Archie and I were demos for Equine and Canine Solutions Polework for Rehab talk last night.
A really informative talk about the benefits of Polework and some brilliant exercises to use at home!
🌟As well as having in-patients, I also offer mobile rehabilitation services to help get your horse back to work following an injury, post-op or just to strengthen and condition🌟
🔹Whether it be long reining, lunging, hacking or schooling, I can help to get you and your horse back on track.
🔹Lessons are also offered from a rehab perspective, working closely with you and your horse to provide detailed programs and helping you to understand what exercises will benefit your horse.
⭐️ARCHIE⭐️
"Trotting over poles does not increase peak force upon landing compared to work without poles but does increase hind limb flexion" - Hillary Clayton, 2015.
Archie is a 14year old Irish Draft with an impressive showing record as a hunter. After competing at the Royal International Horse Show last year, he took a few months off to relax. This year, he has returned to work by following a rehabilitation programme which began with 6 weeks long reining which combined the use of poles in walk and the use of some work on the equiami in trot to increase his cardiovascular fitness.
Archie now alternates with some ridden and ground work, and yesterday began to incorporate some trot work on the long reins with the use of poles. Archie struggles to engage his right hind which you can see clearly in this video but can also be identified by a lack of true flexion and stiffness on a particlar rein, a loss of connection in the hand and a hollowing of the spine. The weight of a rider puts the back into extension (hollowing), making hind limb flexion even more difficult for your horse to achieve true engagement.
For Archie, we have use a fan exercise with 6 poles to do 4 times per week. We use long lines to support him from the inside as well as the outside and to also encourage the hind leg to step through. Archie finds this exercise hard, you can see this at the moments where he hollows. I will post a follow up video after 2 weeks to show you Archie's progress.
🌟Meet Archie, our latest 'In-Patient'🌟
Archie has always been concerned with things going on behind him and can be quick to react with a rider on board with a tendency to nap. We will be spending some time building Archie's strength from behind and through his core whilst keeping him thinking forward.
We will keep you updated with his progress!
