Accidents can happen at any time of the day but, although many think that it's safer to let cats out at night when it's quieter, statistically this is the most dangerous time for cats to be outside. In addition to the many other dangers after hours can bring, car headlights are very confusing for cats. For all their strengths, cats are poor at measuring distance and speed, and may make a dash for safety once the headlights have passed, only to run into (or under) the rest of the vehicle. Cats' eyes also do not adjust to light as quickly as ours do, which means sudden bright lights can dazzle them and make them disorientated. Ideally, if you have outdoor roamers, when you go to bed your cats should do too. I’m taking orders now £10.00 per calendar and this allows me to donate a good portion to a cat charity (I’ve ticked you off if you’ve already said you’d like to order).

Owners have agreed to the pictures that are in the calendar, I had a lot of fun making it but my goodness it was hard trying to decide who to use (it was pretty much a lucky dip if only there were more than 12 months in a year 😹)

Today is World Alzheimer's Day. Did you know cats can suffer too? Dementia in cats looks very similar to that of human Alzheimer’s as there is a similar effect of the brain. The feline brain starts to decline at around 10-15 years of age, so owners might begin to notice the cat dementia signs in their senior cats around this age.
The brain changes associated with dementia in cats are not reversible, and there is no treatment sadly. However, there are plenty of ways to help manage some of the symptoms associated with it, even slow it down. Always speak to your vet who will suggest the best course of action, but there are things you can do to make life more comfortable for your cat at home too. Here are some of the things you can do to help a cat with dementia:
1. Avoid changes to their environment
2. Use nightlights for regulated sleep cycles
3. Use ramps and stairs to help with disorientation
5. Understand that accidents will happen
6. Ask your vet about supplementing with Omega-3, vitamin B12 and antioxidants such as vitamin E to their diet as these can support a healthy brain.
7. Make litter trays easy accessible - make them bigger and more shallow
8. Stick to a daily routine, such as feeding at similar times each day.
9. Make more resting spots for them

We love this that a lovely supporter created for us 😸
CPR should only be done on a cat who's heart has stopped beating and they are not breathing. The aim of CPR is to provide physical compression of the chest, along with ventilation of the lungs, to restart the heart, and stimulate sufficient blood flow and oxygen to the brain and other vital organs. The idea is to keep the patient alive until more advanced medical treatment can be given. Sadly, even in humans, the success rate of CPR is low but it is always worth a shot when faced with life or death. Beyond CPR, check out our website and blog on how to give a cat first aid. We explain how to helps cats, not just by giving CPR, but how to deal with shock, seizures, fractures and broken limbs, as well as internal and external bleeding. We'll be breaking these issues down in future posts too, so do keep an eye out.

With my hayfever giving me a hard time just now, I wondered can our cats get hayfever as well? Yes they can 🙀

🤧☀️ The warmer weather brings with it a variety of pollens where human hayfever sufferers may experience some frustrating symptoms! Did you know that our feline friends can get hayfever too? 🙀 Hayfever is difficult to diagnose in cats, as they experience very different symptoms to us. Find out what to look out for: http://bit.ly/CatsHayfeverFB

On this day 6 years ago.

Her flowers will be out, along with her message. If reading it makes one person do the right thing, it is worth it.

As a team, we remain committed to recovering cats from the road, scanning, reuniting and giving families that much needed closure.
Cats deserve dignity and we will not leave them out there.

Cats are not yet included in the Road Traffic Act 1988 but we continue to campaign with our good friends at CatsMatter

So what should you do if you hit a cat....

Firstly stop if safe to do so.

Take the cat to the vets. Many cats are still alive and die alone at the side of the road, remaining there injured for hours until helped or are hit again.
Vets take an oath, similar to doctors, whereby they will administer emergency first aid to an injured animal. From our experience, if you take an injured animal into any vets they will help. There is no cost to you. If the cat has passed away, the vets will scan for a chip and keep safe to attempt to locate the family.

Picking up a deceased or injured cat is easiest done by placing a towel or blanket over the top and wrapping round. It makes it easier to lift.

If you are unable to do this, please post or message us.
Post on your local community group, lost and found cat group, message or contact a rescue ...do not leave them out there!! Someone will know who to tag to get help.

Do not put the cat in bushes, bury, cremate or put out with the rubbish. All of these have sadly happened in Colchester.
Many cats are microchipped and even if they are not, their families may well be searching for them.

Extensive research in simulated scenarios shows you know if you hit a cat unless you are driving a HGV or PSV.

Time and time again we post this.
We used to say...maybe they were scared or didn't know what to do...sadly now that is not our view.
Cats are family members. They are living beings who deserve dignity in death as in life.

We know tragic accidents happen. We deal with this daily. We have seen how distraught the drivers are who stop.

Even if it unsafe to stop because you are on a busy A road for example, please let someone know who can help. We work extensively with our local Police to recover if unsafe without help.

We admin a very busy lost and found cat site also and to see our members constantly posting ...month after month...year after year is heart breaking.
Families need closure happy or sad.

Will families be angry?? Is that why drivers don't stop??
From personal experience, no, we won't be.
My own Narla was found at the side of the road alive with a broken back.
The driver didn't stop and left her there.
I will never forget the noise she was making and she had been there for hours because the vets had to warm her up whilst attempting to save her.
I just wish I could of ended her suffering sooner and stop the pain.

So we ask you to share this post......

We ask you never to put yourself or others at risk.
We ask you to stop and help if you hit a cat.
We ask you to take action and inform.
We ask you not to conceal the cat.
We ask you to respect the roads and remember not everyone living there is human.

We ask you to do the right thing.....

They are never just a cat......and we will never leave them out there…….
