This Mum cat tried to bring her babies to safety… but the window was shut.

We were called out to a woman’s house where a mother cat had been trying to raise her kittens on the roof. She’d been climbing up each day to feed them, and in a desperate attempt to keep them safe, she brought her kittens to the window sill to try and get them inside.

The woman who had taken pity on this mum cat and was feeding her was desperately allergic to cats and couldn't touch them as her allergies were so severe that she was having difficulty breathing. She had to keep the window shut to stop the mum cat and her kittens from coming in.

When our rescue team arrived, we were told that three of the kittens had disappeared. Only one kitten remained. The woman told us the mum cat had been desperately crying out for her three missing kittens. Dispite leafleting the area we were unable to find the missing kittens. Outdoors is no place for newborn kittens, there are too many dangers.

We acted fast to rescue this gorgeous mum and her sole surviving baby, they are now safe at our Canning Town Centre. She’s warm, she’s fed, and she’s finally able to care for her kitten in peace. Surprisingly the mother and her kitten are relatively friendly, so we suspect they may not have been born outside, but rather once belonged to someone.

But this is just the beginning.

Kitten season is here. And that means hundreds of vulnerable kittens will be born in alleyways, sheds, skips, gardens and gutters and will need our help.

Each mum cat we take in needs warmth, safety, vet care and a lot of food! A nursing mum cat can consume as many as 12 pouches of food a day just to produce enough milk to feed her litter.

With your help, we can be there for the desperate mum cats trying to survive this season. With your help we can offer more kittens the second chance they deserve. We are anticipating this to be the worst kitten season we've ever experienced, with so many people being effected by the cost of living crisis and unable to care for their pets.

Please donate today to help us rescue and care for more mums and babies this kitten season. Thank you for your support. 🙏🏼

Eggnog was found as a stray and was well known in the area. When people noticed he had stopped eating and was losing weight, they called our Canning Town Clinic for help.

After a thorough check-up, the vet discovered a mass in his mouth. Thankfully, surgery successfully removed the mass, and the biopsy results came back clear. Eggnog has since made a full recovery, regained his appetite, and put the weight back on.

Eggnog is a loving and energetic 4-year-old neutered male who now is looking for his forever home. This lively boy adores people and will happily follow you around wherever you go. He loves to play but is still figuring out what toys are, as he's never had any before—sometimes, he just runs around them in confusion!

Eggnog will need a home with a garden. He cannot live with other cats but can live with older children.

Please email [email protected] with your name, address and contact phone number.

Our cats are rescues, that have either been abandoned, stray, neglected or abused. All homes need to have a home check either by video call or in person and we will provide advice about caring for cats or kittens. This is also a chance for us to see what type of home you can offer to one of our cats and to best match a cat with your home and family.

Following a successful home visit, we will make an appointment for you to come and meet the cats at the shelter and adopt. If you have picked cat/s from the website, you will meet them on adoption day.

We are prioritising homes that are local to our centre and these are the Canning Town catchment areas: East London, parts of North London and parts of West Essex.

If you can offer a home to a harder to home cat, we will consider a home outside these areas.

🐈‍⬛Captain is a charming three-year-old neutered male in search of a loving home.

Found as a stray, this sweet boy endured life on the streets for months, possibly even years, before being rescued. He arrived at the shelter in poor health, but thanks to care and treatment, he has made a full recovery and is now ready for his next chapter.

Captain is an affectionate and social cat who adores attention. He’s always at the front of his enclosure, eagerly waiting to greet visitors. He would love a home with access to a garden and could happily live with another cat or children.

Please email [email protected] with your name, address and contact phone number to register your interest in Captain.

Rescued from a home in crisis. Could you be their fresh start?

Butterscotch and Jumble have been taken in as part of an unexpected rescue of dogs in addition to a group of cats that we were planning to take in.

We had been asked to help with taking in twelve unneutered cats but there also turned out to be a large number of unneutered small dogs at the property also urgently in need of attention and new homes. The elderly owners loved their cats and dogs but they had bred out of control and the situation had "got out of hand". So far we have taken in 16 dogs, four of which have been transferred to foster homes via our Sussex Sanctuary.

The twelve dogs at our Lewisham centre have been neutered and microchipped, vaccinated, and treated for fleas and worms.

Butterscotch and Jumble are both male and are approx 1 year old. They are small dogs, poodle X. These two are quite friendly and would suit an adult home or family with older children.

They have previously been used to living with a lot of dogs and having run of the downstairs of a house and access to a garden but have not had any training so are not used to wearing collars, harnesses or leads - although we have started getting them used to these. They are not house trained either so whoever takes these two lovely dogs on needs to be prepared to go back to puppy basics with training them.

