Bailey, a Labrador Retriever, was referred to our facility presenting with fever, lethargy, hyporoxia, and a persistent cough.

Taking a truly multi-disciplinary approach, Bailey was under the care of Dr Jodie Green (Internal Medicine) and Dr Kiki Tarvin (Surgery) as, alongside our imaging and anaesthesia teams, we diagnosed a lung abscess.

A thoracotomy was performed to successfully remove the abscess. While the exact cause remains undetermined, it is plausible that the abscess resulted from the inhalation of a foreign object, such as a grass seed.

We are pleased to report that Bailey has made a full recovery and has returned to an active lifestyle. ❤️

Finding out your pet has cancer can be scary, but did you know surgery can make a huge difference to their prognosis?

An operation can often be the first and most important step on your dog or cat’s cancer journey.

Here at London Vet Specialists, we have a surgical team with extensive knowledge and experience in complex cancer cases. We regularly operate on skin tumours, mast cell tumours, and sarcomas and are also leaders in minimally invasive surgery. This means we are well-equipped to carry out keyhole surgery, which provides less trauma and a quicker recovery for your pet.

From April we’ll also be opening up our oncology service from our purpose-built, state-of-the-art oncology suite. We’ll be offering comprehensive cancer care through a multidisciplinary approach – from working with the anaesthesia team and neurologists to provide a completely tailored plan to your pet.

Our new medical oncologist will be joining the team this spring as well!

Meet Kerry, 👋 one of our dedicated Registered Veterinary Nurses! With six years of experience, she's currently advancing her skills by pursuing an advanced nursing certificate in anaesthesia. Kerry also has a keen interest in theatre and diagnostics.

The most rewarding part of her job? Seeing our patients reunite with their families once they're well enough to go home.

Outside of work, Kerry enjoys riverside walks and staying active at the gym. At home, she loves diving into a good fiction book, often accompanied by her two mischievous cats, Ralph and Manny. 🐱.

🍫🐾 Happy Chocolate Day! While we humans love indulging in sweet treats (dark, milk, or white!), it's a day to remind pet owners about the hidden dangers chocolate poses to our pets.

Chocolate contains theobromine, which is highly toxic to cats and dogs. The darker the chocolate, the more dangerous it is!

Signs of chocolate poisoning include:
🚨 Vomiting or diarrhoea
🚨 Muscle tremors
🚨 Seizures
🚨 Irregular heartbeat

If your pet gets curious and sneaks a bite, don't wait - call your local vet straight away. Let's keep today sweet and safe for everyone. 💕🐶🐱

Meet Coco, a resilient rescue pup from Indonesia with a remarkable story.

Coco came to us with a history of corneal opacities and upon examination, we identified subtle stromal lipid changes in both eyes.

To investigate potential underlying systemic causes, we ran blood tests, which fortunately came back normal.

Coco's owner shared how impressed she was by our clinic and how caring we were during our examinations. Coco really trusted our veterinary team, which is something Coco's owner said hadn't happened in a long time.

Moments like these remind us why we’re passionate about what we do - earning the trust of patients like Coco and their loving families. We look forward to seeing her again soon and continuing her care. ❤️

Say hello to Erin Brennan!

Shortly after graduation from University College Dublin, Erin moved to London where she spent several years in general practice. While working towards advanced practitioner status in Veterinary Dermatology, Erin was accepted to the ECVD residency programme at the Royal Veterinary College.

After completing the programme, Erin decided to split her time between academic and private referral practice, so she worked between our practice and the Royal Veterinary College.

Her favourite types of cases to work up and treat are infectious diseases and autoimmune diseases. 💊

Outside of work Erin enjoys cooking and travelling. ✈️

Leia was referred to us when major abnormalities were seen on her bloodwork and it was clear her liver and kidneys weren't working as they should be.

Leia is fascinated by rats and has come close to them before. 🐀 This information, coupled with her bloodwork changes, raised suspicion about leptospirosis, a disease most commonly transmitted in rodent urine that causes major organ dysfunction, primarily in young dogs.

This can be life-threatening. Leia had an acute kidney injury as well as evidence of liver injury and required intensive care to help her recover. She had a feeding tube fitted to help provide nutritional support while she felt unwell and as a route to give oral medications.

As Leia was referred early and treatment was initiated rapidly, we were pleased to see her make great improvements under our care.

We're please to share that Leia has since been discharged home and is back to her usual happy self. ❤️

In December, we welcomed back Anya, who had previously interned under Janet, to spend some time at LVS, while she completes her residency in surgery at UGA in Georgia, USA. 🇺🇲

During her recent time with us, she was lucky enough to work with our orthopaedic surgeon Kiki to help care for Bambi, an Italian greyhound puppy with a broken leg who stole our hearts.

Bambi’s leg was X-rayed to confirm a fracture of the radius and ulna bones. These bones were fixated with metal plates and screws. We wish you a speedy recovery, Bambi!

Celebrating lovely Lola's bravery! 🐶

Lola was in pain and feeling fatigue after a grass seed lodged itself in the muscles of her spine.

She was seen by our head of soft tissue surgery Janet McClaran, who worked with our specialist imaging department to carry out a CT scan of her system to try and pinpoint the location of her pain.

It's thought the seed had been inhaled around two weeks before, moving itself through the lung to her back.

Lola's owners said they knew something was wrong when "she refused to eat dinner" because she "absolutely loves food" - which is often a good indication that something might be wrong with your pet.

Janet, an American and European board-certified surgery specialist, carried out a successful surgery to remove the seed, allowing Lola to get back to enjoying life - and her food! ❤️
