Flashing collares de invierno

FLASHING COLLARS: A WARNING. Every year, as the evenings get longer and darker for those of us in the northern hemisphere, we warn owners using illuminated dog collars never to put them on FLASHING mode. This is because, on a sensory level, the flashing light can not only be incredibly stressful and unpleasant for many collies, but may even trigger epilepsy in more susceptible dogs. So always put them on STILL mode instead, when you take them out for those darker walks. Or use other means to make both yourself and your dog more visible.

**Terrible Google English translation below**
Just as people need a gradual introduction when we start a new exercise, dogs also require an adequate pace to adapt. Motivation and enjoyment are essential in physical activity, both for them and for us.

Forcing an out-of-shape dog to run long distances can easily cause problems, from muscle injuries to stress or aversion to the activity. Therefore, we start with short and moderate sessions, observing how Edarra responds and adjusting the pace according to her condition and desire.

Gradual training will also help you strengthen your pads and adapt to exercise safely and positively. Just as in our own routines, consistency and care are essential to move forward without affecting the well-being of the body and mind.

For example, on Friday we went out to practice with Tamara, but we ended up aborting the session because Edarra didn't want to run. Because? There could be many reasons. That same morning he had spent two hours running and playing in an immense space. In addition, she had been very agitated for several days with the arrival of a kitten at home, and adult dogs need to sleep between 12 and 14 hours a day; Edarra had barely rested. It's also possible that he just didn't feel like it or didn't feel good.

In the end, the important thing is to respect their times and disposition, understanding that each dog has its own rhythm. With patience and observation, we can help Edarra enjoy exercise without pressure, promoting her health and, above all, her happiness.

This post helps really well to understand Bilbo's half border collie ADN. He doesn't look collie but his brain and actions are so his behaviour! Working with this dog is like completing a PhD in animal behaviour 😍🤭🤣

FOR THE BENEFIT of anyone who may have previously missed it, today we are repeating our breed expert Carol Price's feature on working instinct in the BC

UNDERSTANDING ‘WORKING’ INSTINCT AND
IMPULSE IN THE BORDER COLLIE

One of the most consistently misunderstood aspects of the Border collie - and especially among those newer to the breed – is the ‘working instinct’ that runs through their whole DNA as dogs, and drives so much of their whole mental outlook and behaviour. It lies at the heart of what makes them the most brilliant sheepdogs in the world – as so often illustrated in our sheepdog videos on this page - but can also cause many problems for owners if not sufficiently understood and managed.
WHAT IS WORKING INSTINCT?
When we talk about 'working instinct' in collies, what we really mean is a set sequence of behaviours and actions - namely eyeing, stalking, chasing and herding - that the dog feels compelled to engage in, and repeat over and over again, once they have locked on to a chosen moving target. These behaviours, in turn, originate from the wolf's natural pattern of hunting, but have been genetically adapted and enhanced in Border collies, for generations, to make them more responsive to human commands and control.
What is also critical to understand is that your dog’s ‘working instinct’ can be switched on by literally anything that moves, or can be made to move by the dog, or which the dog anticipates might move at some time. In other words it is movement, and the control of it, that these dogs are most obsessed with, rather than just livestock itself. As livestock just happen to be the target sheepdogs have traditionally been trained to direct their working instinct upon.

UNDERSTANDING YOUR OWN DOG’S INSTINCTS
If your collie won’t be working livestock, then the two things that will still be of most significance to any owner are how strong their dog's working instinct happens to be - as this can vary greatly from dog to dog - and what they choose to direct this instinct upon, in the absence of any livestock to work with.
The latter can be absolutely critical, especially in dogs with stronger working instinct and drive. Because if you do not select, in advance, what your dog's substitute working target is going to be (of which more in a moment), they will simply choose one instead for themselves - and it could be anything from traffic and trains, to cyclists, joggers, birds, water, dust or leaves. Anything in fact that suitably satisfies the working/chasing instincts in the dog.