They will require a home with a secure enclosed garden and owners with lots of patience and kindness. They can live with other dogs. Although we have taken in cats from the same house the cats were upstairs and the dogs were downstairs, they appear to take no notice of cats but we do want to further test this before we decide if they can live with cats.

To enquire about Butterscotch and Jumble please email [email protected]

ADOPTION PROCESS:

Because our cats are rescued we do like to meet potential adopters this can either be at your home (home visit) or via a video call e.g WhatsApp this is an informal visit to provide advice about caring for cats or kittens e.g health care, feeding, settling in and also an opportunity for us to feel reassured that you could provide a good home.

Following a successful home assessment we can make an appointment for you to come and meet our cats.

We are prioritising homes that are local to our centres. Lewisham Branch Homing catchment area: All SE London and BR (Bromley) postcodes. Also N.Kent (Welling, Bexley, Sidcup, Swanley, Dartford), Croydon and SW London (SW8, SW9, SW2, SW11, SW4, SW12, SW16) If you can offer a home to a 'harder to rehome' cat we will consider homes outside our usual rehoming areas.

Our address is 233-235, Lewisham Way SE4 1UY - please bring a donation of cat food to help us feed our rescue cats.

MJ and Thyme are best friends on the search for their forever home together! ✨🩵✨

MJ was rescued as an orphaned kitten and warmly welcomed by Thyme and his family at our Canning Town Centre. Since then, these two have formed an unbreakable bond.

Both boys are 9 months old, full of energy, mischief, and affection. MJ is always the first to greet new people, eager to be part of everything happening around him. Thyme isn’t far behind, always ready to join in the fun.

They love to chase each other around and, once they've tired themselves out, snuggle up together for a well-earned rest.

They’re looking for a home with a garden where they can explore and play. They can happily live with children and could also settle in with other cats.

➡️Please email [email protected] with your name, address and contact phone number to register your interest in these two lads.

What happened at that high-rise window?

We don’t know what caused two young Bengal cats to fall from a high-rise window, but we know it was fatal for one of them.

A member of the public saw both cats come down, one after the other, and rushed them to a private vet. Very sadly, one had already died on impact. The other, believed to be her sister, was critically injured but still alive. No owner has come forward.

We’ve named her Saffron.

It’s thought she landed on her front legs, which absorbed the impact. Both were fractured. Her jaw was probably the next to hit the ground as it was broken in two places. Her injuries were severe, and her prognosis was uncertain.

Saffron was brought to our Canning Town Clinic, underwent surgery and now faces many weeks of recovery, including splint changes every two weeks, tube feedings, pain relief and careful monitoring to avoid long-term complications.

Saffron struggled in the early days post-op, but now her gentle personality is beginning to emerge. She will press her nose to your forehead as if to say thank you and has started to learn how to walk again on her bandaged legs.

This young cat has survived a catastrophic fall, the loss of her sibling, and the sudden disappearance of her home and everything she once knew. Now she needs our help to heal.

Please click the link below or the button attached to this post to donate if you can to help cover the cost of Saffron’s veterinary care. She’s survived the unthinkable, now we are fighting to give her everything chance to recover.

Mother’s Day began early for Edith…In the quiet hours of this morning, Edith gave birth to seven tiny kittens. She was brought to us just in time by a kind member of the public who’d seen her lingering in their garden all week—yet another hidden stray, thought to be abandoned by her owners. That’s eight more lives now relying on our charity for food, warmth, medical care, and eventually loving homes. Spaying and neutering your pets is one of the kindest things you can do to protect them, and to help control the overwhelming number of unwanted cats being born every day. If you’d like to help us care for Edith and her babies, we’re always grateful for donations of kitten food or supplies from our Amazon wishlist: amzn.to/3nXEZaA.

Greenbird is a 3-year-old neutered male in search of a loving home. One of our rescue workers found him lingering around a health center, and after asking around, we learned that he did have an owner. However, Greenbird was uncomfortable living with the children in the household, so he stayed outside and eventually ran away.

Since he hadn’t lived indoors or around people for a long time, Greenbird was very frightened when he first arrived at the shelter. With time and patience, he has made great progress—he now enjoys attention, though he still prefers a gentle approach.

Greenbird is blossoming into a sweet and affectionate boy. He would thrive in a home with a garden, patient and understanding owners, no other cats, and no children.

💕Two Hearts Left in Our Lobby💕

Yesterday a carrier was placed inside of our Canning Town Reception area containing two beautiful cats, plump and well-fed, one wearing a precious pink collar with a bell. Next to them was a handwritten note, filled with heartbreak and love.

