It's House Martin mayhem here.... we have 66 House Martins.... and counting! 😲

All this dry weather and high temperatures has caused many House Martin nests to dry up, crack and collapse 😢 ... and so many babies are dehydrated!

The parents build the nest with little blobs of mud that they carry in their beak and slowly build the cup shaped nest. It's sticks to the wall under the eaves. But just like clay it starts to dry up and become brittle. This is especially true if their nest is built on a south facing wall.

Sometimes the intense heat builds up so much that the babies can't take it anymore and jump out.

Thanks to all your kind Amazon donations we have a new set up this year. Each group has their own detached tub instead of the tenement nest boxes last year!

Also it's costing £200 a month to keep them supplied with mealworms and Waxworms! So that's where your donations have been going. The little House Martins would like to say thank you 🐦 x

Here's just a small selection of the 65 new patients that have arrived at Baby Beaks in July.....in just 17 days 😱

This year seems particularly busy for some reason? 🤔

Lots and lots of House Martins!
Will do a post about them tomorrow.

Thanks to all the people who have been donating, absolutely brilliant and much appreciated! 🥰🐦

This is what happened when my other juvenile Woodpecker 'Buzz' escaped his cage while cleaning, flew through to the kitchen and attached himself to the fridge magnets! 😳 😅

Clearly his wing injury has healed!
The fridge door took a hammering.

Obviously plans were made to get him released. So yesterday evening we found a lovely spot near to where he was rescued. Now he has proper tree trunks instead of kitchen appliances to grab on to.

The life of a rehabber ! 😆

Say hello to the 200th baby of the season.... this is a baby Wood Pigeon who has just hatched! 🐣

The little hatchling was rushed over from Edinburgh yesterday along with it's egg shell and another unhatched egg.

Things are extremely busy just now and yes.... I'm struggling to keep up. 😫

I can still accept nestling and fledgling garden birds and the occasional tiny Pigeons!

Please bare with me, especially with phone calls and messages as I really have to prioritize the babies I already have. Lots of very hungry and demanding beaks!

Woody the juvenile Woodpecker has been in my care for over a month. He hit a window really hard and was unable to use his legs or stand up 😢

I took him to Fife Exotic Vets for an examination and to to see if there was a chance of recovery. Thankfully there was some grip in one foot, so a course of medication was prescribed and I've been carefully giving him physio and keeping his feathers in good condition.

Unbelievably he's started to recover and can now use both legs and stand. He can fly a little but needs to get stronger before release!

I'm so happy for Woody 🥰 such a sweet little soul. He's one of two juvenile Woodpeckers I'm looking after at the moment, the other is called Buzz who's been very naughty 😅.....more on that tomorrow!

Calling all drivers! 🚗 How would you like to help Baby Beaks?? .... this year I have been helped by UK Wildlife Transporters a fantastic organisation that gets birds in need to rescue centres and rehabbers. They help licenced rehabbers across the UK.

Just the other day, this nest of House Martins had fallen in Pittenweem. The guy didn't drive and he couldn't get help. It was too far for me to drive to between feeds..... so I called on UKWT.

🚗 One of their brilliant volunteer drivers, Sue from Glenrothes, jumped in the the car and made the massive round trip to bring them to me! It was a really hot day, what a great effort 🥰

Have a look at their website or message me and think about becoming a volunteer. There is also an option to have your fuel costs paid for if you wish. You can also support their great work.

I've managed to get quite a few releases done recently with another 18 birds away yesterday! 🎉 My 'miscellaneous flock' in the aviary consisted of Sparrows, Robins, Dunnock, Chaffinch and Great T**s! Also a group of Goldfinches last week. A few wood Pigeons and another 2 batches of House Martins!

And still I'm one cage away from being full....😅

Lots more House Martins have arrived.... and the first Swift!

Here are some of the wee House Martin nestlings that I'm caring for just now! So cute. 🥰

We have a little hatchling from near Coupar Angus who I've named Patsy after one of her rescuers. She fell from her nest and unfortunately her sibling died. But Patsy is really strong!

Also a group of House Martins who were found in a care home in Arbroath. They were being looked after by one of the residents! Once discovered they were rushed down here. They're called the Febreeze Babies!

And a little House Martin from East Caulder who had also fallen from a partially broken nest. He's called Baby Wipe Baby ( .....they're named after the cardboard boxes they arrived in 😅 )

These two beautiful baby Blackbirds arrived by train from Arbroath !!! I couldn't believe it 😲

Their rescuer, had found them on the street and popped them in a cardboard box. The next minute he's on the train from Arbroath to Perth and was going to get a taxi from Perth to Kinross!

Ofcourse we raced up and collected them from Perth train station between baby feeds. Many thanks to Diego from South America for such an amazing effort.

The Blackbirds definitely needed rescued as they were both extremely thin and frail. Underneath those fluffy feathers I can feel every bone 😢
But they are eating well and getting stronger.

I've had birds brought by motorbike, bus, bicycle and now train... what's next.... helicopter. (Actually a few years ago I got a pigeon from an oil rig in the North Sea transported by helicopter 🚁 )

Hi everyone 👋 I'm the 150th baby of the season!
This little Feral Pigeon nestling was rescued after being found on the gound in Dunfermline. He's far too young to be out the nest! He's got a lot of white fluff on him so I think he's going to be a Fancy Feral 😍.... he's giving a little wing wave!
It looks like he's got a wee thumb 👍 lol

Things are really busy with lots of new babies! They're coming from all over Scotland... more on that tomorrow!

Thank you for all the Amazon donations. I'm building up a big stock of everything which is fantastic 🥰🐦🐣
