A few folk have asked how Rhea is. Luckily we finally got an answer yesterday… a grass seed! A teenie tiny grass seed! It didn’t present itself like one and given the size her first ultrasound didn’t pick it up(wriggling spaniel) over the past 3 weeks Rhea’s vet treatment has came to roughly 4k. We didn’t plan to spend Christmas & new year in and out the vet and worrying what was growing on her neck. Insurance has been a godsend and all of her costs covered.

Should I get pet insurance?

I often get asked about who to use and if my dogs are insured. The simplest answer is yes they are. And the reason I don’t opt to put money away each month, is well you have no idea how much it’s going to cost you in vet bills and I can tell you now they aren’t cheap.

Over my Christmas break Rhea has been in and out the vet… legit since the day I finished work for the holidays. With her first to a trip to out of hours at 11pm at night… there was £400 right away, not even 12hr later a further £250…. Her current bill is £1,200 and growing.

We still are on the investigation on what is/has caused her huge lump on her neck (it’s looking much better here) which is a referral to the specialist which I don’t even want to think about that bill this week.

So here’s my tips for insurance as I’ve had to use it a fair few times over the years and is worth the money I pay personally.

Price per condition:
For me I go for the max an insurer will offer. Mine is 16k. Seems excessive right? But do you know how much broken legs can cost?

Cover:
Ideally I look for the full package, which includes dental broken teeth cost a fortune 😮‍💨 always read what each policy covers so you don’t get stung.

To me insurance is worth its weight in gold. However I was shocked that vets demand payment upfront and push for the likes of Klarna or loans to pay your bill if you can’t find the money. I won’t sit and vet bash, I’ve been with my vets for nearly 11 years and they have always been top notch with their service. They explained why they only direct claimed with two insurers.

But for someone who doesn’t have say £500 just sitting freely ultimately this is where it becomes… can I afford to keep the dog alive.

It’s always worth checking if your vets direct claim with your insurer or any you change too.

It’s no secret vet prices have went up, and sadly I feel insurance doesn’t match that at times. But it’s always worth having as you never know what life is going to throw your way
