Our first casualty of 2024 is this adult Wood Pigeon from Edinburgh. After an examination at the vets in Edinburgh he was brought over to us by Angela! Apart from being a little thin he also has a slight eye injury (not the one pictured) So using a bit of detective work I think he's probably hit a window and been stunned enough to be picked up and taken to the vets.

I think if we are extending the MARVEL naming theme into 2024 then he's got to be called Nick Fury!

See how you can help the birds at...

We did our first release of the year... the little female House Sparrow from St Madoes, Inchyra made a full recovery from her neck injury and was released this afternoon. We took her right back to the garden where she was found so she can return to her family/flock. We are so pleased that she's home.

She flew off so fast !!

I've had 2 new additions today!.... they're getting in before Hogmanay! . Firstly there is an adorable Feral Pigeon called 'Chicken Pickle' who was rescued and cared for byJanet and kindly brought down from Arbroath. 'Chicken Pickle' needs tube fed but will soon be self feeding I'm sure.
Secondly there is a young female House Sparrow from St Madoes who's possibly hit a window and hurt her neck. Thanks to Katie for rescuing her and bringing her over this afternoon!

Happy Hogmanay everyone! 🎊

*UPDATE* '.....Chicken Pickle' has started self feeding already!!

There was Christmas drama when I was through at my mum and dad's house for coffee.... All of a sudden there 'arose such a clatter'... as something came down the chimney! It wasn't Santa but a Blue Tit.
My dad took this video as I rushed to get a box.
Thankfully he wasn't injured and after a quick clean up was released in the garden. The only presents he left were a few droppings ....Lets hope nobody else gets visited by 'Santa Blue Tit' 🎅🐦
🎶'Merry Christmas to you all and to all a good night!'🎶

This stunning Starling was rescued after being caught by a cat here in Milnathort. Luckily Paul and his family rushed him up to me. This little one was an escape artist and got out the cage twice!! Even with double pegs holding the sliding door shut. Starlings are so smart and he figured it out not long after arriving. Thankfully he made a quick recovery after a course of meds and lots of food. Paul released him back where he was found yesterday!

Another Redwing arrived at Baby Beaks a few days ago! He was brought down from Coupar Angus after being caught by a cat. He has one solitary tail feather left and a wing injury so he'll definitely be spending the festive season here. Thankfully tail feathers grow back reasonably quickly. He's a bit of a chunky chap and loves his apples! 🍏
Thanks Lisa for rescuing him and bringing him down.

Remember the little Wood Pigeon from Falkland who was blown out his nest during Storm Babet..... well he got released today! He spent nearly 2 months here... growing up and getting ready for a life in the wild. We waited until the weather was a bit nicer for him and there is plenty of food out there if he wishes to stay in the area. Good luck 'Storm'

This adult Feral Pigeon was found not flying in Kirkcaldy. After a few days being spotted in the garden he was rescued and brought to Baby Beaks. It will take a few weeks to get him strong and flying... in the winter birds have to be tough! But he's certainly improving. Thanks to Fi for rescuing him, and for the donation of seeds!! ❤️

A very beautiful Redwing has arrived at Baby Beaks. They migrate to Scotland in the winter. Unfortunately this one was caught by a cat in Edinburgh. Thankfully he was rescued and is getting treated here. Thank you to Angela for bringing him over. Fingers crossed he makes a full recovery and can get back with his flock! Atleast he's a lot cosier with lots of food and berries!

This very handsome young Feral Pigeon was successfully released back with his flock in Kirkcaldy last week. He spent a couple of weeks recuperating after being found 'grounded'. Thankfully there were no injuries to worry about. So after lots of good food, some cage rest and then some exercise, he built up good condition again and was flying very strong.... he tested my net catching skills!!

A very big thank you to the Thursday Knutty Knitters for donating these wonderful nests and nest liners! They are a small group of knitters and crocheters who meet every Thursday in Oxgangs Library, Edinburgh making items for a variety of charities. The nestlings will be spoiled for choice next year! Thank you all 🐣💖 they are beautifully made and perfect!

This little Wood Pigeon nestling from Falkland was blown from his nest during the storm. He was found on the ground huddled next to his sibling who had unfortunately died. They were drenched and cold and found by Karen who quickly rescued him, dried him off and kept him warm.
I doubt there are any Pigeon nests left in the trees after those strong winds. Thankfully I've got him safe and cosy now, getting tube fed and cuddled up in fleece.

As Scotland is battered by Storm Babet I thought I'd brighten up our day by sharing these photos we took on holiday in Kefalonia, Greece just last week. Lucky pigeons sunning themselves in Argostoli and a very close encounter with a sea turtle 🥰 Kefalonia is the most beautiful island and our amazing accommodation and hosts at 'il Giardino' (❤ thanks Sissy & Thomas) Needless to say we are back and Baby Beaks is up and running again as usual!

