from a very early age and throughout its life. Is very important and will help with socialisation, safety and overall create a calmer Bullie. Without eradicating that fantastic “Bullietude”😊

This exercise is just one of many ways where impulse control applies and should be taught.

Always uping the difficulty level, once the foundations have been taught. Remember to do everything in levels. Start at level 1 & then work to 2,3,4,5 etc.

You don’t need lots of words. No, stop, wait, etc etc etc. Less in fact can be more!

Always finish on a high, never a low and know when the persevere and or to take a break.

Have a relatively easy life with your Bullie, not a life of daily survival. 😆

Be your Bullies advocate🙏🏾🐾❤️

Stimulation exercise:

This video and my actions were done purposely to demosnstrate how quick to stimuli Bull Terriers are. And therefore why it’s important from the outset. We as Bullie owners should Crete calm. Implement stucture, boundaries and work on their impulse control.

Bull Terriers are born loving life, born wanting to bound around, zoomie zoom zoom everywhere and a generally fun loving.

However what they also are, is dogs that have a decent prey drive, like to wrag things up when they have them in there mouths. Also they are very willing and capable to react when challenged & dominate if given half a chance.

My point is this:

There is absolutely no need to be the type of owner that theough are emotional attached to our Bullie. And our inability to control our emotions. Inadvertently create a place of stimuli for our bullies.

*Are you that person that comes in from work and presents excitement to your dog when greeting. And the when he or she gets over excited wants to then tell them off for not calming down.

*Are you the type of owner that when on the park, or play date. Tells your dog something like “go on then, go play, go on”. Or that favourite who’s this pookie, is that your friend” in that high pitched elevating tone.
Rather than juat letting dogs “be” and when they are ready or in a calm place then going to socialise under supervision.

With a dog that already comes pre-packaged (quick to stimulation.). We should be encouraging more calm inside and outside the home.

This overall creating a Bullie that is for the most part relaxed, without losing the Bullietude!

Calm, compliant and engaging but easy to redirect/re-task and just generally listen.

Watch the little pup (white) in the background in this video. And through my purposeful stimulation, what she then tries to do to her Aunty (in the beige jumper).

I start stimulating the Black/Brindle boy but it impacts them all.

In essence, if not doing so already.

Start the work to create a calm Bullie. As they’ll never lose that Bullie spirit. But what you Will get is an easier and more manageable Bullie that respects you, listens to you. And makes good decisions through your guidance👌🏾🐾

Key to success:

What is the key to successfully owning, living with & having a relatively ”well rounded” Bull Terrier.

It comes down to one simple word that crosses all elements.

The word is “Respect”

*Respect the breed & recognising fundamentally where it originated from, why and how it came to be and what it is capable of.

*Respect the fact that the breed itself in terms of the amount of time it’s existed. It is still relatively new compared to many of its dog counterparts. Therefore the breed is still evolving & as a Bullie owner. You must evolve also.

*Respect the fact of what it was bred to originally do. And therefore becuase of the afore mentioned. This breed still has inherent genetic drivers.
Those drivers being one of prey drive & a indomitable spirit. (I.E) is capable of and will without hesitation. Cause injury to other dogs or livestock if not trained and or handled correctly.

*Respect that a Bull Terrier is a Bull Terrier. Not a fur baby, not a horse for one’s toddler child to ride upon. Not a dog is naturally “neutral” to other dogs, per-sae. Not a dog that will hang off every word you say naturally. Like a collie or a golden retriever.

*Respect that if you respect the fact that you have to do your research, to buy with you head and not your heart.
That you have no choice but to put time, effort, sweat and many “F”… words in to learning and teaching this dog how to be a fully intergrated member of society. And for the most of them and you out there. This will apply.
And only the lucky few will have a bull terrier that looks like one but acts like gentle p***y cat.

This breed is nothing short of amazing and an absolute loveable, button pushing renegade.
However with firmness, fun, structure, calm energy combined with a sprinkle of no nonsense.

You will have a great dog that puts all the other breeds to shame. A dog that will love you and it’s family & all your friends to literal death.😆

But get it wrong, or try to wing it. Then, that’s a life of emotional pain for you all. And probably a rescue for the dog.

