We’re delighted to announce that Louise Towl, Veterinary Physiotherapist, is offering her professional services every other Wednesday at Castle Vets Launceston. Louise will be bringing a wealth of experience and a compassionate approach to helping animals recover from injury, manage pain and move more comfortably.

Physiotherapy is an important part of modern veterinary care, focusing on improving mobility, comfort and quality of life for animals of all ages. It can play a key role in:

• Supporting recovery after surgery or injury, such as cruciate repairs or fractures.
• Managing chronic conditions like arthritis or hip dysplasia.
• Reducing pain and stiffness through gentle, tailored exercise and manual therapies.
• Improving performance and preventing injury in working and sporting dogs.
• Aiding older pets to stay active and comfortable for longer.

Louise offers manual treatments such as joint and soft tissue mobilisations, electrotherapy and exercise regimes, all tailored to meet the specific needs of each animal. She will be working closely with our veterinary team to ensure every patient receives a personalised treatment plan that compliments their medical care. Although dogs are the most likely small animals to require physiotherapy, cats and other pets may benefit too.

We’re thrilled to have Louise joining us and look forward to offering this valuable new service to our clients.

If you would like to find out more or book a physiotherapy appointment for your pet, please contact the Castle Vets team.

It's Fireworks Night - the Time of Year Many Pet Owners Dread!

Fireworks can be extremely frightening for pets - the loud bangs, bright flashes and unfamiliar smells can cause real anxiety. Fortunately, there are several ways you can help your pet feel more comfortable:

🐾Keep them indoors: Close windows, doors and curtains to muffle sounds and block flashing lights.

🎶Create background noise: Play calming music, white noise or TV to help disguise the sounds of fireworks. Did you know that Classic FM is once again teaming up with the RSPCA for two Pet Classics programmes packed with ‘the most soothing and comforting classical music’ on Wednesday 5th and Saturday 8th November, 5pm to 9pm on Classic FM and Global Player.

🏠Provide a safe space: Set up a cosy den with your pets favourite bedding and toys where they can retreat and feel protected.

🍖Offer comfort and distraction: Give treats or use puzzle feeders to help distract from the noise.

🪪Check identification: Make sure your pet's microchip and ID tags are up to date in case they become startled and escape.

If your pet finds fireworks especially stressful, please contact us. We can offer personalised advice and discuss options such as calming supplements, pheromone diffusers or prescribed medications to help make fireworks season easier for them 💚

🎃🐾Keep Your Pets Safe & Calm This Halloween!👻💚

Halloween can be fun for us - but a little spooky for our furry friends. Here are some quick tips to help keep them safe and stress-free tonight:

🕯️1. Keep sweets out of reach. Chocolate and artificial sweeteners (like xylitol) can be toxic to pets. Treat them to pet-safe snacks instead.

🚪2. Secure your home. With the door opening often for trick-or-treaters, make sure pets can't slip outside. A quiet room away from the front door can help them relax.

👻3. Watch the costumes. If your pet is happy to be dressed up for Halloween, make sure their costume fits comfortably, doesn't restrict movement or breathing and has no small pieces that could be chewed off.

💡4. Keep decorations pet-friendly. Glow sticks, candles and fake cobwebs can be dangerous if chewed or knocked over.

🔊5. Calm the noise. Play soft music or keep the TV on to drown out the doorbell and excited voices outside.

🐕‍🦺6. Walk your dog early. Take your pup out before the trick-or-treating starts. This avoids loud noises, costumes and crowds that could frighten them.

We hope everyone has a safe and pawsitively fun Halloween! 🎃🐶😺👻🧛‍♂️🦇⚰️

Why should I have my dog hip and elbow scored?

Many breeds of dog are at risk of developing joint abnormalities, the most common of which are hip and elbow dysplasia. These conditions mean that the hip and elbow joints do not form normally, which can cause issues such as joint pain and early onset arthritis as the dog ages. These conditions can be hereditary, however many dogs will not show symptoms until later in life, when they may have already had one or more litters.

To help reduce the instances of these conditions, the British Veterinary Association (BVA) and the Kennel Club (KC) set up the Hip and Elbow Scoring schemes. They advise that only dogs with an elbow score of 0, and a hip score below the breed average should be bred from (more information on the scoring and breed averages can be found on their websites).

How is the hip and elbow scoring done?

The x-rays are taken at our Launceston practice, and sent to the BVA to be assessed by a panel of experts. Your pet will be given a general anaesthetic, so that we can fully monitor and accurately position them, as the images needed are very specific. We will then send the x-rays for scoring, and contact you when we get the results.

How do I know if my dog is eligible?

For the BVA/KC scheme your dog must be at least 1 year old and have an up-to-date microchip. Your dog does not need to be Kennel Club registered to take part in the scheme, and it is important for both males and females to be screened.

What do I need to do on the day?

As the x-rays are taken under anaesthetic, your dog will need to stay at the practice for a couple of hours – this allows us to carry out a full pre-anaesthetic check over, and monitor them through their recovery. We will check your dog’s microchip details on admit, and if they are Kennel Club registered you’ll need to bring their certificate and any relevant transfer documents. We will also contact you ahead of your admit appointment to advise you on how best to prepare your dog for the anaesthetic.

How much does it cost?

At Castle Vets, we are dedicated to transparency regarding the cost of our services. Our BVA hip and elbow x-rays are a set price of £375 (inc. VAT), which includes the anaesthetic drugs and monitoring, taking the x-rays, and sending them to the BVA to be scored. There is a separate fee, payable directly to the BVA Canine Health Scheme, of £145.50, although this is not set by us and is subject to change.

How do I book my dog in for scoring?

Give the practice a call, and you’ll be put in touch with one of our nurses, who can answer any questions you have about the scheme and get you booked in. Currently we are only doing the scoring on specific days – see below for the next available dates.

🎆🐶Fireworks Season - Tips for Dog Owners

Fireworks may be fun for us, but they can be terrifying for our furry friends. Here are a few ways to help your dog stay calm and safe:

💚Create a cosy, quiet space inside for them to retreat to.
🎵Play soft music or white noise to drown out the bangs.
🏷Make sure their ID tags and microchip info are up to date - just in case.
🐕Stay calm yourself - your dog takes cues from you!

Today we say goodbye to our lovely nurse Jess, who joined Castle Vets as a Saturday nurse assistant at the age of 13 and is swapping wagging tails and meowing patients for sunshine, beaches and kangaroos in Australia!

Jess, you've been such an important part of the team - always calm, caring and ready with a laugh, even on the busiest of days. We'll miss your hard work, your dedication and of course, your sense of humour in the staff room.

We're all a little jealous, but mostly excited for the adventures ahead of you. Just don't forget us when you're sipping cocktails on the beach - or when a wombat needs nursing!

Thank you for everything, Jess. We'll miss you loads, and we wish you the most amazing time down under. Good luck, and safe travels! 😭😭
