๐Ÿ™๐Ÿš‘Bonya came to the emergency team not eating and was very lethargic. Katy one of our Night Vets was quick to diagnose a Pyometra (An infection in her Uterus) which left untreated can be fatal.

๐Ÿฉบ๐Ÿ’ŠBonya was very anaemic so the team performed an emergency blood transfusion. Over the following hours, Bonya was watched โ€˜like a hawkโ€™ by our fantastic nursing team ensuring she was strong enough to undergo the surgery.

Our very own super vet Katy removed the infected Uterus which weighed a WHOPPING 3.7KG!! WOW! We are pleased to report that Bonya is doing super well thanks to the team's efforts here at 24hr Vetcare and Streatham Hill Vets! ๐Ÿ™‚ ๐Ÿ’š

Saffie visited our amazing Streatham Hill Vets 24hr team in the early hours of Saturday morning, as she was struggling to give birth. Our night Vet Rachel decided that the safest option was to perform an emergency caesarean section.
She is now a mummy to an incredible 10 puppies! Mum and pups are recovering well and will be returning home later today.

From 31 December 2023 breeding, selling, advertising, rehoming, abandoning, and allowing an XL bully dog to stray will be illegal in the UK.

Over the last few weeks, our surgeries have received a lot of questions from concerned XL bully owners as the new regulations are now fast approaching for England and Wales.

First and foremost, we want to assure you that we will do our absolute best to support our clients throughout the entire process of registering their dog. Our goal is to care for all animals no matter what shape or size.

Here are the steps you must follow:
1- Confirm that your dog is classified as an XL bully
2- Apply for a Certificate of Exemption
3- Microchip your dog
4- Neuter your dog
5- Keep your dog on a lead and always muzzled when in public

This week veterinary surgeon Bronwyn performed a stitch up๐Ÿ‘ฉโ€โš•๏ธ

Wherever possible, a wound will be closed and sutured in order to speed healing. However, if there is gross contamination or a deep infection present, the wound will be left open for topical treatment.
stitches are used to bring tissues together so that there is minimal โ€œdead spaceโ€ and wound complication.

After surgery, the pet will be sent home with instructions on how to care for the stitches, making sure they remain in place for the full recovery.

Depending on the technique used, some stitches will need to be removed 10- 14 days after the procedure. Others may be dissolvable.๐Ÿ‘ฉโ€โš•๏ธ๐Ÿ”

Leading our surgical team today is our Senior Surgeon Mark ๐Ÿ‘จโ€โš•๏ธ

The first procedure was patella surgery ๐Ÿฉบ

Luxating patella is a condition where the knee cap (patella) slips out of place. The patella is a small bone that sits in a groove in the femur called the trochlear groove. When the knee moves, the patella rides up and down in the groove. If the kneecap is not functioning properly, it may luxate or pop in and out of the groove, causing discomfort and pain. ๐Ÿฆด

Brunoโ€™s battle ๐Ÿ’ช๐Ÿ’š

10 month old mini lop Bruno needed a whole team effort when he sadly contracted myxomatosis.
Brunoโ€™s symptoms started with a mild sneeze which rapidly developed swollen eyes, ears, nose and ge****ls. Within 24hrs his eyes developed puss filled lumps, he had black circles and scabs in his ears and could barely breathe.
Myxomatosis is almost always fatal in unvaccinated rabbits but thankfully as Bruno was fully vaccinated and fully protected with parasiticides, the affect of the virus was much less.

With medication prescribed by vet Harrison, intensive nursing from Team Briar and superb care from his owner, we are so happy to let you know that Bruno has made a full recovery!!! ๐Ÿ†

Beautiful Badger came to see Canterbury Veterinary Surgery today for thyroid bloods. Here she is taking her daily medication. After Badger struggled taking her tablets, we found that she takes the liquid form of her medication easily. Much less stress for both her and her owner.

If your pet needs meds donโ€™t forget to tell us if you struggle to give tablets to your pet, or if your lifestyle makes things tricky. We will always work with you to find the solution that works best for you both โค๏ธ๐Ÿพ๐Ÿ˜ป

๐Ÿ’š Meet Rodney๐Ÿ’š

Rodney was found by a member of the public hiding in a garden, and extremely lame on his back leg. He was taken in by a local charity and came to us for X-rays of his poorly leg. As you can see from the X-ray his leg was badly fractures and had been for some time.

Rodney had a very old fracture of the leg that needed urgent help. This is where our amazing Streatham hill team stepped in to help.

Due to the age of the fracture the best course of treatment was to amputate his leg. Our incredible Vet Mimi carried out this surgery on Sunday and now Rodney is so much more comfortable ๐Ÿ˜ป

We wish you a speedy recovery Rodney!

