"I wanted to do this class forever growing up," says Ireland's Fred Scala, who zoomed his way to the win in the Ashby Underwriting Eventers Challenge with the diminutive 15.2hh Corriebeg Supernova. "This class was always a highlight on the telly, so it's just been a dream. I got the opportunity to come here, and I had a little horse that I knew could be fast and careful, and if there was a class that she was going to be good at, it would have been this one."

Fred blocked last year's winner Gemma Stevens, who ultimately finished second with her defending champion Flash Cooley and third with her former five-star mount Santiago Bay, from taking the title yet again – but the tough track certainly made him work for it.

"There was a lot of questions that she'd never had to answer before, particularly the bank so two before I went, I started to get a little nervous about it – so I actually had to ask Gemma whether or not she had gone off the steep one and still been in the lead. I thought she'd gone long. She said she jumped off the steep one, so that was that," he laughs.
