Life might not be what you thought it would be like with your dog. They might be reactive, they may find busy places difficult, they might have physical issues that mean you can’t do all the things you imagined doing together before you got a dog.

Changing your expectations doesn’t mean you can’t have a full and fun life together. Don’t get stuck in fixed ideas of ‘all dogs should enjoy x’ or ‘all dogs should be able to cope with x’ etc as they are all individuals and have different preferences and different abilities to cope in certain situations. If your dog doesn’t fit into what you expected, or can’t do some of the things you thought you’d do with them, then sometimes you might have to think of different ways to enjoy sharing time together.

You might have a dog who adores scent work, a Hooper’s star, a dog who loves wild swimming with you, a dog who loves visiting family and friends, a dog who plays perfectly with your children and joins them for tea parties, the ideal allotment dog who rotovates your soil for you and keeps you company. Dogs are such complex emotional beings and we do them a disservice by assuming they all just want to do the same thing and berating ourselves when they can’t cope with certain things for whatever reason. Enjoy the stuff you can do together and don’t waste too much time worrying about the stuff you can’t.

As most of you know, my yorkie Twig is physically limited as she was born with problems with her hind limbs (we thought she may never walk when she came to me to foster) but she’s amazed us all and after a huge amount of physio and vet help, she walks and runs (actually mostly runs!). She’s an adult now and loves her walks but can’t walk huge distances but she absolutely loves being active and going places. She loves going peoply places (cafes/garden centres/pubs etc) and she loves doing stuff- her physical issues don’t ever stop her having a full life. We kayak loads as a family and Twig came with us too- she seemed to really like it so it’s another thing she can do as enrichment that isn’t just a walk. She squeezes every bit of joy out of each day and has a full life but it’s never going to be a life of walks busy with offlead dogs (as she’s physically vulnerable) and really long country walks (as she can’t walk too far). I’ve had to accept that and find the fun in other ways (and I’m quite liking it too). My life is a lot fuller for having her in it even if she can’t do some of the ‘normal’ dog stuff ❤️

It's really important to microchip your dog and keep the details upto date. Apart from being the law having seen so many dogs coming in to Maxi's mates with incorrect details and not being able reunite them it's heart breaking.