Their person wrote:
“I am so very sorry. I can’t look after them anymore… please find them a good home and try to keep them together, as they have never been apart.”

We can’t begin to imagine what led to this moment, but we do know it must have been an incredibly painful decision. To the person who left this note: thank you. Thank you for loving them enough to make sure they would be safe. Thank you for telling us who they are ❤️Mini and Misty❤️ and for helping us understand their needs.

They are indoor cats, around 3 years old, spayed, gentle, and clearly adored. They’ve never been outside or around dogs, and we will make sure they don’t have to be. They’re safe with us now, snuggled up together, still as close as ever. We promise to find them a loving home—together—just like you asked.

If anyone out there is looking to open their heart and home to two bonded girls, please contact us. We know there’s someone out there who will treasure them as much as their previous person did.

Today, on National Epilepsy Day, we want to tell you about George, who is searching for a very special and experienced home. He was found wandering in West Ham Park, confused and alone. After being brought to the shelter, he soon began experiencing seizures. While they haven’t stopped completely, they are now well managed with medication.

Despite his condition, George is a loving and playful boy. He enjoys running around, following people, and greeting visitors the moment he hears the door open. He’s both a people cat and a cat’s cat—he gets along wonderfully with every feline friend he meets. With his adorable personality shining through more each day, he’s sure to be an amazing addition to the right home.

George requires medication twice a day, 12 hours apart, which he takes easily when mixed with food. He will be rehomed under our long-term foster scheme to ensure he continues receiving the care he needs.

George is looking for an indoor-only home with someone who is around most of the day or has another cat for companionship. He isn’t suited for a home with children. If you think you can provide George with the loving and stable home he deserves, please email [email protected] with your name, address and contact phone number to discuss his medical needs further.

Marley is a super sweet 6-year-old boy who spent two years living as a stray, being fed by a kind person who thought he was feral since he never wanted any attention. But one day, he showed up in the garden limping and when he was rescued, he was absolutely terrified. Sadly, his injured foot was too infected to save, and his back leg had to be amputated.

Since then, Marley has come such a long way at our Canning Town Centre. He’s turned into a friendly, affectionate boy who loves a fuss and even follows his favorite people around. He’s a total foodie, so treats are the way to his heart! He’s adapted amazingly well to life on three legs and still runs, jumps, and plays like a champ.

Marley would love a home with a garden, and he’d be happy living with other cats. He could also live with older teenagers.

Please visit our website at celiahammond.org to learn more about adoption Marley. 🩵

🚨 Update on the 39 Dogs & 12 Cats Urgent Rescue – Thank You for Your Support!

We are incredibly grateful for the generosity shown toward our ongoing rescue of 39 dogs and 12 cats. As our work primarily focuses on cats, managing such a high number of dogs has been a major undertaking that has required careful coordination and extra resources, but thanks to your kindness, we are making progress.

For those just hearing about this case, we were initially called to assist with neutering cats when we discovered an older couple struggling with an overwhelming number of animals. Their much-loved pets had bred out of control, and despite their best efforts, they could no longer cope.

We are ensuring all these animals receive neutering, microchipping, flea and worm treatment, and vaccinations. The dogs are mainly small cross breads and most will need to be rehomed in pairs or with other dogs, as they have lived closely together and will need time to adjust. They are not house trained or used to a collar and lead but are loving and friendly dogs. Some of the dogs had heavily matted coats and have required clipping, grooming and bathing.

We will be carrying out pre-adoption home visits so are looking for homes in the South East across East Sussex, North Kent, and Southeast London.

📩 To apply for adoption, please email [email protected].

Estimated Costs & How You Can Help⤵️

The veterinary costs alone for the dogs are estimated at £8,000, and we are still raising funds to cover this. Every donation helps us provide essential care for these animals.

Urgent Appeal for Supplies 🙏🏼

We are also in urgent need of used collars, leads, and harnesses—if you have any spare, please drop them off at our Lewisham Centre at 233-235 Lewisham Way, London SE4 1UY.

Additionally, we are looking for specific food and toys for both the dogs and cats. You can support us by donating through our Amazon wishlist:

💙 Thank you again for your kindness and generosity! Your support is truly making a difference for these animals.

Quentin was living as part of a feral street colony. However he turned out to be tame so we feel he deserves a chance to have a proper home.

He is a greedy-guts and will need owners who don't feel guilt-tripped into over feeding him. He is affectionate and really enjoys attention. He can though occasionally lash out (but not in a way that causes any sort of injury) if you pet him in a way he doesn't approve of. For that reason an adult-only home is needed for him.

Please email [email protected] with your name, address and contact phone number to register your interest in Quentin. 🙏🏼
