Samples are sent to a specialist fish laboratory in Holland. The data collected can determine which type of pathogenic bacteria are present in the water which can aid treatment of  bacterial infections or perhaps more importantly, can be used to predict whether an infection might break out - whi...

Working with some poorly discus this week. This group were presenting with loss of colour, abnormal pitching and inappetence following some new introductions. Gill fluke were identified on skin scrapes along with a lot of excess mucous. Hopefully we’ve caught the infection with enough time to turn it around!

Very pleased to hear back from one of my patients I saw near the end of October. This little guy initially presented with a fungal like lesion on the nose which had started to eat away at the top lip, stopping him from eating and rooting around in the gravel for food. After the fungal infection was cleared, the skin started to slough away. Thankfully, with an in water antibacterial treatment and a dose of salt, the skin has no fully healed and little fish is free from quarantine, reunited with his old chums and back to his old self!

Improvised hospital tank for this little guy! This Kohaku has been suffering with sporadic episodes of erratic, abnormal swimming. So far a course of antibiotics, Vitamin B complex and anti-inflammatories have failed to fix the problem. Differential diagnoses for this case include; traumatic injury (eg. Broken spine often seen following electrocution or collision accidents) inflammation and infection.
We have adapted our treatment protocol to include doses of steroid with the hope that if there is inflammation present this will aid healing. Sadly if this doesn’t work, we will have to consider euthanasia based on poor quality of life grounds. As what fun is a world where you can swim around efficiently or eat? Stay tuned 👀

Last week I had a rare opportunity to ultrasound a patient I have been working up for coelomic swelling.

The fish was lightly sedated for the procedure at a local veterinary clinic.
Unfortunately the ultrasound showed, as we had feared, an ovarian tumour full of cystic structures. The black arrow shows a soft tissue density, believed to be the tumorous ovarian tissue. The white arrows show, fluid filled cysts within the ovarian tissue.

Given the sheer size and number of the cysts present on the ultrasound, surgery has been deemed too complex and risky for the fish.

A quick shout out and thank you to North Weald Veterinary Surgery, who so kindly and willingly let me use their premises and equipment for the procedure - both owners and myself are very grateful!

Remember these two pearl scale buddies? Ulcer treatment has worked an absolute treat! For those interested, treatment consisted of topical debridement with potassium permanganate, Acriflavin and salt in the water.

Really pleased to share that the discus mentioned in an earlier post, suffering with abnormal spinning behaviour and poor body condition have made an excellent recovery following treatment for a protozoal infection!

11/05/2020

Ever heard of too much of a biofilter? Well it is possible! Nitrifying bacteria like those responsible in the nitrogen cycle for removing ammonia and nitrites use carbonates and bicarbonates (KH) as an energy source. The biofilter is continually removing KH from the aquatic system.
In this case, we suspect a continued overdose of ‘good bacteria’ has contributed towards a crash in KH and a resultant dip in pH. When first noticed this system was down to 0 KH and had a pH of 5.5!
Daily dosing with Kusuri biobalance has slowly started to bring up the KH and pH to more acceptable levels. It’s very important to raise the KH slowly so as to avoid sudden increases in pH and unnecessary stress on the fish! As a minimum, I am aiming for a KH of 6 degrees 🧪
