I just wanted to share an update for my business - currently there are no more classes planned for the near future as I’m starting a new full time job in the next few weeks.

What should I teach my puppy first?

This is one of the most common questions I get asked and I’ll start by saying there’s no right answer to it and mostly depends on the puppy you have in front of you.

But here are some basic skills you should first focus on when you bring home your new puppy:

1) Teaching them the value of responding to their name 📢

The first thing I do with my puppies is pair their name to food. I will throw a treat out just past them and as they turn back towards me I’ll call their name and reward them for coming back to me. This doesn’t replace a recall word but you want to make sure they understand that their name means something positive and fun.

We say our dogs names for a lot of different reasons throughout the day but it doesn’t hurt to top up the value in their name.

2) Patience around food 🍪

I love to make my training fun and exciting but you can never be without some self control in puppies. Practice with some treats in a closed hand, naturally most puppies will investigate. Once they sit nicely reward them for that second of waiting and build this gradually.

3) Toileting on cue!🧻

We can teach a dog to sit so why not teach them to go to toilet when you ask too. Practice having a word to encourage your dog to use the bathroom. First you want to wait until they’ve used the toilet on their own outside. Once they have finished praise them and add your word in there (I use “busy busy” for my puppies).

Once they get the hang of it ask them to go when you let them out for the loo and keep practicing!🎉
