Bit of a recommendation from me!

If you have lost/broken your cage clips these ones are brilliant replacements! They fit my Alaska's and Mamble 100s, many which I bought 2nd hand so they didn't come with clips. Really reasonable price as well 😁

6 years ago today I started keeping rats again as an adult! I had three rats as a teenager (Rufus, Damian and Blaze) but so wanted to keep them again when I had a landlord who would let me!

The two in the cage are Ed and Otis! Ed was a Dumbo masked-something and Otis was an agouti hooded. Both came from a 'local breeder' who also ran a pet shop (since shut down due to neglect of animals 😬) - they took months and months to socialise.

I had a Mental Aventura cage ready for them but they were so small I was scared to put them in it so they went in an old mouse cage instead for a few weeks 😂

I've learnt so much since joining the National Fancy Rat Society and the NFRS members who were heavily involved in Rat Care UK - I'm so pleased I found them as now I know I'm giving my rats the best possible care I can!

Ed & Otis are long gone now but I like to remember them as being the boys who started it all (again!).

I hope everyone has a happy and healthy 2024 😊

2023 was the start of my breeding journey - I had three successful litters with lovely rats.

Next year I will be attending Bradford Champs and is my last planned show for the foreseeable future due to my baby being born in Feb! So depending on how I am coping there depends on what shows I will be able to go to.

I don't plan on giving up breeding but again depends on how baby is as to how many litters I have. I am hoping for more rex litters next year!

Some sad news, unfortunately my lovely Theo from Mesozoic Rattery had to be put to sleep yesterday morning. He had what we thought was a facial abscess that was being treated with antibiotics but he wasn't getting any better, he'd gone off his food and his eye was starting to swell as well. He was 27 months old so pretty good going and such a friendly chap, he has seen many ratties come and go over the years in my buck groups so it will be weird him not being in the buck cage any more! I miss him a lot ❤️

The babies from the Maddie X Windom litter have been s*x separated now and are going well. The rexes have lost their super curliness they had at about 3 weeks old - I'm interested to see how they will look in their next moult! Pictured is a little dumbo normal hair buck.

A simple set up for my doe group - the penultimate intro cage before they go back into the SRS XL (Which has been unoccupied for weeks now!!). Looking forward to getting back to just two cages again, makes feeding time a lot easier 😂

It's been a busy & stressful couple of weeks here!

Most of the babies from the Laura X BAM litter have gone to their new homes, just a pair of does who will be picked up at Bradford Champs still remaining. My keeper does and the remaining pair are currently in intros with my doe group, it's all going well.

Next up, Maddie developed a head tilt, probably at the worst possible time as she was still feeding her babies! Which meant she needed antibiotics but couldn't have steroids, luckily I caught the head tilt early on and it's not got any worse.

Sad news, but a couple of days ago I noticed Perky, one of my foundation bucks, had developed a big scab/abscess under his ear. Unfortunately this is the tell-tale sign of a Zymbal's Gland Tumour. These are inoperable and progress very quickly. Unfortunately he was put to sleep yesterday, before he could deteriorate. I am sad that he didn't have more time with me, but I am also grateful that he lives on in his nieces and nephews (Diane, Donna, RR and Dougie) ❤️

Ellfin Smee is the brother to Ellfin James &Ellfin Windom (Dad to my latest rex litter) who live with me. It's always great to know how related rats are doing! Congrats to Abi and April 🥰

Hooray, Zoë's book is out! I definitely recommend it for the general pet owner, especially if you are new to rats! And it will arrive in time for Christmas, so would make a great pressie for any rat people in your life 😁

Small animals are long-term commitments, not Christmas presents! 🐹❌

Any prospective owner must ensure they are ready for the responsibility of pet ownership with proper supplies, space, time, funds for veterinary care, research of the species, and a genuine desire to care for the animal. This is often not so when it comes to surprise gifts. Please do consider alternative gifts this Christmas! 🙂

It’s finally time to share- is here!

I’m so so excited to announce that I have been secretly been working hard on writing a book on rat care! This is something I have wanted to do for a really long time, but it’s taken multiple years to get to where we are now; a comprehensive and real tangible book on all aspects of pet rat care that I can hold in my hands.

I am really proud of this project; its been the biggest article I’ve ever written 😂 and it’s the accumulation of all the knowledge I’ve acquired during my time in the rat world and I can’t believe I am actually at the point of being able to share it with the world! It’s finally real!

Only one week until the book is available to purchase, and over the next couple of weeks I’ll be sharing loads more information, links and sneak peeks, and I’ll be showing you the front cover soon too! Yesterday I was with Ebonie from Bogglesandboops Small Pet Photography who has taken some absolutely beautiful photos of the book including the one you see below - more on that soon too!

The Madom litter is 3 weeks old now! They are very curious and friendly, just like their mum & dad.

Final count is:

5 x Dumbo Buck
1 x Dumbo Rex Doe
1 x Dumbo Doe
2 x Top eared Rex Doe

How there ended up being 10 Dumbo's in the litter I have no idea 😂 It's a good thing I like Dumbo and am sorely lacking in them 😁

I use Snowflake Supreme, Tesco cat litter and then just odds and sods for the bedding (hay, newspaper, paper strands). Mostly just because it's what I can get easily and cheaply near me - in the past I have used Finacard, Bedmax, Hempbedz, Auboise, Papelit Pellets... All good options and different rats will do better in different things!

If anyone has a Little Zoo Venturer split in two cages, you probably know how annoying it is to hang hammocks on the bottom half because theres no bars in the middle section!

I ordered some magnetic hooks from Amazon a while ago to stick to the middle tray but they were a bit useless and the hammocks kept falling off.

The other day I bought some magnetic eyelets below and they work perfectly! Really strong and you can fit a plastic C hook (shower curtain ones) through the hole easily. Well worth a buy 😊
