Wouldn’t you be lonely if you lived all by yourself? Well … actually don’t answer that, it might be your dream to have a house to yourself! 😂 But anyway …… guinea pigs don’t like living alone, they actually NEED at least one companion (maybe more….!) because piggies can actually get so lonely that they get depressed, which can lead to health problems, like losing their appetite. So if you can make sure to get 2+ guinea pigs.

P.S. There is of course always an expectation to the rule … some piggies don’t like living with other piggies, I have never had one like that, my pigs have always wanted to be together, but it can happen.

A Guinea Pigs🐹 whiskers are primarily used to sense their surroundings, including their texture and the location of the food, they act as “feelers” to help them navigate and determine what they are eating, especially if it is something they can’t fully see. So taste buds do confirm the flavour, their whiskers also play a significant role in identifying potential food sources.

So ….. Not just something cute, it does its own little job! 🐹😂

So … Guinea Pig vs Hamster …

Size -
GP -Larger rodents with a potato like body, and with no tail.
H - Smaller, compact body, short legs, and a noticeable tail.

Social Behaviour -
GP - Highly social animals that thrive in the company of other guinea pigs. They prefer living in pairs or groups and can form strong bonds with their cage mates.
H - Generally solitary creatures and may display territorial behaviour if housed together.

Lifespan -
GP - Typically having a longer lifespan, living on average 5-7 years.
H - Usually ranges from 2-3 years.

Cage and Habitat -
GP - They require more spacious living quarters. Benefiting from larger cages with ample space for exercise, hiding spots, and toys.
H - Being smaller, they can thrive in smaller enclosures but still need room for activities such as running on a wheel and creating nests.

Well … I didn’t know either until I was doing some research! 🤣 they are ALL adorable but of course …. Some more than others 🥹

So …. There are 40 recognised breeds of guinea pig in the UK. Here is a little list of a couple of them…

P.S. I have only had 9 of those different types … but I would love an Alpaca guinea pig🦙🐷

Did you know? 🐹 Guinea pig mums form powerful bonds with their babies using scent and vocal cues! 💕 During the first 3 weeks, they provide essential care to ensure proper socialization and development.

Here’s how they bond:
1️⃣ Nursing & Cleaning: Mums nurse their pups and even stimulate them to urinate and p**p by cleaning their bottoms. (Not a job I’d sign up for! 🤣)
2️⃣ Early Socialization: Those first few weeks with mum and siblings are crucial for learning social behaviors and building connections.
3️⃣ Scent Recognition: Mums recognize their pups through scent, which is why handling them too early (before a week old) can risk rejection.
4️⃣ Vocal Communication: Pups make calls that trigger sweet responses from their mums. 🥰
