Dogs have always been a passion of mine, I grew up with rescue dogs and really became passionate when I started volunteering with a small charity in Lancashire 7 years ago. With them, I was involved in walking, home checks, transports and vet visits, assessments, fostering and adoptions. My family adopted a dog from them who was unfortunately attacked by another dog and became fear aggressive whic

h is where my passion for training reactive dogs began. I started training with Dawn Heaton from Preston Tricks dogs 6 years ago, starting with basic training and leading in to tricks, scent, recall, heelwork and branching out in to the science behind training. Courses that I have attended include;

First Aid and Emergency Care

The Science of Learning with Nando Brown
The Open Paw with Kelly Dunbar
Canine Zoopharmacognosy with Isla Fishburn
Play workshop with Craig Oglivie
30 Days of Canine Science with School of Canine Science

WSDA 6 Week Scent Course
Trickstravaganza
Tellington T Touch
The Real Dog Yoga
Rapid Recall
Loose Lead Walking

Anxious Dogs (with Nicky Crowe)
Sexier than a Squirrel with Absolute Dogs

I am also studying both veterinary medicine with The Royal Veterinary college and The Behaviour Bible with the School of Canine Science, both due to be completed in 2024. I am keen to continue learning and only use evidence based, kind training methods with all dogs in my care. My experience also extends to reactive dogs; whether that be people, bikes, cars or other dogs and I am confident in handling dogs with issues. My own dog is an example of my passion for training. I adopted him from Wood Green, The Animal's Charity in September 2020 and he was reactive to dogs, had an inability to settle, very mouthy and humpy... generally had no manners. He has since achieved;

- Kennel Club Good Citizen Award, Bronze
- DMWYD Trick Titles, Novice, Intermediate and Expert
- PTD White and Yellow Trick Bandana
- PTD Trick of the Month (moneybox)
- Second place for indication in an online scent competition
- 3 Canicross Medals, 10km, 21.1km and "A marathon in a week"
- National 3 Peaks in less than 24 hours
- Yorkshire 3 Peaks in 8hr46minutes

He also does disc work and has started heelwork (for either obedience or bite sports) and agility. Look forward to hearing from you!

Does your dog get stressed, drool, or even avoid getting into the car?

Car aversion can be caused by motion sickness, chronic pain, or past negative experiences.

But the good news is: there are ways to help your pup enjoy car journeys again! 🚗🐾

Here's what you need to know about the causes:

1️⃣ Motion Sickness: Puppies are especially prone due to immature inner ear structures, but this can improve with time.
2️⃣ Chronic Pain: Conditions like arthritis or spinal issues can make car rides uncomfortable.
3️⃣ Negative Associations: Stressful past experiences, confined spaces, or sensory overload might be at play.

Helping your dog feel safe and comfortable starts with understanding their needs. Save this post for tips and share it with other dog parents! 🐶💙

Is your dog’s behaviour trying to tell you something about their health? 🐾

Behavioural changes aren’t just about training or environment—they can also be caused by underlying health issues, including endocrine disorders. These conditions result from hormone imbalances and can have a profound impact on your dog’s behaviour and overall well-being.

Here’s a quick breakdown of five key endocrine disorders to be aware of:

1. Hypothyroidism 💤

What it is: An underactive thyroid gland.

Behavioural signs: Lethargy, irritability, aggression, fearfulness, loss of interest in play.

Physical signs: Weight gain, hair thinning, cold intolerance.

Management: Daily thyroid hormone replacement.

2. Cushing’s Disease (Hyperadrenocorticism) 🌙

What it is: Overproduction of cortisol.

Behavioural signs: Restlessness, anxiety, irritability, disrupted sleep.

Physical signs: Thirst, urination, pot-bellied appearance, thinning hair.

Management: Medications or surgery.

3. Addison’s Disease (Hypoadrenocorticism) 💔

What it is: Underproduction of cortisol and other hormones.

Behavioural signs: Depression, clinginess, shaking, loss of interest.

Physical signs: Vomiting, diarrhoea, weight loss, poor appetite.

Management: Lifelong hormone replacement.

4. Diabetes Mellitus 🩸

What it is: Insufficient insulin production, leading to high blood sugar.

Behavioural signs: Irritability, aggression, low stress tolerance, fatigue.

Physical signs: Thirst, urination, weight loss, cataracts.

Management: Insulin injections and dietary changes.

5. Hyperthyroidism (Rare in Dogs) 🔥

What it is: Overactive thyroid gland (more common in cats).

Behavioural signs: Hyperactivity, anxiety, vocalisation, reduced focus.

Physical signs: Weight loss, thirst, rapid heart rate.

Management: Medication or surgery.

💡 What to do next:
1️⃣ Monitor symptoms: Look out for changes in behaviour, appetite, or energy.
2️⃣ Schedule a vet visit: Diagnostic tests like blood work can identify hormonal imbalances.
3️⃣ Follow the treatment plan: With proper care, many endocrine disorders are manageable.

Winter Safety Tips for Your Dog

❄️ 5 Winter Safety Tips for Your Dog ❄️
Cold weather brings unique challenges for our furry friends. From icy hazards to joint pain, here’s how to keep your dog safe and happy this winter:

1️⃣ Watch for Hypothermia 🥶
Dogs can struggle with freezing temperatures. Keep walks short, use a warm coat, and watch for signs like shivering or lethargy.

2️⃣ Avoid Frozen Water 🌊
Frozen lakes and ponds are dangerous! Keep your dog on a lead to avoid accidents on thin ice.

3️⃣ Protect Their Paws from Grit and Salt 🐾
Winter grit can irritate paws and cause digestive upset if licked off. Wash paws after walks or use dog boots for extra protection.

4️⃣ Hydration Still Matters 💧
Even in cold weather, dehydration can happen. Make sure your dog has plenty of fresh water—snow isn’t a substitute!

5️⃣ Cold Can Worsen Joint Pain 🛏️
Arthritic dogs may feel stiffer and more uncomfortable in winter. Keep walks gentle, provide a warm bed, and ask your vet about joint care options.

Winter adventures can be magical for you and your dog—just take a little extra care to ensure their safety. 🐕💙

10/11/2024

Arthritis is more common in dogs than most people realize. Studies show that between 16-37% of all dogs suffer from arthritis, and that number soars to around 80% for dogs over 8 years old. This means that, on average, one in every three to five consults in a veterinary clinic involves arthritis, a condition that often causes persistent, underlying pain.

But arthritis doesn’t just impact mobility. Chronic pain has widespread effects on a dog’s overall well-being. Pain increases stress hormones, which can contribute to heightened anxiety and, over time, lead to behavioral changes. Dogs in pain may struggle with disrupted sleep, and a lack of quality rest impacts both their mood and physical healing. Furthermore, compensating for sore joints with altered gait puts extra strain on other parts of the body, increasing the risk of additional injuries and discomfort. Chronic pain also weakens the immune system, leaving dogs more vulnerable to illness.

As pet owners and caregivers, it's essential to watch for signs of pain, such as reduced activity, changes in behavior, or subtle shifts in posture. By addressing pain early, we’re not only improving their quality of life but also helping prevent further health complications. Our dogs deserve comfort and care through all stages of life, and being proactive about pain management is a vital part of that.
