There are so many fantastic insights in the veterinary world right now that are going to change and vastly improve the way we care for our dogs and cats. One of them is the realisation that bathing their bodies in poison may not be a great idea for the health of our dogs and cats, the humans sharing their space or the planet.

….gut imbalances can also contribute to behavioural issues.

The transition period for owners of XL Bully type dogs has begun ⚠️

Owners who wish to keep their dog can apply now to an exemption scheme.

To receive a Certificate of Exemption, owners must hold public liability insurance for their dog and pay an application fee. It must be microchipped and be neutered by a certain date depending on age.

The dog must then be muzzled and on a lead in public throughout its lifetime and kept in a secure place.

During the transition period, owners who no longer wish to keep their dogs can arrange for a vet to euthanise them and apply for compensation towards this.

These actions must be done by 1 February 2024.

After the transition period ends, owners without a Certificate of Exemption could receive a criminal record and unlimited fine if they are found in possession of an XL Bully type dog.

We’ve added XL Bully type dogs to the list of breeds banned under the Dangerous Dogs Act 🚫

From 31 December 2023 breeding, selling, advertising, rehoming, abandoning and allowing an XL Bully dog to stray will be illegal.

These dogs must also be on a lead and muzzled in public from 31 December.

If you wish to keep your XL Bully type dog, you have until the end of January to register them and comply with strict requirements.

Details on the exemption process will be provided in due course.

DENTASTIX!

Has your vet ever recommended these to help clean your dog’s teeth?

Perhaps they told you that these chews are great at cleaning teeth!

WRONG ❌

Not only are these ingredients harmful to your dog’s health, but they can also cause cancer.

These chews are also soft and rubbery. Would you clean your teeth with a gummy bear?

🐶

Natural ways to help clean your dogs teeth -

• raw bones, such as beef ribs

• coconut oil - pop some on your finger and rub along your dog’s teeth (you can also use a dog toothbrush!)

• plaque off powder

• dental formula by nutri-paw

Jumping on walks!

Whilst this behaviour may look cute (and it probably was when she was young), it’s not only putting unnecessary pressure on her joints, but the public can also become alarmed by it.

In order to resolve the jumping, the owners had to understand why it was happening in the first place.

This dog had no boundaries or rules, inside the home and out. And the jumping was simply a projection of her excitement, but it had become a habit over time - she’s been doing this from 12 weeks of age, and she is a year old in this video!

So, how did we do it? Firstly, we did not correct her for this behaviour.

I personally wouldn’t correct a dog for a behaviour (unless dangerous) which has been reinforced over time, unintentionally, because that’s not fair to the dog.

What we did was add some structure & rules to the walk (video coming…), and we channeled her excitement elsewhere! It really is that simple!

Lightening speed ⚡️

Let’s talk about the recall command…

Recall is something many dog owners struggle with, and I feel this is due to a lack of education.

Don’t feel bad about it, because you don’t know what you don’t know.

Recall is one of the last (basic) obedience commands I will usually teach a new dog - this is because the dog is already displaying behavioural issues.

Recall is a behaviour issue rather than a training issue - you can teach a dog recall using a long line & treats for months and months and months, but as soon as the long line is detached, the dog has ‘forgotten’ the command.

The reality is, that the dog does not find any value in coming back to their owner, therefore ignoring them or finding something better to do (sniff, run over to other dogs, find prey etc).

If your dog has behavioural issues - reactivity, pulling on lead, no engagement… it would be unfair to expect a dog to come back to you.

Resolve the behavioural issues whilst building the recall command, and it will become reliable in time!

Your Pet Parenting Style Shapes Your Dog’s Behavior

According to the results of the study by the Oregon State University, pet parenting style does predict patterns of dog behavior and cognition. Pet parents with high expectations and high responsiveness to their dogs have the most positive influence on the behavior and cognition of their pets. 🐶🫶👩

Discover more about the findings of this study when you read today’s free pet blog on our new website, linked in the comments.

Dog training tip! 🐾

24/01/2023

Engagement is key when your dog is off lead!

If you let your dog off the lead and they pay no attention to you, or have no recall command, then you are essentially playing with your dog’s life.

Working in the veterinary industry for over 15 years taught me just how important obedience training was.

I nursed thousands and thousands of dogs who had been hit by a car, had been attacked by another dog, or had eaten something poisonous whilst out on a walk.

You owe it to your dog to get them the training they need 🐾

Hand signals faded out!

Obedience/trick training is a process. One that takes time, patience and consistency!

If you’re using lures to gain a position, remember to fade those out whilst adding in the command.
