Here at Castle Vets, we understand the importance of Dental hygiene within our pets. Poor Dental hygiene can lead to Dental disease which if left untreated can cause an overload of bacteria within the blood stream causing damage to internal organs such as the kidneys and heart.

To help with detecting dental disease as early as possible we offer complementary ‘mouth clean and screen’ checks with our nurses who can assess your pet’s teeth and create a dental care plan. If necessary, they will then book them in for a ‘Mouth Clean and Screen’, with our dedicated dental nurses Sophie and Olivia. They will admit your pet on the morning of their appointment, clean your pet’s teeth and take full mouth x-rays under General anaesthetic so we can then assess if you pet needs any teeth extracting. Sophie and Olivia can answer any questions you may have at the discharge appointment. Following this procedure, together they will create a dental care plan that suits you and your pet, as well as regular dental checks, to help maintain your pet’s new smile!

Check out the before and after photos below which show one of our patient’s teeth pre and post Mouth Clean and Screen. If you would like to book your pet in for a Mouth Clean and Screen check or for more information regarding this service, please give our reception team a call.

Last week our lovely Liskeard nurse Sarah did a talk at Duloe WI titled ‘Pet Dental Care Explained’. She discussed what happens as dental disease progresses, when we recommend dental procedures and why, what we do when your pet is under anaesthetic, and of course, how to avoid or delay the need for dental procedures with effective dental home care.

The pictures below show Sarah explaining the ‘Mouth Clean & Screen’ procedure and how we have no idea what problems are lurking below the gumline until we see the x-rays.

Happy National Hedgehog Day!! 🦔🦔🦔

Hedgehogs are regularly brought to the practice by members of the public and once they have received necessary treatment from us, they are then handed over to the care of Prickles & Paws Hedgehog Rescue. At Prickles & Paws the hedgehogs continue their rehabilitation until they are well enough to be released back to their natural habitat. Prickles & Paws recently shared data showing the top causes for admission in 2024. While accidents do happen, it is sad to see so many dog attacks, injury and entanglement cases. Prickles & Paws hope that by sharing this data and spreading awareness these types of admissions can be reduced. Head over to https://www.pricklesandpaws.org to learn more about this fantastic charity and everything they do to help our favourite prickly mammals.
