Congratulations Sophie and Kate!
Thank you for rescuing so many hamsters, for educating so many on hamster welfare and for helping other people rescue hamsters too.

Hey hamster hoomans, did you know that the owners of our rescue, Sophie and Kate, are getting married in just 1 week?!

On Sunday 28th May 2023, the HHUK management team will be celebrating at the wedding so communications will be completely paused for the entire day.

From 22 - 31 May, please be patient while waiting for a response, particularly from the North East, as this is where Sophie and Kate cover.

If your request is urgent, please ask for Shelaine, Jess or Sarah during this time. Please allow for extra time on the Saturday and Monday while communications will be much slower due to the team travelling for the wedding.

Thank you for your understanding and patience.

Rest in Play Ruby-Roo. You were the best rescue ambassador. We thank you for your two years of service.

Hey hamster hoomans, we know that it can be very difficult to know what to do when your hamster gets ill, seems underweight, dehydrated or has skin issues.

We will always advise seeing an exotic veterinarian if you're concerned about your hamster's health or welfare. However, there are a few things you can use while waiting for your vet appointment that can really help!

Here's our Hamster First Aid Kit! Contents:
- Glass beaker; for confirming your hamster's s*x and health checking especially with unhandleable hammies
- Scales; you should be weighing your hamster every 7-14 days to ensure that they are not drastically gaining or losing weight.
- Syringes; handy for if you need to feed your hamster water urgently, and as a backup if you get medication prescribed by a vet.
- Nail clippers; hamsters nails can be worn down using wood, terracotta and cork in their enclosures, however many will grow too fast or you may rescue a hamster with overgrown nails. Small nail scissors can also be used.
- Baby food; great as a general snack, but can be brilliant if a hamster cannot eat solid foods or needs to gain weight.
- Ivermectin Xeno mini 50 spot-on treatment; hamsters can get mites, fleas or other parasites. If you suspect your hamster has a skin parasite, you should take them to the vets to receive an accurate diagnosis and dosage. However, having the treatment in your home is advised, as it will save money and small amounts can be used preventatively if you rescue a hamster.
- Cotton pads; good for cleaning sticky eyes, or cuts.
- Critical care; great for helping your hamster stay hydrated and gain weight. Should be given as a supplement alongside their food.
- Ketone test strips; hamsters can get diabetes (particularly dwarves), and ketone levels can be a good indication for a vet as to whether diabetes is likely. Dipping a strip into your hamster's urine can help you to determine whether your hamster needs to see a vet for further investigation.
- Heating pad; great to place outside your hamster's enclosure to keep them warm in winter.
- Cooling pad; great to place outside your hamster's enclosure to keep them cool in summer.
- Diatomaceous earth; this can be sprinkled into your hamster's sand or soil and mixed in to prevent the occurrence of mites, fleas and other parasites. Can also deter non-harmful insects, including spiders from their enclosure.
- Towel gloves; great for handling your hamster for health checks, feeding medicine or other reasons where they have the potential to bite.
- Pet carrier; important for transporting your hamster to the vets.
- Cornstarch; for stopping bleeding in cuts.
- Cotton buds; for cleaning dwarf scent glands, ears, eyes and cuts.

Again, please see a vet with any health concerns, but having these handy can help you feel comfort in knowing you may be able to help kepe your hamster comfortable while waiting for your vet appointment.

Welcome to the rescue, Woody!
He's such a chonk 😭 and a total Rubidium lookalike!

We're letting him settle in for a bit before moving him into a bigger home and switching to a h**p substrate.

Sad news 😓
One of our recent rescues Peach 🍑 has crossed the rainbow bridge.
She's a beautiful satin Syrian who was very sweet and would eat out of our hands, and we were working on getting her more comfortable and confident with being held.
It's always so heartbreaking when they go without warning.

She liked pear and mealworms and didn't like apple. We'll miss you, little pink girl

Cotton bedding and Kapok bedding (like Rosewood's Soft n Safe) is most definitely not safe for hamsters!

Stick to unbleached and dust-free bedding like paper, teabag, h**p and hay

Yes! Unfortunately, "large" cages sold in pet stores such as Pets at Home are woefully inadequate, most being half the recommended size.

We've seen a worrying rise in small and unsuitable cages sold in pet shops. ⚠️ This photo from our Hertfordshire rehoming centre shows the minimum cage requirements vs what was sold in a pet shop.

Titch is ready for adoption!

I forgot to finish saying why she had a shakey start-
She was tiny up until a month and a bit after we got her, where literally overnight she had the biggest growth spurt I've ever seen. At one point, she was bigger than Pebble and Willow - we were SO proud 👏
