Good advice here and worth noting for sure when walking your dog!

Conker warning!
Another annual warning for us all to be aware of.
As autumn approaches and conkers are falling from the trees, please be aware of a two-fold danger to our dogs from the fruit of the Horse Chestnut Tree.
Firstly, the conkers if chewed and eaten, are poisonous.
Secondly, if they are swallowed whole they can cause a blockage in the dog’s intestine.
If it is suspected that a dog has ingested conkers then the recommended course of action is an urgent trip to the vet.
As always, prevention is better than cure, so never throw conkers for dogs to retrieve. Never encourage them to pick up or in any way play with conkers….Bob.

Meg has been missing from her farm since last Tuesday! Not seen in a week. She is reported in Dog Lost.
Missing St Ann’s Chapel area near Bigbury. Please all check garden, sheds and barns etc in case she is stuck.

Another warning about Rawhide!

Although rawhide chews come in lots of fun shapes and sizes, your dog can easily chew off and swallow large pieces, leading to a potential choking hazard or intestinal obstruction. What’s even worse is how rawhide is created. Rawhide is a by-product of the leather industry and is often washed and sterilized with a variety of (often harmful) chemicals, such as sodium sulfide, lime, chromium salts, bleach, and hydrogen peroxide. It is then molded and dyed to form what you see in stores today.
Please avoid them at all cost, no matter how pretty they market them!

Found safe and well!

Missing- Broadaford, Ivybridge area since late evening yesterday.
Lucy a small Jack Russell is elderly wearing a black collar with name and address tag.
She is white with faded brown marks.She is old and deaf.
Owners would like her home asap.
Please all check gardens, under cars, sheds and hedging in case she is stuck somewhere.

Spot The Difference🧐

A slightly unpleasant walk is now a pleasant and peaceful one, with the correct guardianship. After a couple of Behavioural modifications little Ziggy started to learn how much more enjoyable a walk could be without the pulling. His Guardian was much more at ease too, enjoying quality time 🐾

We need to be mindful of other animals especially on the Moors. Not knowing what’s around the corner or rock can lead to a direct confrontation and potential injury to either. Be the guardian your dog expects of you and keep everyone safe.

We would like to thank everyone for keeping your dogs on leads during ground nesting bird season. 🪹

While most birds have now flown the nest, there are still lots of livestock and young animals on the moor. Please keep dogs under close control and help protect the wildlife that call Dartmoor home 💚

A meet and greet has been arranged for Beau. Thank you to everyonne that applied we have other dogs waiting to come in so will keep your applications on file.

Beau a 13month entire male our latest visitor - he will be with us for a few days for assessment and will then be looking for his forever home. Reflecting on rescues today and recall my time with Seb
🩶 So many dogs due to circumstances beyond their control find themselves being categorised as aggressive, reactive or otherwise badly behaved. Often, it is the case, however, that the environmental situation they have found themselves in heavily influence their behaviour.

My initial assessment for behaviour issues involve a home visit followed by my report with suggested modifications and training programs to suit the guardian on a 121 basis.

Pleased to have been able to help here. Initial behaviourist contact from Anne who, having had two previous labs, could not understand why young Henry was mouthing her and acting up somewhat. We made a few environmental changes and with advice and a few training sessions the relationship between Guardian and Canine has been rekindled.

☀️ Heatstroke awareness 🌡️

Heatstroke is extremely dangerous for our pets, and potentially life threatening.

There are numerous causes of heatstroke, including walking your dogs during the hottest parts of the day, over exercising during hot weather, sitting in direct sunlight with no shade, leaving your dogs in cars and conservatories with minimal ventilation.

All of these are easily preventable and SHOULD NOT be happening!

Signs of heatstroke:
🌡️ excessive panting
🌡️ collapse
🌡️ seizures
🌡️ excessive drooling
🌡️ disoriented
🌡️ vomiting and diarrhoea

If you are in any doubt your pet might be suffering with any of these symptoms, contact your vet immediately for advice

Successful rehoming.

Bit of gentle socialisation for puppy poppy around her guardian’s sheep.

Starting to re-associate a farmer’s pet dog around sheep and encouraging not to chase sheep whilst promoting calm behaviour and scent work in a natural and positive way.

Progression to ‘off leash’ training for Poppy using voice and positive reward only.

Little ‘poppy’ undergoing 121 on leash training.

Bit of loose lead training today with Button an 8 month old pup with no previous training and already into the habit of otherwise previously disregarding his guardian’s ability to walk him.

A little bit of basic obedience work with a client seeking 121 rather than classes. Rufus in training as an emotional support dog.

121 puppy socialisation. Little cavapoo 16 weeks(white) meeting and learning manners from Digby a 4.5yr old chihuahua x sh*tzu. No other puppies to distract their natural behaviour.

Another clip of Flapjack relearning how to relax, share and socialise again.

Readjusting little Flapjack a 2.5yr old Patterdale who has had some previous bad experiences with other dogs and has become reactive. Teaching him to be more aware of his guardian, walk behind, use his nose to scent the treat and relax around other dogs.

Controlling your dog to walk behind you.

An 18 month old Lab which had no previous training and total disregard to recall. Take a conscientious Guardian and a few 121 obedience sessions and it can all change.

‘Scout’ a three year old wire haired pointer who had formed the habit of simply running and doing his own thing away from his guardian when off leash. By providing him with recall training and a reason to stay closer to his guardian he seemed to accept that this can actually prove to be even more fun.
