Fifteen Years Living in the small gap between Two Walls [Updated Info]

Fifteen years ago, a feral cat named Sweetie was trapped and neutered by another charity as part of a trap, neuter, return scheme and these cats were released back onto an estate where she ended up living in a narrow gap between two brick walls where she felt safe and secure. It became her whole world, a dark space where she ate, slept, and watched life pass by from the shadows.

For all these years, local residents have fed her. Only one elderly lady was ever able to get close enough to touch poor Sweetie and she fed her everyday on the top of that wall. When that person was taken ill and Sweetie recently stopped eating, concern grew as no one could reach her to help, until now when we were contacted a few days ago.

Our Canning Town Rescue Team constructed something so the trap could be fastened to the top of the wall and managed to safely capture Sweetie at last this week. She’s now with our veterinary team, being assessed and cared for, finally free from the cold shelter she’s known her entire life.

Sweetie's story is a stark reminder of how easily stray cats can slip through the cracks, literally and figuratively. Many spend years roaming, fighting, and fending for themselves, growing old in silence and pain.

That’s why our Emergency Neuter Initiative is so crucial. Each cat we neuter means fewer kittens born to suffer, fewer left to live and die in desperate places like this one.

A 15-year-old cat deserves better than a life between two walls. Sweetie deserves comfort, kindness, and care in her final years.

🐾 Please, if you can, support our Emergency Neuter Initiative to prevent more cats from enduring lives like hers.

We are working to capture a photo of Sweetie but she is currently very frightened and hiding in her pen. When she calms down we will post a photo of this dear soul.

🚨Our Emergency Neutering Project is officially underway

Thanks to your incredible support, we kicked off this vital initiative this week, with our Lewisham team already hard at work carrying out the first neuters. Every cat neutered is one small victory in the fight to prevent the birth of unwanted kittens in 2026.

Every spay and neuter means fewer cats born into suffering, fewer desperate mums struggling to feed their litters, and fewer frightened cats and kittens left to fend for themselves on the streets.

To everyone who has donated, shared, or brought in their cats, thank you. You’re part of a compassionate community that’s helping to create lasting change for animals across London and Southeast.

An open letter to the person who left six kittens in a dog crate in the underpass under the A13

We want to start by saying, we understand how desperate people are when they become overwealmed by the number of cats in their homes, and so are the charities who would normally be able to help them.

Tending to more kittens than you are able to feed or look after is an enormous task and very stressful, even for the most experienced carers. We’re not here to judge you. We know that sometimes people find themselves in impossible situations, trying to do their best for the animals they love with very few options and very little money.

A member of the public found your kittens and brought them to our Canning Town clinic. We have taken them in, though we are struggling to find space to put them. What matters is that these kittens are safe now, wrapped in blankets, warm and fed. Our team treated their flea infestations so they can heal and feel comfortable again. Once they’re stronger, they’ll be wormed, vaccinated, and given all the care they need to grow and thrive.

Please, if you're reading this, we’re asking you for an act of kindness and responsibility. 🙏 Please bring the mum cat to us for neutering. We know she must still be out there, and we don’t want you, or her, to go through this again. Female cats can become pregnant again within weeks, even while still nursing a litter. That means before long, you could be facing another six (or more) babies in need of care.

One of our kind supporters has offered to cover the cost of her neutering. All we need is for you to contact us. No judgement, no questions asked, just a promise that we’ll help. Please call 0207 474 8811 or email [email protected].

If anyone reading this recognises who left these kittens, please share this post or pass our message along. You might be the bridge that helps their mum get the care she needs, and stops this from happening again.

ORIE🩵

Orie is a 1-year-old neutered male who’s looking for a loving forever home.

He’s a sweet-natured boy with a gentle soul. While he can be a little nervous around new people and unfamiliar situations, with patience and reassurance he quickly shows his affectionate side. Orie loves attention and is happiest when he has company around him.

He’s hoping to find a home with access to a garden where he can safely explore. Orie would be happy living alongside another cat, but he’d prefer a quieter household without young children. Teenagers, however, should be just fine.

Please email [email protected] with your name, address and contact phone number to register your interest in Orie. Please allow 5-7 days for a reply as we are short staffed and very busy.

We are prioritising homes that are local to our centre and these are the Canning Town catchment areas: East London, parts of North London and parts of West Essex.

Our cats are rescues, that have either been abandoned, stray, neglected or abused. All homes need to have a home check either by video call or in person and we will provide advice about caring for cats or kittens. This is also a chance for us to see what type of home you can offer to one of our cats and to best match a cat with your home and family.

Following a successful home visit, we will make an appointment for you to come and meet the cats at the shelter and adopt. If you have picked cat/s from the website, you will meet them on adoption day.

Lunar is a 4-year-old neutered female looking for a forever home with experienced cat owners.

Previously owned, Lunar was surrendered to us after developing behavioural issues that became difficult to manage in a busy household with children, we think her living as an indoor cat with children was too much for Lunar. Since arriving, she has shown us a mix of affection and sass—true to her independent nature.

Lunar is a confident and vocal girl who enjoys attention on her terms. She’ll happily weave between your legs, come running for a fuss, and thrives on interaction. However, when she’s had enough, she makes her feelings known with a growl or grumble. If respected, she settles quickly—especially if food is involved! If pushed too far, she will scratch, so she needs someone who will listen to her signals and give her space when needed.

Highly food-motivated and intelligent, Lunar enjoys puzzle feeders and will eagerly chase down treats. She is a very active cat who can become frustrated when bored, so enrichment and play are essential parts of her care.

Lunar is looking for an adult-only home with no other cats. She would love access to a safe, secure garden(no direct road access), but if you have a large indoor home we will be happy to discuss it.

