Fraggle's Paws

Fraggle's Paws Every dog deserves to live their best life ever filled with snuggles, adventures and fun walks.

My name is Nicola and, after 46yrs working in accounts including 18yrs teaching adults, I am now following my passion of working with dogs through my business "Fraggle's Paws" as a qualified dog trainer with IMDT (The Institute of Modern dog Trainers). All the uniquely individual dogs I have known, beginning with my grandfather's border terrier, Henry, through all the cuddly and feisty dogs of fam

ily and friends, to those I have been privileged to own, have inspired me to help others along their journey of dog ownership and, since 2017, I have accumulated over 400hrs volunteering with Dogs Trust Dog School. Fraggle's Paws is named after my first rescue dog - a quirky, worried boy who decided to choose me for his forever home and taught me so much, along with my first dog Tom, whom I was honoured to inherit from my late neighbours. Tom and Fraggle inspired me to undertake hours of learning in order to help them live their best lives with me, and that learning has not stopped, with my current two rescues teaching me new things every day. Fraggle's Paws services will include:

Basic Training Workshops (maximum 4 dogs) - Small group beginners and improvers classes - 1-2-1 Training - Solo Training Walks - Solo Dog Walks. Please follow this page or email me for more information; availability; dates; venues; and prices. I am fully insured and only use positive reward and concept based training methods so that you and your dog have the best possible experience to take forward in your lives together. Your Puppy or Dog will receive a Certificate of Attendance at the end of your course.

🚫CHRISTMAS TREE WARNING 🚫

🌲PINE NEEDLES🌲
Although needles from trees such as fir, pine, and spruce are thankfully non-toxic to dogs, they can get embedded in paws and cause mouth irritations. If too many needles are ingested then your dog may end up suffering a nasty stomach upset. With this in mind, think about opting for a fake tree or investing in a protective barricade to prevent your dog from being harmed.

⛄️ ARTIFICIAL SNOW ⛄️
Have you got a snow-covered artificial tree? Unfortunately, artificial snow can contain ingredients that could be toxic to pets and should really be avoided at all costs in favour of ones with snowless branches if you have a curious dog who likes to inspect the tree.

🍫 CHOCOLATE 🍫
You do need to be a bit more careful if you use chocolate decorations especially if you’ve got a pet that will try to sneak one, as dogs should never be allowed chocolate. It is advised to hang any edible decorations right up at the top of your tree, where even the most mischievous of pets can’t reach them.

🌿NATURAL DECORATIONS🌿
Pet owners should be aware that certain festive plants and natural decorations could be harmful to your pet. Be careful with certain festive plants – poinsettia, holly, mistletoe, and ivy can cause varying degrees of stomach upset if eaten by a curious dog.

🎁EDIBLE GIFTS🎁
It is wise to avoid leaving anything edible under your tree, even if it is wrapped. Dogs may rummage through the gifts looking for anything they can eat. Most commonly chocolate gifts which could prove fatal, but also any food gifts could be found by your dog and consumed, so be extra careful this year and keep them out of reach from your curious pets.

🎄SMASHED DECORATIONS🎄
As pretty as glass baubles may be, they can be very dangerous indeed for your dog if they end up smashing. Cuts to the mouth and paws could be very serious, while ingesting broken pieces could even result in lacerations to the throat or internal organs.

Something to take note of

KEEP YOUR DOGS WARM THIS WINTER

DOG COATS
Skinny and thin coated dogs can benefit from a warm jacket. Be careful of putting a coat on a fluffy dog though as it can actually stop their fur trapping heat by pushing out the air in their coat that works as natural insolation.

KEEP ACTIVE
Movement will generate body heat so keep your dog active when outside.

ROAD GRIT
Be aware of chemicals such as grit and salt on the roads as it can be an irritant to a dog’s paws and pads, and their noses too when they are sniffing. Ice and snow can also cause irritation.

PAW PROTECTION
There are some brilliant balms on the market to protect paws and pads from cold conditions. Sensitive dogs will benefit from dog-friendly booties to keep their pads protected in the cold weather.

SHORTER WALKS
If your dog is not used to the cold it is important to stick to shorter walks to start off with until they get used to it. Heading outside during the warmer part of the day (11am-3pm) is also a good place to start.

⚠️BE AWARE⚠️
Important signs of cold related illness to watch out for include shivering, whining, reluctance to move, holding paws up, seeking warmth, or acting disoriented. If you see any of these, head home immediately and warm up. If symptoms continue, please contact a vet for guidance.

With an unusually early fall of snow overnight (even in the city), remember that very young or old dogs, small dogs or those with fine fur, and those with medical conditions feel the cold so don't take them out for long. Rinse your dog's paws to remove any grit, dry them off and let them snuggle in their blankets.
Also if it is snowing off lead dogs can get easily disoriented.
If your dog loves the snow have fun and stay safe.

Want your dog to 'Leave it'?
We can help you, but what would you like them to do next?

When I dropped a glass bottle last week the contents amidst the smashed glass were almost irresistible but our leave it, combined with a send away, kept my dogs safe.