And once your dog’s instincts have escaped in this way on to any manner of less desirable targets, and the dog gets some ongoing mental reward for fixating on them and chasing them, you may find it ever harder to get this behaviour back under your control.

CHOOSING THE RIGHT TARGET FOR THE INSTINCT
In our illustration here, for example, we see a young Border collie who has been immediately transfixed by pigeons moving in front of her. All it would take for her to then become ever more obsessed with stalking and chasing them would be for her to be allowed to do it a number of times and find this highly exciting and addictive.
So before she can do this, using a long training line, she is immediately distracted back to her more ‘acceptable’ working target - i.e. a ball - which she is allowed to chase and find highly exciting instead. To the point where the pigeons around her then become quickly forgotten - and will remain so, as long as she has her own specific target to chase and 'work' instead.

This process of training her budding working instinct on to a specific and more acceptable target – i.e. the ball – began in her earliest puppyhood, and well before she was able to pick any other alternative target instead. She is also taught a 'leave it!' command, which tells her that anything else she is about to approach to chase is out of bounds.

WHY A TOY?
The point of using a ball as a substitute ‘working target’, is that this is something you can totally control yourself, unlike so many other moving things your dog may feel compelled to chase instead. It can also be used as a constant reward for other forms of desirable behaviour in your dog – like dropping down and waiting on command, or focusing on you for some time before they can have their ball. Exercises like these also keep your dog in better mental balance, and stop them from becoming too over-excited. As the more excited a collie gets, the more they lose their focus or level of responsiveness to any command you may give them.

If your dog’s working instincts have already escaped on to the ‘wrong things’ it is still possible to redirect them on to a more chosen target like a toy later in life. It may take more time and persistence to wean them off other chase targets they have already selected for themselves, but I have still seen owners achieve this very many times.

BETTER DISCIPLINING THE DOG’S MIND AND ACTIONS
Working instinct is also something you must learn to respect and accept in your collie, as something about their essential make-up they cannot change. You cannot get rid of it or 'train it out' of them, but you can learn how to better understand it and better control it, through a process of better disciplining your dog’s mind and actions.

You will notice that any good shepherd, like our own Cathy Cassie, takes total control of their dog’s actions around a moving working target – i.e. livestock – with appropriate training. In terms of how and when they can approach it, and at what speed, and when they need the dog to stop or come off the livestock and back to them. And any pet collie needs to be trained in the same way with exercises – see end of feature – that keep their chase/working instincts far more under your control.

This way your dog always remains sufficiently fulfilled, physically and mentally, with their own substitute ‘working target’ (toy) but you also maintain sufficient control over anything they do next. For once you are able to totally control your dog’s movements around their substitute working target/favourite chase toy, the same training should allow you the same control should they ever try to chase anything else.

THE MISUSE OF CHASE TOYS
Balls or chase toys, however, should be used as instruments of teaching, reward and keeping the dog in suitable mental balance/focus when working with or responding to you. They should not be so perpetually over-used or abused that your collie becomes excessively over-stimulated and stressed from the excitement of running after them non-stop. Or to the point where they become totally obsessed with the toy and can no longer think straight or take in any other command you may give them.

Nor should collies be allowed to use toy chasing as a substitute for socially engaging with others around them, as this can just further encourage more anti-social patterns of behaviour, or even toy guarding aggression. There is a real art to using a ball as a working target in training, in a way that keeps the dog fulfilled and in optimum mental balance, and their focus more continually on you, while also encouraging more sociable behaviour with others whenever necessary or required.

The more you understand about your dog's working instinct, and learn how to work with it more positively, the better your bond with your dog will get, and the more rewarding your lives together will be. Meanwhile far more on working instinct in the Border collie appears in BOOK ONE of my BREED APART trilogy (blue cover) SECRETS OF THE WORKING MIND and the kind of training and exercises you need to do with your collie to keep their working instinct under optimum control is fully outlined in BOOK TWO (red cover) – ESSENTIAL LIFE SKILLS AND LEARNING.

