The key point to remember is that the risk of anaesthesia is nearly always way lower than the short and longterm health risk of the medical problem your pet is currently facing. Having experienced, trained and registered nurses, along with modern monitoring equipment, such as the multiparameter monitor seen in the reel; and a flexible and bespoke anaesthesia plan for each patient, go a long way to providing safer anaesthesia and good patient outcomes.

Angelo was really sick when he came into us in the afternoon, having vomited up a rubber band and a piece of foam sponge - in pain and very nauseous. He was made comfortable and investigated using blood tests, x-rays and ultrasound, which revealed a small amount of gas in his intestine and marked distension of his stomach. The potential foreign body is always a challenge for vet teams to diagnose. Some are very obvious on x-ray (bone, stone, metal), others (plastic, cloth, organic material) much less so. There was no immediate indication of obstruction, so the decision was made to manage him medically overnight. Angelo went on to make a full recovery. Heart disease is, unfortunately, a common finding in our feline friends. Data shows up to 1 in 3 cats have a heart murmur, and 50% of these murmurs have an underlying pathology. High blood pressure, thyroid disease and cardiomyopathy, a disease of the heart muscle, are the most common causes. Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) is the most common cardiac disease of cats, this is where the main part of the heart muscle is thickened and stiff. Signs of heart disease present very late and are often catastrophic. Thrombosis, heart failure and sudden death can occur. Fortunately, vets have the opportunity to help. By listening to your cat’s heart during the annual vaccination and health check, we can pick-up murmurs, split heart sounds and gallop rhythms which can be a sign of cardiac disease. Under a light sedation, we can ultrasound your cat’s heart and check everything is ok. If heart disease is found, it’s much better to know about it, so it can be monitored and treatment instigated.
