๐ŸŒŸDonโ€™t forget to apply before the 30th June!๐ŸŒŸ

โœจAre you employed by an equine or mixed practice?
You need to be working in an equine or mixed practice and your practice needs to be either a registered Training Practice or willing to become one.

โœจDo you have the relevant qualifications?
In order to apply, you must have a grade C/4 or above in five GCSE subjects. This must include Maths, Science and English. If you do not possess all of these qualifications, your application will not be processed. However, you can re-sit these exams, and some equivalences will be accepted. If you are interested in finding out more regarding your options, please feel free to contact us and we will be happy to help.

โœจIs your practice willing to support you in starting the qualification?
Ensure that your practice can provide the required level of support in the form of a clinical assessor. The clinical assessor must be able to support you throughout the qualification and must be someone with whom you work closely. The assessor will need to do a weekly tutorial with you and support and guide you through the practical aspects of learning. The clinical assessor must be a qualified vet or veterinary nurse and have an up to date CPD record and either a clinical coach training or assessor qualification.

Our nursing school comes fully equipped with practical spaces to refine essential skills, such as drawing blood, administering medication and bandaging. Recently our first-year students have been practicing their bandaging skills. Morris, the model horse, is a great patient and stands still whilst he has a carpal bandage applied! Student Veterinary Nurses are encouraged to practice their skills in real life practice during their working week, whilst supervised by an RVN.

WHAT DOES AN REVN DO?

RCVS registered equine veterinary nurses (REVN) are an important part of the veterinary team in many equine veterinary practices and hospitals. REVNโ€™s provide expert care and treatment for sick and injured horses, ponies and donkeys. They are responsible for confidently handling, feeding, grooming, hand walking, and monitoring inpatients in hospitals. They can also prepare and assist with surgery, monitor anaesthesia, and perform minor procedures such as suturing wounds.

Thinking of becoming an equine veterinary nurse?

Equine nurses are an essential part of the team in equine veterinary hospitals and practices.

The nursesโ€™ roles and responsibilities are diverse and varied.

Nurses are responsible for the day-to-day care and monitoring of the inpatients. They assist the veterinary surgeons with a range of procedures including diagnostic imaging (eg scintigraphy, radiology, magnetic resonance imaging). Preparation of horses for surgery and other veterinary procedures (eg diagnostic analgesia or ultrasound scanning ) is important to ensure that the horse is clean and ready.

Nurses have an important role to play in theatre โ€“ their role includes preparation, packing and sterilizing of surgical kits, cleaning and ensuring strict biosecurity in the operating theatre and assisting the vets in positioning horses on the table. Nurses will frequently be called upon to scrub in to assist the surgeon.

Cleanliness and biosecurity is essential in a veterinary hospital and nurses play an essential role in ensuring that all areas are kept clean and tidy.

Being an equine veterinary nurse is a challenging job that includes long and unsociable working hours. The job is very varied and working with animals , helping to nurse a sick or injured horse back to health and working as part of a large team can be very rewarding.

Good veterinary nurses are passionate, hard-working and dedicated to horses. Communication and working as part of a team are key skills to have as well as having the confidence to work independently with sometimes little supervision.
