I know I bang on about it, but…

We’re having another heatwave this week with temperatures predicted to reach 30*

Dogs find temps from the mid 20s difficult, and really struggle with the high humidity we are currently experiencing.

As our temperature fluctuates so much they don’t have time to habituate to the change so struggle more than dogs in predictably hot countries where there is a gradual seasonal increase rather than our mad fluctuations.

On many occasions when temperatures have soared I have had dogs walked to me who have arrived showing signs of heat stress. (The precursor to heat stroke).

This has meant spending about 30 minutes cooling the dogs down before I’m able to start work. Obviously this is a bit of a nightmare for me time wise, but more importantly it’s not okay for the dogs.

Please do not walk your dog more than about five minutes to me if temperatures are hotter than 25* - they’ll be too hot, the pavement will be too hot.

Be extra mindful of elderly, young, overweight, ill or brachycephalic dogs. Do call out others you see inadvertently harming their dogs. Take water with you always and seek shade. Stick to early and late walks only.
