What a crazy few weeks! And what crazy weather we have had everything from blazing hit sunshine to thunder lightning and torrential rain and everything in between!!
Been a real mix of things going on but did manage one day off to dress like a rainbow and wear glitter to see Mika!

Up and coming weeks I won't be booking any leg clipping or handing and bargy/tricky horses as I have hurt my back. I will try and do all those booked in.

I am thinking of some topics to wrote about. What would people like first.

• Social licence - what is it and how will it effect us all

•Equine insurance - avoiding common pitfalls and navigating the mine field that is Equine insurance

• Just because we can should we?- Could take several forms, but I have been thinking on the veterinary side if things

Or any other topics?

I feel this post is worth a re share.

I will often see a horse is struggling before the owner or another professional, but the earlier you address the issue, the easier it is to resolve.

**Ragwort**

It has been a bumper year by all accounts. However it is still toxic to you and your horse. Just because you have grass don't think that means your horse won't eat it. Especially at the early rosesette stage it can be easily eaten it is also more edible in hay where it is also harder to identify.

Best course of action is pull it up bag it put in take it to the tip (not in green waste as that is composted and the seeds will spread) or burn it. Spraying isn't good ecologically.

I know people will read this and think for wildlife (the cinnabar moth) you need ragwort, they do and will feed off other plants or have ragwort growing well away from any livestock and control it don't let it spread like wildfire.

When pulling ragwort use gloves it is toxic to humans through your skin.

Ragwort has an accumulative effect and over time causes liver disease this can often been seen by sun hypersensitivity (sunburn) yellowing of white areas/mucus membranes later symptoms might be head pressing, ataxia and weakness amongst others.

This has been a full on week. A little photo/video dump of some of this week's activities.
A week full of clipping, ridden sessions, loading and travelling, cross country, long reining and GW.

Saturday I joined with JP Equine Connection for a demo to demonstrate and promote good horsemanship and training Kelly Marks and Intelligent Horsemanship Jo Powell Ihrt

Most GW (and some ridden and long rein) sessions this week have involved bubbles and or flags. It is a good job my clients all embrace my off the wall sessions and see the benefit in not always being conventional in my approach.

This week looks to be the same only maybe just maybe a little more sunshine 🌞

A little late notice and I appreciate it is also out of my area. However for those that are around I am working with fellow trainer Jo Powell Ihrt on Saturday doing a demo organised by Jo and Rother Valley riding club. This demo is open to all if you want to book a ticket please follow the instructions on the poster.

We may we may well look at doing another demo more in the Lewes direction at somepoint for people would like one.

I am and always will be the voice for the horse.

Several times this last week (and before) things have come up where I know I am having to be the voice for the horse. Unfortunately this doesn’t always go down well. People want quick fixes, people don't want to hear their horse is struggling because they are mentally or physically not coping with what is being asked.

Then people will go and find someone else who will tell them what they want to hear and will ignore (or not even see) what the horse is trying to say or will rush the horse or bully their way through the problem.
This might work short term maybe medium term.

But when this happens at somepoint the problem will probably reoccur only bigger this time and the horse get called naughty, dangerous, quirky, spicy - I could go on.

I would far rather be that person that listened, maybe it will take longer, maybe it will never work because that horse can never be happy with what is being asked, but I would far rather be that person than the person who is known for ignoring, not seeing and or bullying to get results.

Want something to do with or without your horse this summer there are even horseless options so everyone can be involved.

The TREC GB Summer Olympic Challenge is now available to purchase from our shop!

https://trecgb.com/product/summer-olympic-challenge-2024/

The challenge starts on Friday 26th July 2024 and this year we are celebrating the Olympics, creating a set of challenges that will provide something for everyone to achieve. The challenges are designed so that everyone can take part, with or without a horse.

