Lola and Lilo, the two Wood Pigeons from St Andrews, were released yesterday. It's so nice they became buddies after their dramatic rescues. Remember Lola was rescued out the water by the SSPCA!! A few other pigeons got released too...I'm taking advantage of a break in the weather 🌤

☎️...Also my phone has packed in so I can't receive or make calls 🙄. If anyone is trying to contact me please use messenger.

If you would like to support Baby Beaks and the birds in my care please see my website below 🐦🐥🙏

URGENT* there's an injured Feral Pigeon near the museum in Perth. Is there anyone in the area who can quickly check? The person messaging couldn't stop and rescue the Pigeon.

An injured Robin was rescued in Saint Madoes yesterday. Alanna got her Dad to drive her to Kinross with the little bird who has an injured leg. After some treatment the Robin was feasting on mealworms and thankfully survived the night 🥰

Also Claire from Wallace Vets in Broughty Ferry made an epic journey to bring a very cute Feral Pigeon to Kinross last night. The Pigeon had been handed into her work and was very hungry!
Both are doing well this morning.

A very dramatic rescue!! Thanks to the SSPCA 🙏On Sunday I got a call about a baby Wood Pigeon in St Andrews that had come out the nest and ended up stuck in a very dangerous spot. Thankfully a passer-by, Anna, heard the bird and realised help was needed fast as the water was rising!
I realised there was no way I could get to it so I called on the SSPCA to help. Thankfully one of their dedicated Fife team, Lea Bowskill, came to the rescue and managed to scoop the baby out the water!

The little Pigeon is drying off here at Baby Beaks and doing well. Anna has named this one Lola.... to go with Lilo from last week!

Meet some recent admissions to Baby Beaks 🙌
Bill & Ben were rescued near Kinross after their tree was trimmed. The person responsible was devastated and had checked. But it's a warning that Pigeon nesting season is not over!

Also Lilo was rescued by a very kind person in St Andrews who found the Pigeon on the street. She cared for him and was even willing to get a taxi to bring him over. Such dedication! We eventually managed to collect him.

Then there's Mike from Dysart who is a classic 'Scruff', the name I give scrawny, thin Feral Pigeons! Mike has a wing and foot injury too. Luckily he is part of a flock that visits a Baby Beaks supporters garden. So hopefully we can return him back to his family!

Little 'Fuzzball' grew up into a very sleek Collared Dove 🥰

Fuzzball was rescued in Rosyth at the beginning of September and spent the first few weeks getting tube fed and kept cosy in the brooder.
Then she very quickly started pecking at seeds before eventually moving out to the aviary!

She got released last week 🎉

Well done fuzzy 👏

The little 'Pitlochry House Martin' got released at the weekend 🎉 Luckily he was not alone, I had another late one come in and they got released together. They flew off really strong, and seemed to stick together as they went up high above the house.

It's interesting to know that there are still some House Martins around in Scotland. Just yesterday a group fledged from their nest in Alyth !! Their family all swooping around. The person called me as they were concerned about one that they found on the ground, but it took off and joined the family.

It all seems very late this year.... any later and the only way these House Martins are getting to Africa is with a British Airways flight out of Heathrow! 😄✈️

Many thanks to Wendy Crighton for going on a little rescue mission to Killiecrankie yesterday to collect a House Martin...... yes you heard that right ... another HOUSE MARTIN !!!! 🤯

He was the sole survivor of a collapsed nest in Pitlochry and was cared for overnight by Lauren who then took him to her work awaiting collection. You can see the story here:

Wendy collected the House Martin and I met her at Perth, and now he's settled in and very happy!

Great group effort everyone 👏

The winner of the cutest face competition 2025 is definitely this little House Martin. 🥰 This week has seen the last of the House Martins get released 🎉 I've had 57 in total this year!

It always feels like the end of the summer when the last ones leave.

They travel south to sub-saharan Africa to spend the winter. Then they return home to their little nests on the eaves of our houses in March/April.

Adorable little birds who's numbers are in decline, so every nest is precious!

These 3 adorable little Goldfinches were released this week after being here since the beginning of August. The first was rescued near Leuchars when the nest was blown down. Then the very next day two more nestlings of the same age came in from outside Dunfermline.

Ofcourse they all ended up together and gradually grew into beautiful little fledglings. They won't get their full adult colours until after their first moult.

Goldfinches are hyperactive 'chatty' little babies and there's always alot of competition at feeding time! Standing on each other, pushing and shoving, rolling around. Then they sit together like little angels as if nothing just happened!

Such a big moment.... the last two Swifts have been released 🎉🎉 I've been looking after them for over a month. One was very emaciated when he came in and I didn't think he'd make it.

They always liked to snuggle together so it was nice that they could be released together. Both were at the correct weight and wing length for release and we found a good spot, on a slope to give them the space to gain lift.

We even got a fly-past from one... a last goodbye!

Now they will be on the wing for 2 years before hopefully having babies of their own. Swifts can fly continuously for 3 - 4 years without landing. They sleep, eat, even mate on the wing. Flying above storms and travelling great distances.

That's why it's truly rewarding to give these young ones that chance to live a remarkable life.
