Did you know that January is animal weight loss awareness month? With the start of a new year, it’s the perfect time to shed light on this important topic.
Here at Castle Vets we endeavour to provide a safe and empathetic consulting environment where we hope owners feel able to have positive and constructive discussions about weight management which are free from blame. Our Nurse Weight Clinics are designed to engage, educate and empower owners to tackle the issue of obesity and increased weight in their pets in a safe and sustainable way. Together we can work together to reduce the incidence of pet obesity. Please contact Launceston or Liskeard on 01566 772211/01579 208072 for further information and to book your Nurse Weight Clinic.
We hope you have a Happy Howl-O-Ween but please remember this time of year can be spooky for your pets too. Here are some helpful tips for keeping your dog safe and calm. 🎃🎃👻👻
Firework season is nearly upon us again and approximately two thirds of our pets are scared of fireworks. So how can you help your pet deal with this potentially scary time of year?
Here are Castle Vets top tips for keeping your animals safe and helping them to cope
o Walk dogs before it gets dark and make sure they are on a lead with a well-fitting harness or collar.
o Make sure collar tags and microchip details are up to date.
o Ensure all windows and doors are shut and close any curtains.
o Lock or block cat flaps to stop pets escaping.
o Switch on a television or radio to drown out some of the noise.
o Don’t leave your pets alone in the house if possible.
o Provide hiding places (such as a den, lined with used blankets or clothes).
o Provide activities that involve licking, chewing and sniffing (such as Licki Mat, snuffle mat, stuffed Kongs) which are all calming behaviours for dogs. Start using these before the fearful event so that your pet becomes familiar with them.
o Let your animals hide if they want to - don’t try and force them to go in or come out.
o Keep in mind that cats feel more comfortable in high resting places.
o Try not to react to the fireworks or show concern.
o Stroke and talk to your pets in a calm manner (if they are looking for interaction).
o Provide extra litter trays for cats.
o Never punish or get angry with your pet.
o Never take your pet to a firework display.
o If you have rabbits or guinea pigs either bring them indoors or cover hutches with a blanket but make sure there is sufficient ventilation. A cardboard box with holes in filled with hay placed in the hutch makes a great hiding place.
Please do not worry if your pet should need a vet on this bank holiday, or any time outside of our normal opening hours, just call us on 01566 772211. We always have our own vets on duty 24/7.
Meet the team Tuesday!
This is Katie our brilliant dispensary technician....
If you have a pet who is approaching adulthood (approximately 6 months of age) and you would like advice on things like diet, behaviour and neutering, then our nurses are here to help. Six-month health check clinics are carried out by our nursing team who can offer advice and answer any questions you may have. These clinics are also a great opportunity to carry out physical health checks as demonstrated by Jade and Beth in this video.

It's our lovely nurse Sophie's turn to tell you a bit about her.....
As microchipping for cats has now become a legal requirement in the UK we hope that this video will show you that the process is quick and no more painful than an injection. Microchipping is another service offered by our fantastic team of nurses 💚🐈🐈⬛💚
Meet the team Tuesday!
Here is our fantastic Nurse Jade telling you a bit about her and why she loves working at Castle Vets.
Our nurses offer a variety of clinics which provide a relaxed setting for open communication, where clients can discuss and ask questions that they may not always feel comfortable asking a vet. We are hoping to provide more nurse led services in the near future including physiotherapy as our lovely nurse Beth explains in this video.
