Our Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons Practice Standards visit is next week! Veterinary practices have the option to gain accreditation from the RCVS that proves their clinical work and processes meet a required standard. We are hopeful we will gain the highest level possible for a general practice premises. The team have been working very hard behind the scenes to prepare for the visit, and show that Whisker & Woof deserves to gain accreditation. Here we can see Laura and Jodie collaborating together on a protocol to make sure our in-house laboratory is as accurate and efficient as possible. Well done Team! 🤓🧪👏🏻

I’m at the London Vet Show for two days this week, an annual CPD event for the veterinary profession held at ExCel, London. It’s an absolutely fantastic opportunity to learn the latest clinical updates and developments during lectures, to meet the exhibitors showcasing new and exciting equipment, and to catch-up with friends and colleagues past and present. At Whisker & Woof we are constantly innovating and growing, making sure that your pet is receiving the very best care. The practice is open as usual, and the team are ready to help. Mark is your clinician today, a highly experienced vet with three RCVS Certificates in Medicine, Cardiology and Surgery and a Fellowship of the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons. You simply won’t find a more capable vet out there. On a personal level, I can’t help but look at my delegate badge that says “Practice Owner, Whisker & Woof” and be filled with an overwhelming sense of pride and achievement. In many ways, when I read that, it feels like the end of something, but really it’s just the beginning ☺️😀

Welcome Jodie! Jodie is our fabulous new Head Veterinary Nurse here at Whisker & Woof! She brings almost a decade of experience, and a Certificate in Emergency & Critical Care to our incredible team. Jodie has a great work ethic, and holds herself to the highest of standards both clinically and professionally. We asked her “What made you decide to join Whisker & Woof?” and she said, “It was the practice values, clinical standards, the amazing facilities, and the calm and positive energy that radiates around the clinic”. 😀👏🏻🤙🏼Here you can see Jodie looking after Harry while he recovers from his procedure. Dry Eye, a failure of adequate tear production, is way more common than we think. Sometimes, it is a reduction in the amount of tears, other times the quality of the tear film is affected. Immune destruction of the tear gland is the most common cause, and symptoms include recurrent conjunctivitis or corneal ulceration which is painful and debilitating. The diagnosis is made using special paper strips that record tear flow from the lower conjunctival sac over a period of 60 seconds. Tear quality is assessed using a fluorescein break-up test (the orange/green dye seen in the photo. This condition almost exclusively affects dogs, although cats can be affected too. If your dog has symptoms as above, ask your vet to consider dry eye as a possible cause. Handsome Saul in the photo has recently been diagnosed with dry eye and is currently in the early stages of treatment, which includes antibiotics, lubricants and tear-stimulant topical medications. Get well soon Saul! 😅💧

Little Hattie popped into see us and we couldn’t resist a quick cuddle! She’s a really happy and well-measured puppy, and her owner has done a great job settling her in and socialising her. Well done! 🏆👏🏻

“I’ve known little Erne for 5 or 6 years, and it still touches me that his owner chooses to drive 30-40 minutes to see us, even though there are vets much closer to her. Owners are really missing having continuity of care for their pets at the moment, something I’ve believed in strongly for some time. Trust and understanding come from long-standing relationships between vet and owner, and it’s up to all of us to seek out and nurture these beneficial connections”. It’s Zoe’s last day today! We have been very lucky to have had Zoe’s important contribution to our practice at this vital time, and we would like to wish her all the very best in her new role. She has bought a lot of love and personal attention to her pet patients, but has also been key to the administrative side of the clinic and helping our clients. Thank you Zoe, it means a lot and we will miss you! 😢 🙏🏻

Coco came in as a last minute spay today and she did really well! A bitch spay is not an easy procedure, and it takes many years as a surgeon to become confident and competent at it. We have a dedicated theatre, use surgical gowns, drapes and gloves; and offer pre-anaesthetic blood testing to check the patient’s vital organs prior to the procedure. Our surgeon uses self-locking surgical knots to tie off the ovaries and uterus prior to removal. We use methadone as our main opioid pain-relief, and use local anaesthetic techniques to block the ovarian pedicles and the wound itself. Our female neuters also go home in a comfy medical suit, which is nicer than a plastic collar. We treat our patients like they are one of our own. They go home comfortable and happy, having had a fast, gentle and safe procedure. This is what makes us different 💛😊🐶

The perfect dental treatment! Bertie came to us for a health check aged 5 years, grade 1 gingivitis was diagnosed, and a recommendation made to perform a dental assessment with ultrasonic cleaning and polishing. Under general anaesthesia, a dental x-ray series was performed, and all her teeth cleaned. You can clearly see the before and after images. If that tartar is left on the teeth, it ultimately leads to tooth loss. It is much better to have a regular dental clean every 1-4 years, rather than one dental when the patient is suffering pain and abscessation in their senior years. Bertie’s owner is really pleased, and we will be making a recommendation for dental home care at her next visit. So don’t delay, dental health is vital for a prosperous, happy and healthy pet! 🐶 🦷 🪥
