Today we wanted to give ourselves a pat on the back and mention the great work of our equine programme.

The aim of our equine programme is to improve the lives of working equidae (horses, donkeys and mules) throughout Greece. This is achieved through our outreach visits which are undertaken throughout the year, all across Greece.

We focus our efforts on rural and/or isolated areas where owners have little or no access to trained professionals and where traditional practices that can be either ineffective or positively harmful are still widespread.

This project is unique in Greece in delivering not only treatment and care but, crucially, in adding to the knowledge and skills of local owners; building their capacity to look after the animals on which they rely after our team has left the area.

Our equine outreaches wouldn’t be possible without our equine care programme coordinator, Elisa Geskou and the fantastic team consisting Tasos, Alkis, Kostas and Varios.

Greece is currently facing extremely high temperatures and animals across the country are suffering.

Please help stray animals by providing fresh water in a clean bowl outside of your home or business. It is a very simple act of kindness that can have a huge positive impact.

Introducing the beautiful Ghost! 👻

Ghost was one of the hundreds of dogs rescued from horrendous conditions at a landfill site in Topeiros, Northern Greece.

When we found her, she was suffering from severe mange and had lost much of her fur, as you can see in the first few images.

Thanks to the generous support of Greater Good Charities, we were able to provide the treatment she desperately needed. In the last few photos, you can see her fur growing back beautifully and her skin looking much healthier.

We are deeply grateful to Greater Good Charities for their unwavering support and dedication to helping the vulnerable animals of Greece.

Earlier this year, we received a request from the Management Unit of the Samaria National Forest Park to provide our dental technician services to their dedicated working equines. Always eager to contribute to their wellbeing, we responded with enthusiasm.

Alkis, our Equine Dental Technician (EDT), had the pleasure of examining and treating several hardworking mules and horses. Our efforts focused on addressing recurring dental issues, ensuring these essential animals remain healthy and comfortable.

We are deeply grateful to the park's staff, especially Maria Axypolitou, for their efforts to ensure the animals' welfare. A special mention to Mr. Marcos and Mr. Andreas, whose patience and dedication greatly support our work.

These equines are the backbone of the park, playing a crucial role in maintaining the area's biodiversity and aiding visitors. Ensuring their health is our way of thanking them for their tireless service.

This week is and today we wanted to talk about the thousands of horses, donkeys and other equines involved in tourism practices across Greece.

Working equids do not normally fall under the legislation for agricultural or companion animals, which can put their welfare at risk. It is therefore crucial that we, as people and tourists, advocate for these animals by making sure they are in good condition.

In this carousel we highlight best practices for equines in tourism. Please swipe until the end.

Recently, we were thrilled to support ARTEMIS-Φιλοζωικός Σύλλογος Εθελοντών Βόρειας Εύβοιας, an animal welfare clinic based in Taxiarchis, by providing a bath to ease the suffering of the many stray animals they care for.

Many animals arrive in poor condition, often covered in dirt and parasites, or with overgrown fur, mange and leishmania. We're pleased to offer this bath to help soothe these vulnerable animals in need.

Despite the daily struggles we face, we are very proud of what we have been able to achieve in over 50 years as a charity.

One of our milestones was back in 2012, after a six year campaign run by led by Animal Action Greece and Animal Defenders International (ADI), and backed by over 50 Greek local animal protection groups, the Greek Government finally passed a law banning the use of all animals in circuses.

The ban came after our continuous efforts of pressuring the government, especially after our collection of 15,000 signatures urging the Ministry of Rural Development and Foods to put an end to this horrible practice. As a result, in 2015 Greece proudly became the second country in Europe to ban all animals in circuses!

We have since been campaigning alongside Eurogroup for Animals to ban the use of wild animals in circuses across the EU. The sad truth is that 254 circuses across 14 European countries still use wild animals. It’s time for the rest of Europe to follow suit, and set an example to the rest of the world, that animals suffering for human entertainment is not acceptable.

It’s with your help that we are able to achieve such great things for animals. Thank-you!

We are very pleased to share that throughout the months of April and May we were able to assist in sterilising a further 329 cats on the islands of Paros & Antiparos, bringing our total since the start of the project to 2,443 cats sterilised.