How does the TREC GB Olympic Challenge work?
Following our Olympic inspiration, we are using 5 TREC themes. Within each theme there are three levels you can achieve (Gold, Silver and Bronze) and there are three streams you can choose from – Ridden, Groundwork and ‘Horseless’.

To achieve your medal at the end of the Challenge, all you have to do is complete a minimum of the five tasks, one in each theme. Each task at a given level is worth a number of points. And you can ‘mix and match’ from the streams, so you can choose your own path to success. And if you can’t precisely manage the task as listed – be inventive with something similar!

More and more frequently, people want to sort the problem but not address the issue. If you don't address the issue, you will continue to go round in circles, and potentially, the behaviour will then escalate.
This failure to acknowledge and address the underlying issues is a big welfare issue facing our horses.

https://www.facebook.com/share/p/x416GygKoBkPMARz/

A while ago, I was sent a pony for schooling that had napping (not wanting to go forward) and contact issues.

Upon its arrival, I did a through check over of its body and quickly found wolf teeth present (which cause major contact issues) and a bony change in its knee. Because of its wolf teeth, schooling was pointless at this stage, but I also wanted to investigate the knee further before doing any more work with the pony.

When I asked the owner if I could have the pony flexioned and xrayed by a vet, she told me that the pony was only going to be a kids pony anyway, so the knee wasn’t a concern for her. Yet the pony was showing significant napping behaviours, a behaviour that only presents when a horse associates major discomfort with what is being asked of them. And I had a strong feeling that, like most poor behaviours, the issues for this pony were pain related.

Because I wasn’t prepared to work with a horse I didn’t think was structurally sound, I paid for x-rays myself and the findings weren’t good. The pony had several bone spurs in the knee and substantial arthritic changes. More than enough findings to suggest that ridden work was extremely uncomfortable for it and retirement was the kindest option at that stage.

Sadly, this is an issue I see frequently when working with horses with behavioural issues. Most commonly, an owners first ‘go to’ is to have the horse ‘trained’ through the issue, but most of the time the problems we deal with as riders and handlers are not a training issue, but rather a discomfort or pain issue. Sure, a dominant trainer can override the issues for a while, but it doesn’t actually fix them and it severely affects the welfare of the animal in the process.

Before a behavioural issue is addressed through training, the horse should be well evaluated by an expert; including having their teeth checked, feet rebalanced, tendons flexed, legs and spine xrayed, scoped for ulcers, eyes checked, blood tests, seen by a chiropractor or body worker, properly saddle fitted and bit changed and then an assessment of the rider should be made to see where mistakes might be happening in their training. Even if nothing is found in these checks, you cannot rule out deeper pain issues such as adhesions, tumours, muscle tears, reproductive issues, misalignments, digestive issues etc. which can be nearly impossible to find without an autopsy or highly specialised appointments.

At the end of the day, horses are extremely willing and forgiving animals, so if they keep expressing poor behaviour, it is just because the cause of that behaviour has not yet been diagnosed and fixed. We always try to live by the statement, ‘Find the solution, don’t punish the symptoms.’ All behaviour is a form of communication and it’s our job to figure out what our horses are trying to say.

I am now back from a rather full on 11 days. Everything now aches 😆 I need a holiday to recover.

I have had a few phone issues. As previously posted I broke my phone before going on my break, then yesterday broke the temporary phone 🙈 thankfully my phone had arrived back just hadn't switched them back over. I am now back on my normal phone just have no text/ WhatsApp messages tha were sent since July 1st.

While away it has given a small amount of time to reflect on what I am doing and how I can improve on things for both me and all of you. Some changes will be coming and slight shift in focus too. As a result I am not taking on new clipping or riding clients for the time being. I am slowly looking at decreasing clipping as much as I like doing physically it takes its toll and my focus needs to be elsewhere. For the forseabe I will be continuing with all current clients for clipping.