Here's another release that happened last week ❤️ Our 3 House Martins flew off really well, there was a group of 10 flying high above the cottage so hopefully they teamed up with them.

We are going to have a break until Mon 16th Oct. We haven't had our honeymoon yet (we got married in 2019) so are heading to Greece next month. So to make things easier we're stopping taking new patients in until after we come back.
Things will get back to normal after that. Thanks for understanding.

Our two bullfinches were released last week, they looked stunning and they're probably our last small garden birds of the season. I got some video of the release (always difficult from the aviary) so will post that later. Thankfully they were very quick to self feed.. possibly because they were always trying to compete with each other. Siblings eh?!

This must surely be the last batch of House Martins this season! The three amigos at the top are almost ready.... however the tiny one has still got a lot of growing to do. Although with his incredible appetite I'm sure he'll make it 🤞

Both of these juvenile Wood Pigeons were released yesterday after a short stay at Baby Beaks one had hit a window and the other had been attacked. Thankfully there were no serious injuries, they just needed some time to recover.

It's definitely Pigeon time with a few young ones getting into trouble out there!

Just when you think nestling season is coming to an end these two Bullfinch babies arrived! They were found on a footpath and rescued by Morag & Addie yesterday. I thought it would be nice to get a wee video when moving them to a new knitted nest. They have been named Fred and Ginger ❤️ I'm sure it won't be long before they're dancing around outside the nest!

These two little Collared Dove nestlings were rescued yesterday after a cat sadly killed their parent and destroyed their nest. Thankfully Amy managed to rescue them when they fell. Apart from being very shy they are both doing well getting tube fed and enjoying some cosy time in the brooder!

This gorgeous Swiftlet was rescued after being found on the ground. He was overweight and must have fallen from his nest. We took a video when he first arrived.

Gradually his weight has dropped and he's been doing 'press ups' to strengthen his flight muscles. Over the past couple of days he's been eager to go, his weight, wing length and plumage is perfect.... but unfortunately the weather was not.

Thankfully today the sun is shining here, so we took the opportunity to release him. He flew so well and will spend all his time on the wing (even sleep flying) until maturity.

Remember the 4 Goldfinch nestlings that were rescued before being attacked by kids?.... I'm very happy to say they got released yesterday 👍❤️ We named them Wanda, Vision Billy & Tommy.

They've done so well and we're very strong. They absolutely loved munching on the ground up sunflower hearts we gave them and have already been spotted at the feeders in the garden! Enjoy your freedom in 'Westview'! (... just don't pass Ellis Ave) 😉

This poor adult Wood Pigeon was hit by a taxi in Edinburgh, the taxi drove off but luckily the Pigeon was rescued. Angela Rose took the Pigeon to West Edinburgh Vets, where the vet Karen examined and xrayed him ..... he also got named Captain Pigeon! Many thanks for all the effort from a great team to help him, and Marsh for bringing him over.

Captain Pigeon is currently recovering from his shoulder injury here at Baby Beaks and his flight is gradually improving. Well done Captain Pigeon!

This is the story of a little House Sparrow who was weak and left behind by his siblings after they fledged the nest. All he had to cuddle up to was a wellie. Lisa from Luncarty found him at the back door and brought him down to me. Luckily on that very day a Dunnock fledgling came in via Nadia from Forth Hedgehog Hospital. They instantly became best pals and cuddled up together. They grew up together and yesterday were released... together ❤️

Many thanks to RSPB Loch Leven for bringing this juvenile Robin to me the other day. Someone had brought the Robin to their centre after a cat had got it. Thankfully the Robin is recovering well and is just waiting on some feathers to grow back!
Young Robins don't get their distinctive red breast until they are around 3 months old.

Perhaps his MARVEL name can be 'Winter Soldier'
because they are tough, like to fight and defend their territory... and they look so cute in the snow!

These 4 nestling Goldfinches were saved after a young girl alerted her mum that some kids were going to "punch and kick them to death" 😡
How brave of her to intervene and get help.
Thankfully all 4 of them are safe now and looking much better than when they first arrived (photo)

They were very scared and quiet but after a bit of coaxing are now gaping and taking food. It won't be long until they fledge!

The Marvels got released recently too. I'm always amazed when I see their first photos and how small Miss Marvel was when she came in. I feed them every day and I hardly notice them growing! Lol.

We've had so many young Starlings at the feeders.... the makings of a murmuration!

Here are more releases that have been happening recently. It's the turn of the Swallows and House Martins, including Tiny, Medium & Large and Tufty. We've had huge flocks of them congregating along the farm road and feeding above the fields, so these little ones have a lot of companions out there.
