I love mornings like this. It takes a good hour to go round smashing waters and putting out extra hay, but it's like wandering through Narnia with my best boy Dude dog and all these beautiful creatures 😍❤️

One space has become available. Due to the incredibly kind Autumn we are having and one owners sad decision, we have one or possibly two spaces for retirement livery.
If you've messaged before and been told we were full, please try again.
Full care at grass. Excellent old ridge and furrow pasture with high hedges and field shelters. Auto water. Horses are placed in appropriate fields or paddocks. We have large acreage for those who can handle the grass, and paddocks for those who need more restriction. We also have a lovely crew yard to get the more frail horses out of the storms and for rest where needed. Horses are paired with suitable friends, never left alone and usually kept within a small herd. Minimum twice daily checks. We deal with farrier vet dentists, etc (unless you want to) £280 pcm Hay charged only when we feed it. Very experienced team providing excellent daily care. We can manage most health issues. Vet and farrier on site regularly.
Drop us a message if you're considering retirement livery for your horse, and come along for a visit anytime 😊

We said goodbye to Sammy last week. Sammy was a firm favourite, loved by all for his beautiful, gentle nature , and his wicked sense of humour. He was a Welsh Cob who came to us 5 years ago, spending his days either in the herd field or with his pair bond partner Ollie. (Who he was very patient with!) Sometimes compared to Eeyore for being a steady chap with his head down most times, he had many fooled!! Sammy could spring into action at the drop of a hat, leaping bucking and farting across the field, sending his hooves whistling past my ears many a time. He knew exactly what he was doing! He would also quickly discover which fences weren't electric, and could sometimes be found eating apples from the tree on the wrong side of the fence, or leaning (pushing) over a post and rail with his face in a blackberry bush. In his hey day, Sammy was a treasured family horse who hunted, hacked, and competed, bringing much joy to his wonderful owners. He loved his ridden job and had great enthusiasm for jumping, up to 120cm!

Sammys age had brought several health issues, which we were able to manage. However, after a difficult winter last year, I spoke to his owners to discuss getting him well enough to enjoy one last summer in the herd field. Sammys owners were always so supportive of any care he needed, and so we made a plan to say goodbye, quietly on a good day with his friends in the herd field.

It is always our pleasure to care for these horses. In a strange way, it's our pleasure to say goodbye too, knowing they have had the best possible last year's with all the friends freedom and care they deserved. I wish every horse were so lucky.

Coming home to a big bunch of flowers from Sammys owners was a wonderful surprise. Sometimes, this can be a very tough job, and this token of appreciation and sympathy was very touching ❤️

We miss him madly, but the memories he left behind are treasured. It was his time x

It's that time of year again 😕
We've been busy planning for winter with fencing and tidying up. We've had one big hay delivery with another one due at the herd field next week. We've started feeding a little bit of hay in the now as with the weather changing, the grass has slowed down.
It's almost one year since storm Babet hit us and showed us the value of (dry) ridge and furrow!
Fortunately, today is a beautiful day and the horses can all enjoy the sunshine on their backs.

Medication! Lots of oldies need a little help with tablets, powders or potions. Some are easy to administer, some are not. We always ensure they get the daily dose, however it's suitable for that particular horse.
A lot of older horses benefit from daily bute to ease the aches and pains of arthritis. However we always find mobility improves within a herd environment, with constant low impact moment. Sometimes we can reduce the pain relief when we see this improvement.
Do you know what really bothers arthritic joints in horses living out? It's not the cold, we keep them well rugged. It's slippy ground. The constant scramble balance and slip on mud really takes a toll on old joints. We ensure our frail oldies get to live on good ground and have plenty of shelter to rest. 🥰

Average age of these boys = 30 years!
These are our 'special care' horses. They all have dental issues and a variety of other health challenges. They need the grass, which is fine as we have all the grass! Here they are, being very polite about eating feeds together at a safe distance. Will is the boss, Ollie is second in command, and Sammy just gives them plenty of space.
These lovely old boys are enjoying summer sharing a big field with plenty of trees and hedges for shade and shelter. Perfect retirement ❤️

We have one space available right now. If you've been thinking about retirement livery for your precious friend, drop us a message or call 07946 302959 for more info about what we can offer.

It's been a while since I've found the time to share some photos. During a dreadful winter of storms and constant rain, we were really glad of the ridge and furrow land. Where other horses were constantly standing in water, our oldies always had dry land on the ridges. The field shelters took a battering. The small shelter got flipped over a couple of times, but fortunately it was built so strong, we can flip it back with no damage. But our lovely new double shelter got thrown across the field by storm Henk on Boxing day and didn't fare so well. No horses were hurt, but the roof was smashed to bits. We now have a reassembled double field shelter waiting for a new roof and some seriously big ground anchors!
With the weather being so bad, we rushed along the building of the crew yard in January so we could bring in the more frail oldies during the storms. This has been a huge hit. The horses are so happy in the crew yard. It's a lovely big safe space with auto water and a cosy barn with a fluffy straw bed to rest and shelter from the weather. It's also got the original old manger running along the back wall which we love. Its a great place to feed hay so they can share nicely. We can split the crew yard down the middle to provide two yards for two bonded pairs too, and it's ideal for any rehab or recovery. Much better than box rest.
Finally Spring came along and with it, the grass went crazy as usual. We're now busy fencing some new post and rail and tidying the fields with spraying rolling and harrowing.
The meadow at the Rings farm site will be big paddocks soon, ideal for weight gain or saved for winter grazing. I took a walk through there yesterday before we strimmed a line to fence, and the variety of plants was fascinating. I have an app to tell me if I find anything toxic in the fields, but what I found was quite the opposite. Sorrel! I'd heard of Sorrel but I didn't know what it was. It's so pretty, and its safe for all of us to eat. Naturally I tried some... its not for me though 😆
Anyway, here's some photos of our updates.

Best of all, we've had three beautiful new lady residents arrive with us this Spring too 🤩 Lacey 🥰 Jazzy ❤️ and Sassy 😍

Bye for now
