🐾 ENRICHMENT IDEAS 🐾

Christmas is expensive! We all know that. Canine enrichment doesn’t have to be. If you can’t present your loyal pooch with a snuffle mat or brand new toy this year FEAR NOT.

We encourage ALL enrichment, not just our snuffle mats.
Here’s some relatively free/inexpensive ideas for enrichment.

Perfect advice from a brilliant trainer.

Snuffle mats and calming exercises alike will help at this time of year. 💜🐾

With bonfire night just around the corner, and fireworks seeming to be more popular now than ever, I want to share with you my advice for helping your Spaniel or Spaniel mix prepare for the noise.

🐶 Go for a walk before it is dark, keep this walk calm so try hiding some treats in the grass for your dog to find. Let your dog sniff a lot. This produces calming hormones.

🐶 Make up a kong in advance or have a long lasting chew ready, again when they lick or chew they release serotonin (the feel good hormone).

🐶 Keep curtains/blinds closed to block out the flashes.

🐶 Make up a nice cosy bed in an area your dog likes going in. If using a crate consider putting blankets over it to insulate against sound.

🐶 If you're not sure how your dog will react it’s best to stay at home with them. There is a link between noise phobias and separation anxiety. And I see a lot of dogs who have been scared during fireworks and then suddenly are worried about being alone at night.

🐶 Calmly give your dog a treat every time they hear a firework. This will help give them a positive association.

One of our lovely clients sent in a video of their new puppy with their snuffle mat. 😍

What a little superstar he is, displaying the perfect, calm and happy behaviour whilst using the mat. We also received some lovely pictures of him sleeping straight after which means he’s got a brilliant amount of enrichment 🥰😴

Some of you may ask, what is a snuffle mat? What does it do? 🤔

Snuffle mats are a form of enrichment for your pet. Predominantly dogs use these but any animal with a sense of curiosity or adventure can use these.

WHAT they do: once an animal engages in a snuffle mat it will start to release serotonin and they will start to calm. This can take a few try’s so they can get over the excitement of having food just at the top of their nose. 10 minutes of enrichment is the same as a 30 minute walk so this is great way to get some energy out! . Engaging both their brain and nose this will tire them out. 😴

WHAT you can put in them: kibble/dried food and treats. They can easily have their breakfast/dinner in these or just some tasty treats. 🤩

HOW to use: Simply separate the high quality fleece and hide the treats/dried food in between the pieces of fabric. For first uses try not to make it too hard for your pet so they can enjoy it freely. You can make it harder as your pet gets used to it. Using a command such as ‘find it’ to engage in the mat. 🧐

ADVISORIES: If your pet has never used of these before please do not leave them unattended for the first few times, especially young pups. Once you see they are calm using it and not chewing it then you can leave the room/house at your discretion.
If your dog is a chewer or a teething puppy we do not recommend leaving unattended.
