Today I had the pleasure of looking after Morpeako the hamster and Tom and Jerry the Axolotyl.
I’ll tell you now-Axolotyl aren’t the finest of eaters! But boy are they quick! Temperature checked and perfect for them. And Morpeako dragged his veggie stick into the pipe work of his cage. 😅😅😅 animals do the strangest things and they fascinate me! 🥰

Proud to announce that Wags and Whiskers will be the sitters of two Axolotyl in October!

And here comes the “did you know” part…

Did you know that Axolotyl are carnivorous amphibians and live in the wild for 10-15 years!!

They are a critically endangered species. “As legend has it, the axolotl is the Aztec god of fire and lightning, Xolotl, which disguised himself as a salamander to avoid being sacrificed. But these Mexican amphibians are impressive enough on their own, with the ability to regenerate lost limbs and stay “young” throughout their lives. Though they keep their gills, adult axolotls also have functional lungs and can breathe through their skin. And as if being forever-babies didn’t make them cute enough, their mouths are upturned in a permanent Mona Lisa smile.”

And I’m also told that they “squeak”. Isn’t that right, Rebecca Long Harris?

After a long start to the week and feeling a bit under the weather, Wags and Whiskers are having a much needed rest tonight! But I’m still taking time to teach my girl how to be gentle with her cat.

If you take the time to guide your children and teach them about animal body language, they’ll learn how to be gentle with animals, when to carry on and when to take a step back.

Betty is quite clearly happy in this scenario (I mean it IS chin tickles!)

*Children should ALWAYS be supervised around animals, no matter how much you trust either party*

📣THIS IS A PSA 📣

Puppies bite. They bite a lot. They bite hard. Their teeth are sharp. You might bleed. It might seem relentless.

Scaring the pants off them by yelling, pinning, shoving or shouting will not only do precisely zero, it will potentially create a fearful adult dog.

Puppies bite more when;
They are tired
They are hungry
They are bored
They are overstimulated
They are teething

Read that again. They bite MORE when they are the above. They will also bite when they are absolutely fine. They are dogs not dolls.

Be compassionate not scary. They will grow out of it but only if you teach them a good alternative. Trade for toys. Use a pen or a crate. Teach calmness. Reward gentle interactions. Grit your own teeth and ride it out while reinforcing good stuff and proactively managing bad stuff.

Be proactive when you know biting happens like after some play, when excitement goes up, when they are overtired (7-9pm witching hour anyone?) and give them a good chew or help them settle, or channel that energy into some training.

It does get better basically. Don’t panic. Most puppy biting isn’t aggression. Be CONSISTENT and PROACTIVE and expect more than a few bites along the way.

Here at Wags and Whiskers, we love a “Did you know?” post. Usually a cute photo of one of my clients, but today is different.
Did you know that Victoria, founder of Wags and Whiskers is hard of hearing? For all you cyclists out there and all you dog walking lovelies, be courteous to each other! We have to share some of these routes. Dog walkers: please move over if you hear a cyclist approaching. You could avoid a serious accident between your dog and a bike. And cyclists, please make sure you make every effort to announce your approach and keep a wide berth if approaching from behind. As a hard of hearing person, who could be waking a hard of hearing dog (you never do know!) please let’s all respect each other and keep safe. Much love to all 🥰 🐶 🚴

Meet Morpeako! My newest client who I will be looking after in October! In case you can’t make it out, Morpeako is a hamster and is happily sleeping! Hamsters are nocturnal creatures (and that’s why he’s no longer in his owners bedroom!) meaning they are asleep during the day and awake at night! All you Pokémon fanatics will know where Morpeako got his name, and all you non-Pokémon fanatics will just have to Google it!

Meet Betty and Wilf. Since Betty moved in next door, Wilf has been her gentleman caller! Very respectfully waiting outside the door until Betty was old enough to be spayed and venture outside!