So just get it as right as possible. (And if you don’t know how to. Talk to, or get people into help to do)

Be an “advocate” for this fantastic breed, not a contributor to a poor reputation that they do not deserve.

This page has been created to share methods on getting the best out of our Bull Terriers. Any suggestions are our opinion only, and we are very much open to learning other methods from others.

Pleas feel to give the page a like/follow and or share with friends or other Bull Terriers owners. And we hope you get some benefit from it.😊

This page is aimed at those that own, have owned, or potentially want to own a Bull Terrier. And we will do our best to provide helpful hints and tips on how to be the best leader for your Bullie devil!

After all, Bullie owners are “special people” & togetherness & the sharing of the love of this breed is a community😊

This page belongs to T.B.T.A and simply put, nonsense is not tolerated.

For 20yrs, T.B.T.A have owned Stafford’s and Now multiple Bull Terriers. All of whom are “entire” and mixed genders. (And to think, one was once scared of dogs😆)

Our dogs live as part of the home successfully and we work with other dogs outside of the home.
Helping people, through leading by example, to understand their dogs better and create new and improved relationships and understanding between Human & Dog.

Bull Terriers:🐶🐾

Know what & who they are, the brief history is:

At the start of the 19th century, the “Bull & Terrier” breeds were developed to satisfy the needs for vermin control (hence is prey driven) and animal-based blood sports. (Hence can be willing to fight or show assertive behaviour.)

The bull and terriers were based on the Old English Bull Dog, (now extinct) and Old English White Terrier & possible other terriers. Also genetically there has been found to be the Dalmatian & The Pointer.

Their temperament:

Bull Terriers can be both independent and stubborn and for this reason are not considered suitable for an inexperienced dog owner.

A Bull Terrier has an even temperament and is amenable to discipline. Although obstinate, the breed is described by the Bull Terrier Club as particularly good with people.

Early socialization will ensure that the dog will get along with other dogs and animals..

Their personality is described as courageous, full of spirit, with a fun-loving attitude, children-loving dog and a perfect family member.

Although the breed has been a target of a 2008 study in Germany. They results found that Bull Terriers did not have any significant temperament difference from a Golden Retriever.

In my humble opinion the Bull Terrier is
“The Marmite dog”

I believe there are 4 categories of people to describe when it comes to Bull Terriers.

* People that absolutely love them, have done their research, and subsequently owned and successfully raised one if not several and choose them as their number 1 breed.

*People that are Intrigued by them & toy with the idea of owning one.

*People that think they are an aggressive dog,
pre-judge them & cross the road with their little “pookie” when they see you coming😆

And finally, the most unfortunate category

*People that get a bull terrier & have bought with their heart and not their head, therefore struggle to successfully raise, train and intergrate one into the household.
As a result, some have a life of bites, challenge, reactivity, destruction and general chaos😫

Bull Terriers are an amazing breed, however the work from the outset has to be done. Implementing Structure, boundaries, love & learning using different tactics to achieve what your idea of “good” looks like.

But doing the above is how one can achieve relative peace and an “enjoyable” co-existence with their K9 land shark.

(Firm, fair but fun is the way forward, with these reprobates😊😆😊)

Because apart from the rare ones you may sometimes get. On the whole, they aren’t easy & they will challenge, they will nip, push boundaries.

They will get over excited, they will not do for you today, what they would do for you yesterday.
They’ll even embarrass you at times, when they feel like spontaneously breaking out into “Zoomies” in the middle of the street.🤦🏾‍♂️

This is natural.
It’s part of their DNA.

Sweetness and like and all things fluffy with this dog can open a door to disappointment, stress and a feeling of helplessness.
For this dog is not silly, you give them an inch too soon in their pre-pubescent life, and they’ll take 10 miles!😆

Put the work in, understand the breed before you buy one and educate oneself. Get help where & if required.
So you can help a bull terrier be and excellent example of breed in the dog world & in society as a whole.
But most importantly, create for yourself & your Bull terrier , the the right environment and take the opportunity to have a beautifully funny, daily irritating, balanced, social, respectful and connected ❤️ to your Bull Terrier life.

“They are soooo worth it”😊❤️🐾❤️😊