Yesterday Eda and I had our first walk in la huerta**

For the moment I am avoiding the Kingdom of Rabbits 🐇🐰as Edarra gets too aroused and can't think properly around them.

In this part of the countryside there are fewer rabbits. It's a good place to progress my recall training by adding some "lower" level distractions. My reward: pasta leftovers 🍝 something she rarely eats so it is high value.

Oh boy, soon in our walk we encountered three massive storks. They looked tiny in the video but they were huge and weren't that far. I watched Eda like a hawk, letting her take the environment and distractions in but recalling her quickly, before she decided to chase the birds.

Eda has a high prey drive and it was windy. So I had to monitor her body language closely. Probably I am perceived as the most unfriendly neighbour in the village. My attention is on the dogs and I don't interact much with other people passing by🤣🤣🤣

She did super well during this walk and we both could enjoy and relax. Bliss❤️

*** Wikipedia's definion of la huerta
A huerta (Spanish: [ˈweɾta]) or horta (Catalan: [ˈɔɾta], Portuguese: [ˈɔɾtɐ]), from Latin hortus, "garden", is an irrigated area, or a field within such an area, common in Spain and Portugal, where a variety of vegetables and fruit trees are cultivated for family consumption and sale. Typically, individual huertas belong to different people; they are located around rivers or other water sources because of the amount of water required, which is usually provided through small canals (acequias). They are a kind of market garden.

🇪🇸 Traducción de Google abajo

🎉Bilbo and Edarra got their Spanish passports and their chips have been officially registered in their new country!

💉🦟They have also been vaccinated for leishmaniasis.

🩼❤️‍🩹🏥 The vet was busy today as she also checked Bilbo's joints and prescribed antiinflammatories for his achey hips.

Veterinary cooperative care has always been a priority of mine. B&E's excellent patient behavior is a testimony to the training we have done and the trust we have developed in the process❤️☺️.

Yet, despite the fact that they are really good patients that wait in position while are being handled I put their muzzles on today.

Why?

Because I am aware that dog bites are a real risk for vets and owners. I want our vet to be worry- free so she can do her work better and faster, which in turn reduces the stress of her patients (and mine!).

Because there is a possibility that B&E could feel discomfort or pain with some of the procedures. Dogs, like people, are more likely to be grumpy, or even bite when they are in pain, worried or stressed.

Because I want to contribute to existing initiatives dedicated to change negative perceptions about muzzled dogs.

Elena Catalán and Laura Gomez are Edarra and Bilbo's Spanish vets!

Elena was born in a nearby village and is an entrepreneur. Against the odds and negative social assumptions about rural life, she decided to invest in a mobile vet clinic. She now provides quality care to rural communities like mine.

Love learning about women entrepreneur, especially in the countryside. For the record, Bilbo loves Laura❤️☺️🤣.

A brief update.

I think Mr B has sore legs/paws. He had his first Librela injection in Spain on Monday but he is sore. He refuses to walk on the stoney paths and sits or lies down on the ground refusing to move. He also walks particularly slowly.

Yesterday I didn't take him for a walk in the evening and this morning we went for a short stroll around the centre of the village to avoid stones.

The steppe ground here is tough for Bilbo and Edarra's paws. It is full of sharp stones and spiky bushy plants. Their paws need time to acclimate and develop a more callous skin. I have been applying baseline regularly but I have been told by professionals that the ground is tough even for some local pet dogs (eg. Not working dogs).

On the positive side, and despite the possible pain, I think he is much more relaxed than ever before. He doesn't react to triggers so much and recovers quickly.

Photos for tax: E&B sun worshipping and resting while I am studying.

So, day 1 of Susan Garrett's Recallers.

This is a serious business for me. I would love to give Eda more freedom but I need to trust she will come back to me no matter what (dog, rabbit, horse, favourite person, brother).

Please make me accountable!
