I know we do retirement livery. I promise to post some lovely photos of the oldies loving their lives here very soon but.... I have to do the foal spam too πŸ˜€

I think he's found his name.
It's Bo.

Short for Turbo!

I never realised they develop so fast!
He's a complete live wire and bold as brass. He's just started short spells of turnout, and so far it's disastrous to my mental health.
Mum and Splodge are doing great. Turnout / su***de videos to follow.

Oh, my word! Look who arrived yesterday. Well done Bessie, and welcome to the world Splodge. (Fetus name - subject to an update) I knew he was a boy!!
Politely arriving just one day late at 7.03am yesterday. He's so adorable. I've never seen such fluffy ears.
I can't wait to bring you some paddock zoomies videos, but for now, he's confined to the crew yard. He's been vet checked, jabbed and he's full of colostrum so he's had a great start. Bessie is the best mum, she loves him so much. We knew she'd love to have a baby 😍

Dentist day with Sharon Cooper Eq Dental and Grace Hayler

I always think this is a testament to how much our horses trust us, and how patient they are. Sharon of course is very calm and kind with them and I'm always impressed with her ability to read the horses so well and get a good job done for them. They are often visibly more comfortable afterwards.

You would have to hold me down with a rugby team, knock me out cold or pump me full of ketamine before I would be as willing and patient as these horses!!

Oh my, what a glorious Spring we are having! Ok, so it's got a little colder now, and we could use a drop of rain, but you won't hear me complaining.
We have a very exciting event on the horizon πŸ€— We have lots of oldies here at L.E.R.C. in Haddington, some into their mid thirties, but up to now, we've not had any youngsters.
Well, that's about to change.
My own mare Bessie is about to have her first foal any day now!
It's super exciting. We are all watching for changes daily and waiting for 'Splodge' to arrive.
Naturally, of course, I will spam you all with baby photos when he arrives. (I'm convinced Splodge is a boy)
Fingers crossed all goes well for Bessie and her baby. 🀞

Did we get snow today?
No. The boys have been in the hedges again πŸ˜‚
Along with lots of field space and friends to share it with, our oldies have access to approx 3 kilometres of ancient hedgerows across our two sites.
They love the hedges. There's a good variety of tasty plants in the hedgerows, and at this time of year, they love to nibble the young leaf tips and the flowers.
They will mostly do giraffe impressions, but I've seen one of our smaller old ponies stand on her back legs to reach the tasty tips!

They do keep me entertained πŸ˜†

Spring is here! March came in like a lamb and drenched our oldies with lovely warm sunshine on their backs.
We've got them all naked now, to roll out all their winter woolly coats for the birds to collect and line all the hundreds of nests they build in our ancient old hedgerows.
We'll soon be harrowing the fields and tidying up after the winter weather, ready for the usual crazy grass growth. The land our residents graze is approx 24 acres of very old ridge and furrow meadow. We don't apply any fertiliser, and the horses are able to graze a huge natural variety of plants and grasses, providing natural nutritional support.
We will be weaning them off hay during March. Though we keep the more frail horses on extra feeds until the grazing is abundant enough to support them without additional help.

We have some new faces in the herd field, with addition of Snippy, Chester and Reuben (who joined the herd field after a few weeks at the yard)

We are looking forward to three more new residents joining us at the end of this month!

We are currently full to capacity. I've had to turn away so many horses recently, and it really breaks my heart to do that. I want every horse to live a life like this, but we have to look after the land to provide it. We are now actively looking for more grassland nearby, which will enable us to look after more retired horses and ponies and provide owners with an answer for the future care of their treasured old friends.
If you know of any landowners with grassland who can help, please let them know we are on the lookout. Must be within a ten minute drive of Haddington. The horses are grazing animals only.
We'd love to be able to help more horses enjoy the peaceful and happy final years they deserve ❀️

One space has become available. Due to the incredibly kind Autumn we are having and one owners sad decision, we have one or possibly two spaces for retirement livery.
If you've messaged before and been told we were full, please try again.
Full care at grass. Excellent old ridge and furrow pasture with high hedges and field shelters. Auto water. Horses are placed in appropriate fields or paddocks. We have large acreage for those who can handle the grass, and paddocks for those who need more restriction. We also have a lovely crew yard to get the more frail horses out of the storms and for rest where needed. Horses are paired with suitable friends, never left alone and usually kept within a small herd. Minimum twice daily checks. We deal with farrier vet dentists, etc (unless you want to) Β£280 pcm Hay charged only when we feed it. Very experienced team providing excellent daily care. We can manage most health issues. Vet and farrier on site regularly.
Drop us a message if you're considering retirement livery for your horse, and come along for a visit anytime 😊

We said goodbye to Sammy last week. Sammy was a firm favourite, loved by all for his beautiful, gentle nature , and his wicked sense of humour. He was a Welsh Cob who came to us 5 years ago, spending his days either in the herd field or with his pair bond partner Ollie. (Who he was very patient with!) Sometimes compared to Eeyore for being a steady chap with his head down most times, he had many fooled!! Sammy could spring into action at the drop of a hat, leaping bucking and farting across the field, sending his hooves whistling past my ears many a time. He knew exactly what he was doing! He would also quickly discover which fences weren't electric, and could sometimes be found eating apples from the tree on the wrong side of the fence, or leaning (pushing) over a post and rail with his face in a blackberry bush. In his hey day, Sammy was a treasured family horse who hunted, hacked, and competed, bringing much joy to his wonderful owners. He loved his ridden job and had great enthusiasm for jumping, up to 120cm!

Sammys age had brought several health issues, which we were able to manage. However, after a difficult winter last year, I spoke to his owners to discuss getting him well enough to enjoy one last summer in the herd field. Sammys owners were always so supportive of any care he needed, and so we made a plan to say goodbye, quietly on a good day with his friends in the herd field.

It is always our pleasure to care for these horses. In a strange way, it's our pleasure to say goodbye too, knowing they have had the best possible last year's with all the friends freedom and care they deserved. I wish every horse were so lucky.

Coming home to a big bunch of flowers from Sammys owners was a wonderful surprise. Sometimes, this can be a very tough job, and this token of appreciation and sympathy was very touching ❀️

We miss him madly, but the memories he left behind are treasured. It was his time x

It's that time of year again πŸ˜•
We've been busy planning for winter with fencing and tidying up. We've had one big hay delivery with another one due at the herd field next week. We've started feeding a little bit of hay in the now as with the weather changing, the grass has slowed down.
It's almost one year since storm Babet hit us and showed us the value of (dry) ridge and furrow!
Fortunately, today is a beautiful day and the horses can all enjoy the sunshine on their backs.
