Kirsty's Dog Grooming is 7 years old today! π₯³πΎ
How on earth did that happen?!
In that time I've had the privilege of grooming hundreds of special doggies, met loads of wonderful people, survived a pandemic and worked at multiple premises before landing in the fabulous salon we're in now.
Thank you to everyone who has helped make it such a success π
Here's to many more π₯

Food games
How is everyone keeping their dogs amused at home? Yesterday I set up this treat finding obstacle course. I used various items from around the house and hid bits of food under, in and around all the bits and pieces laid out. This is great for mental stimulation as they have to explore all the objects and use their nose to sniff out the goodies! If you're unsure where to start then try raiding your recycling. Add cardboard boxes, try filling things with shredded paper and hiding treats inside. Give them cardboard to shred in the process. My 2 were straight in there but don't be afraid to help your dog.
This can be made even more fun if you do it in the garden :)
Paw/Pad trimming
This has certainly been the most challenging video so far! π€£
As ever you'll want to get the treats flowing. If possible I'd advise going for something they can lick as this may give a better chance of them staying still!
For eg.
Peanut butter (no xylatol)
Cream cheese
Pate
Either someone could hold a pate/primula tube for them or you could use a licki mat or alternative (think baking tray etc).
If you've been putting your dog on a high surface you can do that, or someone could hold the dog in a stand while feeding. Otherwise I'd try getting them when they are lying down and relaxed.
As always, safety comes first! Go lightly, don't risk cutting right against the pad. Have a good but gentle grip on the foot so you'll know if they're going to pull away or kick out.
Any questions? Let me know.
Oh, and apologies for the close up of my face! ππΎ
Eye trimming
Ok here goes! Again quite a quick video (must dig out my wee camcorder!) But hope it helps with the basics.
It can be really helpful to put your dog on a table, counter top etc when grooming. Always cover with a towel or blanket so they aren't slipping around and do make sure they can't fall off. Often they associate a higher surface with grooming which can encourage them to stand/sit still (ish). I would demonstrate with Lochie to give you a laugh but I'd never reach him π
Please do everything in stages as this will be new for them. If using a particular surface then get them use to this a few times with plenty of treats before introducing grooming tools.
Always let them sniff any tools you're going to use! Again building a positive association with food.
Then get them used to the handling before attempting to cut any hair. Little frequent sessions are much better than trying to get everything done in a oner.
If you have some one else to help them try having them hold the treat and ask the dog to wait while you snip one bit, then treat and repeat.
Most importantly please stay safe! If it's going to be too dangerous just leave it. They will cope.
Any questions or if you'd like a close up of any specifics just let me know πΎ
Brushing the curly coated dog
*please note I forgot to mention the neck area and base of tail. Remember to be thorough when combing where the collar sits and rubs the coat. Also the lower back/base of the tail tends to be quite thick so pay good attention to that bit*
Ok this is my first attempt at a video so bare with me! There are many things I couldn't cover as my time was running out and poor Lochie was restless pre walk (needed him dry for the video!)
If you are able to put your dog on a high surface like a table or counter top (cover with a towel) you will probably find they stand better for brushing.
This does not cover the tail so please remind me to do that separately. Also anything you'd like to see more of or areas you want covered/explained please just ask.
I will try to work out technology better and have a better set up next time π
I will also try a separate video on ways to distract your dog while you brush.