Please email [email protected] with your name, address and contact phone number to register your interest in Lunar. Please allow 5-7 days for a reply as we are short staffed and very busy.

Meet Ripley! She’s a nearly 3-year-old neutered female looking for a loving new home. Ripley is full of energy and loves to run, play, and chase her toys. She’ll happily turn anything into a game! Once she’s had her fun, she enjoys attention and affection. She’s looking for a home with a garden where she can explore, without other cats, and can live with older teenagers.

Several years ago, we took in a group of feral cats as part of a TNR project (Trap, Neuter, Return). TNR is a humane method of managing cat populations where cats are trapped, neutered or spayed, then returned to their territory where they are regularly fed. It prevents endless cycles of unwanted litters while allowing cats to live out their lives where they are most comfortable.

For years, these cats lived safely in the spot they knew as home, until last year, when their site was suddenly demolished without notice. We were not made aware of this until very recently. Someone moved them into an underground garage and we were contacted about their welfare by the kind people who have looked after them for so long. With winter approaching, we are urgently trying to find them safe, warm shelter.

There are nine cats, all now seniors, sheltering in harsh conditions as the cold sets in. They deserve so much better. We are appealing for help to find them a farm, garden Centre, country property, or even a secure shed in or around someone's property in Big Hill where they can be fed and live out their golden years in safety and warmth.

As we work to secure a safe and loving place for these nine senior cats, we are reminded of just how urgent our wider mission is. Every day, cats across the country are losing their homes, facing abandonment, or being born into dangerous and uncertain lives. Without neutering, the cycle never stops.

That’s why, alongside finding shelter for these seniors, we are also raising funds for our emergency neuter project. By preventing more unwanted litters, we can stop tomorrow’s kittens from facing the same harsh struggles these cats have endured.

✨ Please consider donating today. Your gift will help fund the emergency neutering that is so vital to breaking this cycle of suffering. Together, we can give these seniors comfort in their final years, and protect countless others from the same fate.

✨ Lucie Update ✨

Not long ago, we shared an urgent appeal for a tiny kitten named Lucie. She was found collapsed in a garden, swarming with flies and in desperate need of help. Lucie was suffering from a re**al prolapse, a painful and potentially life-threatening condition. Thanks to your incredible generosity, our team was able to give her the surgery, treatment, and care she needed to survive.

We’re overjoyed to share that Lucie has made a swift recovery! She is now using her tray successfully, playing, and showing off a personality full of life and happiness. None of this would have been possible without your kindness and donations. Thank you for standing with her when she needed you most. ❤️

One of our nurses, Charlotte, summed it up perfectly:

“Every now and again a little kitty will steal my heart, and Lucie is doing so. I adored her the second I was on duty when she was rushed in. Her fight and her tiny character coming to life because we saved her is just incredible. And now I have the most amazing job of loving her alongside my amazing colleagues.”

🐾 From all of us at Celia Hammond Animal Trust, thank you for helping Lucie and countless other cats in need to heal.

Paddington’s heart 🩵(and his chart) are full. Thank you for showering him with love.

Thank you to every person who sent a kiss to Paddington. The kindness flowing his way has left us all humbled and grateful. After years of being misunderstood, pushed away, and treated so cruelly, Paddington is finally learning just how much kindness exists in the world.

He’s asked that his special “kiss chart” be displayed proudly on his pen so he can remember forever just how many kisses he’s been given. It means the world to him (and to us!) to see so much love flowing his way.

Paddington was a little overwhelmed by all the generosity, but in the happiest way. To celebrate, he enjoyed a few Dreamies Soft Sticks (much easier on his tender gums than the crunchy ones) before curling up for an early night in his warm, fluffy bed.

From the bottom of Paddington’s heart, and ours, thank you. You’ve made him feel truly cherished. 💕 Your kindness goes even further, as every kiss also supports our urgent neutering effort, helping to prevent countless unwanted litters and reduce the suffering of cats just like Paddington.

Paddington’s heart 🩵(and his chart) are full. Thank you for showering him with love.

Thank you to every person who sent a kiss to Paddington yesterday. The kindness flowing his way has left us all humbled and grateful. After years of being misunderstood, pushed away, and treated so cruelly, Paddington is finally learning just how much kindness exists in the world.

When we first heard about Paddington, our hearts broke. He was living on a farm in Kent, where a colony of feral cats had been left to multiply unchecked. Farm workers said he was “unfriendly” and “vicious,” even throwing stones at him to drive him away. But the truth is, Paddington wasn’t vicious at all, he was just misunderstood.

Unneutered cats, especially stray males, live incredibly hard lives. Their hormones push them to roam, fight, and mate constantly. They stray far from safety, always driven by urges they can’t control. This leads to endless injuries, infections, and hunger. Their hormones are in charge, and they pay the price with their bodies and their wellbeing.

The moment we got Paddington to safety, the mask of aggression melted away. Within minutes of being touched gently, this “vicious” boy was nuzzling for tickles and headbumps. It's clear he’s been through years of struggle, his canines have all broken and beneath his thick fur he is covered in scabs and war wounds. All he wants now is love. 💕

Paddington’s story is exactly why our Emergency Neutering Appeal is so urgent. The UK is facing an animal overpopulation crisis, the worst we've ever seen. If we don’t neuter enough cats, thousands more will be born into the same cycle of suffering. Our goal is to neuter 200 cats in each clinic every single week in October, November and December to help break this devastating cycle. We can't do it without your help.

To celebrate Paddington’s newfound love of affection, we’ve set up a virtual Kissing Booth just for him! For every £10 donated, Paddington will receive a kiss (and believe us, he can’t get enough). Every kiss you give will go directly towards our neutering initiative, preventing the birth of tens of thousands of unwanted kittens in 2026. As soon as Paddington is ready for his new forever home we will post here.