๐Ÿข Meet Ferrari ๐Ÿข

Ferrari paid a visit to our exotic enthusiast Kimelle at Mead Veterinary Centre with an upper respiratory infection.๐Ÿฉบ

Upper respiratory tract disease is very common in tortoises.
Symptoms will include a runny nose and usually ear nasal discharge.
There can also be accompanying discharge from the eyes and even swelling to this area. ๐Ÿ‘€
They will slow down, and appetite will be reduced.

A respiratory infection in a tortoise can be very serious. This is because of the anatomy of the tortoises respiratory tract.

Tortoises do not have a diaphragm, which serves as a partition between the chest and abdomen.

This means that any mucus that forms can not be coughed up out of the lungs but accumulates there, seriously compromising the functioning of the lungs.

A respiratory infection is treated with prescribed mediation and environment care.
Typically, it's good to raise the temperature of a sick tortoises environment slightly as this will assist its natural body defences to fight off the infection.

Life saving surgery this weekโ€ฆ.

In the early hours of Thursday morning our amazing team at Briar House Veterinary Surgery jumped into action to save Mayhemโ€™s life when they took an out of hours phone callโ€ฆ. Mayhem was suffering with a Gastric Dilatation and Volvulus - or GDV - which is where the stomach bloats and twists - this condition is an extreme emergency and requires immediate surgery.

Luckily Enrico, Katie and Naomi took her swiftly to surgery and around 4am Thursday morning, Mayhem was in recovery. She was under critical monitoring while in recovery but was super strong and by the next evening, she was discharged to her doting and super attentive owners for recuperation!

Get well soon Mayhem and again another fab case for Team Briar!! ๐Ÿ˜

๐ŸŽ‰ Happy endings ๐ŸŽ‰
Yesterday at Mead Veterinary Centre, a member of the public found a dog which she believed to be a stray.๐Ÿ•
She picked the dog up and brought her in to be scanned for a microchip.๐Ÿพ
Luckily for us, this beautiful girl had a chip, and all the details were up to date. ๐ŸŽ‰
We looked up her details, to which we found her name was Murphy, and we were able to find her owns.
Upon collection, we were told that Murphy had gone missing on the 18th of July, and her family had been searching high and low for her.
Posters were printed, and social media posts had been made, but there had been no sighting of Murphy at all.
You can just imagine how happy not just mummy and daddy were but also how happy Murphy was to see them again.
We do love a happy ending.๐ŸŽŠ
Thank you to everyone involved in the search for Murphy and to the lovely lady who found Murphy and brought her straight to us โค๏ธ

Here is gorgeous Roxy, pictured with our practice manager Jane from Canterbury Veterinary Surgery. Roxy came in to us as she had been vomiting and not feeling herself. X-rays revealed she had a very gassy stomach.

We gave her some fluids and started her on some medication to make her feel better.

Repeat x-rays this evening show the gas moving through her large intestines so we know the medication is helping do the trick. The dark areas you can see in the x-ray here are the pockets of gas moving through Roxyโ€™s gastrointestinal system. Sheโ€™s been very brave today and was an absolute star โญ๏ธ๐Ÿพ๐Ÿ’š

Little Rosie visited our Corner Veterinary Clinic recently to be neutered ๐Ÿ’š๐Ÿฑ

Not everyone likes to use a buster collar after their pet's surgery, otherwise fondly referred to as the โ€˜cone of shameโ€™. ๐Ÿ˜ฟ

Today, at Mead Veterinary Centre, veterinary surgeon Mark's salter harris 3 fracture repair๐Ÿ‘จโ€โš•๏ธ

It was so lovely to see these photos of gorgeous Ernie recuperating at home with his loving family.
He has such a happy smiley face ๐Ÿ’š๐Ÿ’š๐Ÿ’š
Poor Ernie had visited Lakeview Veterinary Centre because he was not feeling himself, and initial treatment was not working.

While under general anaesthesia radiographs were taken of Ernie's gastrointestinal tract to help with his diagnosis.

Although an obvious foreign body was not evident on Ernie's radiographs, their brilliant experienced Veterinary Surgeon Babiker was able to visualize a build up of fluid and gas and along with his previous findings and physical examination it was suspected that he had a foreign body!!!!

A exploratory laparotomy was performed which enabled him to further explore the contents of Ernie's abdomen, stomach and intestines where a mass of string material was found.

You can see below the content being removed from his intestine!!!
We are so pleased you're back to your normal self, Ernie!

If you suspect that your pet has eaten something don't hesitate to call or bring them to one of our surgeries. Your pet can potentially become quite ill.

Symptoms of an obstruction or ingestion of other items include:

Loss of or reduced appetite

Vomiting

Lip smacking or drooling

Absence of faeces or diarrhoea

Dehydration

Lethargic, not being themselves

Signs of abdominal discomfort such as reluctance to move and crying out

Swollen abdomen
