There is a common misconception that puppies should not have their fur cut or be fully groomed until they reach a certain age. . . At this mysterious point the coat fairy magically comes in the night and swaps out their coat to an adult one 🧚‍♀️🐶 . . Sadly this is a myth which some groomers and breeders still propagate. A puppy’s coat does change over time as they mature, but grooming a pup will not damage its coat. 🐶✂️👌🏻 . . We are not affecting the adult coat by clipping it "too young" - the only effect we see is the same we would see in an adult dog of the same breed. . . The coat is created inside the hair follicle. What we see above the skin is actually dead material -so it doesn't matter what we do to it - it's dead.... the only part that is alive is the base. . . When the pup is born it has a certain amount of hair follicles, as it grows older it develops more and more hair follicles -hence why we think the coat is getting thicker and thicker when the pup grows up. The diameter of the hair follicles gets larger and larger -so the hairs created inside get thicker and thicker. . . Depending on breed there are also more and more hairs created inside each hair follicle. . . All of this is genetically predetermined and happens over the course of the first few months. . . So puppies develop an adult coat as they mature, they don't "change coat”. The coat matures as more and more hairs are created and the hairshafts get thicker and thicker each time they shed the old hair that was created inside the narrower follicle. . . The bottom line is that puppies can have their fur cut whenever it suits them and their owner and should start coming for grooming intros as soon as they are fully vaccinated. . .