Summer has arrived (well for now!)
Keep an eye on your four legged friend.
Look at your facilities and do what is best for your horse and you. Some stables will be shady and cool others will be stuffy and hot, some fields will be breezy and shaded other hot and no shade
Flies are hideous both horse flies and the back flies.

A reason not to believe all that is on Facebook and the internet to do your research and look at ingredients.
I frequently get asked about supplements for many things. Many have little evidence to suggest they work, although that doesn't mean they won't do anything.

The fact this company created new accounts to leave reviews and on some groups it was almost a cult you had to feed is scary. I am sure some will say it made a difference and maybe it, did but given the ingredients, it is hard to see how. Although I have had people tell me it helps?? I would say there is absolutely better ones out there that have far better ingredients that are more likely to do something.

Last uni week next week the summer off from that. Will do a low down on the uni year in a later post.
Reminder I am away first two weeks of July.
I have a few people on my waiting list to get back, too.
I am not going to be booking any more clipping in at least until I get back. My back has been twinging it is fine, but I do need to be careful. I will still get to those booked in, but if any horse is tricky, I may have to decline doing them.
Last few weeks have been a bit full on I have even less pictures and video's as my phone memory is full so most things get deleted once taken and sent.
Had lots of lovely sessions on all kinds of things recently from loading, clipping, handling, ridden work and lots of long reining.

Ulcers! Not all ulcers are equal. Equine glandular gastic disease is common but lots of questions remain unanswered as to what it actually is, why it occurs, how to treat it and what do you need to do to stop it reoccurring.

This webinar looks to be really interesting and informative. For members it is free and non members it is only a small charge.

There is always that one horse who had the biggest influence on you and what you do. For me, it was Lucie she was 15.2 Tb type mare who was tricky in every sense of the word, and she wasn't known as Lucifer for nothing.
We did so much together, and she taught me so very much, setting me on the path to help others understand their horses better.
It was 15 years ago yesterday that she left this world, but her legacy lives on. 🌈🦄

I might be up to date on messages. If you are waiting for me to get back to you, please message me again.

Some sensible advice om feeding. Every horse is different. When people ask me for feeding advice first thing is to strip it right back get a balanced diet work from there. Some horses do well on Alfalfa some do not, some do well on mix others do not you get the picture.

If a horse is having an issue I will often say remove certain things see if it nakes a difference if the answer is no, then by all means, feed it. A little feed with molasses in that your horses eats getting the vits and mins is better than not getting the vits and mins. Would I feed a fees with molasses in to a potentially EMS that would eat a feed without it no, would I feed scoops of sugary feed to a potentially laminitic no.

NUTRIBALONEY

Nutrition seems to attract a lot of nonsense and it's one of my missions in life to increase awareness of nutrition truths, and expose the nutribaloney!

So here we go:

"You can't feed sugar beet; it's awful for horses
Alfalfa is bad
Soya is inflammatory
Molasses is sugar and should be avoided
Carrots are high in sugar and bad
Compound feeds are the devil's work
Straights are too high in starch and are bad
Linseed contains toxins - don't feed
Vitamin and mineral supplements are unnatural and horses don't need them
Protein makes your horse fizzy so keep it low
Protein is always too low for muscle-building; supplement it!
Salt is very bad - never add it to feed
Salt is very good - feed masses of it!
🥴🥴
Haylage is bad for horses - it's too acidic
Hay is full of spores and should not be fed
You should never soak hay for more than 1 hour
Straw is toxic for horses
Grass 'affects' horses badly and you need to dose your grazing horse with syringed minerals to compensate (if you dare to let them graze).
Short overgrazed grass is dangerous"

For goodness sake. What are you meant to feed?

I'm tired of reading all the guff about feeding horses.

Every single statement above is NUTRIBALONEY.

Rubbish. Guff.

Do not believe everything you read.

In fact, don't believe anything you read.... until you've digested it, thought about it, and considered carefully who wrote it and why.

Please share to help combat confusion, stress and... nutribaloney.
