"I very recently said goodbye to my sweet Mackie whom I adopted from Animal Care Centers of NYC (ACC) and I wanted to share his story with the Susie Senior Dogs community.

Mackie was adopted at the age of anywhere between 8 and 10 years old. I was working at NYCACC and saw him the day he got dropped off in the admissions office. He looked at me and tilted his head. That was the moment I knew I had to bring him home with me.

2562 days will never have been enough with him.

Despite his ailments like being toothless and being limited with mobility, he was the strongest and bravest little Yorkie, courageous enough to put a Rottweiler in his place. He loved of food, especially pizza and edamame, beds, his hedgeopher toy and the blow dryer.

For 7 years, he was by my side through some big moves, life changes, adventures and everything in between. He snuggled up with me when I was sad and put a smile on my face with every little snore, every howl at a fire truck, and with the way he swam sideways. He sat on my lap during road trips from Canada to Florida, per his barking request, and guarded me against maintenance staff by nipping at their ankles with no teeth, of course. He even shared his toys and bed, maybe not so willingly at first, with all 13 foster pets we welcomed into our home.

Not having him around for the next chapters of my life and carrying him around on walks will be by far the hardest because he left such a big hole in my heart.

I once wrote how I’ll never know where life took him before me or even his real birthday. But none of that matters anymore because I know I loved every day with him and he was and always will be the most important thing in my life.

I didn’t ever want him to suffer so I made the incredibly difficult choice and while my mind is fueled with all the what ifs, the only immutable feeling is how much I loved Mackie and would forever be grateful that he found his way into my life.

Say Hi to Our OldPuppy !

This is Susie, the inspiration behind Susie's Senior Dogs, about one month before her death. She was old. Very old. And she lived a very good life in her old age until, suddenly, her quality of life was not good anymore and we were forced to make the heartbreaking decision to help her cross the rainbow bridge. No matter how much you know it's the right thing to doβ€” how do you choose the day to quite literally put an end to the dog who you love so much? Old age in dogs is a hard thing to describe. "Old" is relative, really. And the aging process can be easily missed, especially when their decline is slow and steady over months or years. Their death may feel like it came out of nowhere, but, later on, when you look back it was so clearly the end.

The thing about loving old dogs over and over and over again is that you get better at it. And you get better at saying goodbye. Truly, you do. To anyone who has recently lost a pet for the very first timeβ€” that heartbreak is so real, so raw and it feels like it will never go away. Never. (And, to some, even reading this right now might make you feel even more distant from being understood, and that nobody could ever understand the bond you had between you and your dog. Because we've felt those feelings too.) But that's exactly what makes you the perfect person to try againβ€” because you loved an animal so much you were heartbroken in their parting from this world.

We're incredibly proud of the work Susie's Senior Dogs has accomplished over the years in bringing light to senior dog adoption, and spotlighting the seniors who thought they would never have a chance at The Good Life in their twilight years. But it's the humans - the adopters - who have loved these old dogs that must get a huge thank you. Thank you for giving your hearts.

Old dogs....oh how wonderful they are!

We welcome your wise words, memories or just plain ramblings on the one(s) who broke your heart... ❀️
