Get Potato Home A page dedicated to getting a street dog named Potato to the UK

27/07/2023

Pototo's fund has now been donated to the wonderful charity LucasHelpsDogs. He entered our lives so briefly and then he was gone 💔

He touched so many lives in that short time and brought us together in our ambition to help him, and then stepped aside when his body couldn't fight anymore so that other street dogs like him could have a better life than he had. His legacy will be that in his name 42 street dogs will be neutered/spayed and vaccinated, ending their suffering of having to endure pregnancy after pregnancy and having puppies that would end up having a deprived and unloved existence like Potato did.

Thank you all from the bottom of our hearts for your support on this journey. This has proved that anything is possible if you try hard enough, even if the ending isn't what you'd hoped for.

Our beautiful Pototo, we will love you forever. You are now resting with other dog friends in a place where nothing can hurt you any more. Promise kept, you will never be alone again ❣️🥔❣️

Hi everyone. Thanks for your patience while we had a little time to grieve Potato's passing.

We've settled on a dog charity to receive the funds from the gofundme fundraiser. The charity is called 'Lucas Helps Dogs' and we really believe in their charity objective. have a goal to reduce the number of suffering street dogs and cats in Sri Lanka through spay and neuter clinics. Rabies is still prevalent in this poverty-stricken country and the charity strives to ensure all animals receive a vaccination against the disease. There are millions of animals living in dangerous and inhumane conditions and therefore the charity seeks to fund emergency treatment when it is required. is also working to increase public knowledge of animal welfare by educating locals.

Street animals are mostly seen as pests by many locals and are seriously mistreated, ignored and malnourished. They are shot, beaten or boiled to death, their paws or tails chopped off or intentionally run over by tuk tuks. With so many dogs, every day they are victims of road traffic accidents, dog fights and infectious diseases, they produce numerous litters of puppies every year which becomes a vicious circle.

Unfortunately, there is a lack of veterinary care, food, water and safe place for them to sleep.

The best way to help the street dogs is to educate the locals about animal welfare and CNVR – catch, neuter, vaccinate, release.

There are approximately 5 million street dogs in Sri Lanka and therefore reducing the population through spay and neuter clinics is the first step in helping these poor animals.

Any funds left in the gofundme after 21st July 2023 will be transferred to so please get in touch ASAP if you'd like your donation returned.

In the meantime I encourage you all to check out

It is with a heavy, heavy heart that we let you know dear Potato passed away yesterday.

It was always a long shot. A long shot to get him well again, a long shot to get him back to the UK. But it was a shot we were willing to take.
He was in such an awful state when we found him and the years of neglect finally caught up to him. His little body finally gave up. We are so grateful he was loved for 6 weeks, cared for for 6 weeks, sheltered and fed for 6 weeks. He didn't die in fear by the side of the road.

We are utterly devastated. We had already begun to imagine Potato in our lives, making plans for the future and setting out a place for his bed in the home. I imagined him sunbathing in the garden, coming to the pub and exploring the woods together.

Potato had been unwell for a few days, the vet visited him late on Friday evening to administer some antibiotics for his poorly tummy and suspected respiratory infection. Hours later, he was gone. We are investigating the cause of his death and will keep our followers updated.

We would like to thank you, from the very bottom of our hearts, for your words of support, your hope, your generosity. I am too grieved right now to say much more. We will keep Potato's social media accounts running for the foreseeable future.

To anyone who donated - please contact us (by Instagram or Facebook messenger) if you wish for your donation to be returned to you. There will be no judgement if this is what you choose, but please do so within the next month. For those who do not wish for their donation to be returned, we will be donating the remainder of the gofundme account to a Sri Lankan dog rescue charity. More details to follow.

Despite the shock, grief, anxiety and sadness - we do not regret a single thing we did for little Potato, and we would do it again in a heartbeat. No animal deserves to suffer. I encourage you all to hug your pets extra today.

Thank you, team Potato 💕🥔

Thank you ALL for sharing it with us and making it possible with your kindness and support. Potato is rising from the ashes and continues to slowly climb that mountain to the top 🤎🥔🤍🥔

Pooing Potato! Although this is a fairly average thing for a doglet to do, Potato was quite constipated for a while after rescue. His body, though thin, is getting back to normal and starting to do normal things 🙂❣️💩🥔

Running Potato with giraffe legs! He looks like he is weight bearing slightly on his injured leg. Amazing! Now he just needs to concentrate on putting on some pounds...

Sweet Potato. We can't wait to see you again one day soon 💕

Potato being a bit of a diva, being hand fed bones from his broth bowl 😄
It's clear to see his progress but also this video shows how frail he still is. I still can't believe that he was even alive in the state we found him in. Bless him and all animals that are suffering.