The project is being implemented with the support of Battersea and the two municipalities, Δήμος Αντιπάρου / Municipality of Antiparos and Municipality of Paros

The project wouldn’t be such a continued success without the dedicated work of Cats of Antiparos, Cats Eden in Paros-La banda di Casa Elea, Paroscat, PAWS - Paros Animal Welfare Society and Φιλόζωοι Εθελοντές Πάρου (FEP Vet Centre) huge thanks to them for their hard work and dedication. 🙏

This poor girl named Molly was recently found amongst a stray colony on Paros, by our friends from Paroscat.

As you can see in the pictures she was found in a horrific condition. She was extremely weak, dehydrated and full of pus due to a serve infection.

She was quickly taken to the vets where she was given heavy antibiotic treatment and IV fluids. Luckily this drained the pus from her nose and she was able to eat again to the point where she put on a bit of weight.

Too date she is still exceptionally weak and is being fostered by the Paroscat team.

We were happy to support Paroscat by providing urgent funds for her treatment.

We are praying for the best for this gorgeous girl.

Cats can be difficult to read.

Cats by nature will not show clear signs if they are feeling unwell, and if they do, it could be too late.

A cat in pain is seen as weak- therefore, making them prime targets for predators. In order to survive, they have adapted a deep natural instinct to hide their pain and sickness.

The key is to observe the cat closely to see if their behaviour has changed…

🧶 Have they stopped eating or playing?

🐈 Are they less active or lethargic?

🐾 Are they unable to walk or heavy breathing?

🤤 Have you noticed them drooling and/or do they have a dirty coat?

All the above are signs that a cat needs urgent medical attention.

Whether you are watching over a stray cat and/or colony or have a cat of your own at home, it’s important to learn the signs.

Pictured below is beautiful Ronti,

Ronti was one of the 600 dogs found living in horrific conditions on a landfill site in Topeiros, Northern Greece. Abandoned as a puppy, he was almost hairless due to mange and very skinny.

We were happy to pay for his treatment, sterilisation and vaccinations and we are pleased to say he has now travelled to Athens to join his new family.

Join us in sending good luck and love Ronti in his new home! 🐾

We are delighted to announce that as of today, Kopenhagen Fur, the largest fur auction house in Europe with a 100-year history, has permanently closed.

Kopenhagen Fur had the largest number of clients in Europe, including breeders, clothing companies, designers, manufacturers, retailers, and pharmacists within Greece.

Over the years, Kopenhagen Fur also financially supported all the fur exhibitions held within Greece as the main sponsor.

This is yet another significant development highlighting the decline of the fur industry across Europe and a further step towards ending this dreadful practice. We will continue to campaign for the eradication of the use of animal fur and we hope for a completely in future.

4 REASONS WHY YOU SHOULD FOSTER AN ANIMAL:

1️⃣ Simply put, you could save an animal’s life: In some circumstances shelter animals are euthanised after a defined stay in the shelter. So, every animal that finds a foster home may help to reduce a shelter’s euthanasia rate.

2️⃣ Fostering helps animals that are highly stressed in a shelter, particularly older dogs and cats and animals which have experienced cruelty, although shelter staff do their best for each animal, they do not have enough time to give the individual care some animals may need.

3️⃣ You will help to increase your foster pet’s chance of being adopted: Your care will help prepare your foster animal for adoption, helping them to learn to live in a home environment, socialising them with other people and animals and helping them to adapt to new experiences.

4️⃣ Goodbye means a happy end: Mostly, ‘goodbye’ is referred to the passing of a pet but in this case, your tears are tears of joy when your foster animal finds their forever home.

If you have the time and space in your home, we recommend reaching out to your local animal shelter to see if they need any help with fostering. You could change an animals life for the better. ❤️

If you foster an animal, please post a picture of them below and share their story, we would love to hear all about them! 👇

Today is National Animal Rights Day.

National Animal Rights Day is being observed in nearly 200 locations worldwide, with over 20 events taking place across the UK alone.

These gatherings include solemn memorials, marches, and educational outreach, aiming to unite animal rights supporters and inform the public about the urgent need for animal liberation.

So today let’s come together to recognise and respect the rights of all animals. Our planet is theirs too.

Join us in raising awareness and advocating for the voiceless. Together, we can create a world where every animal is treated with compassion and dignity.

If you agree, please share and spread the word on this important day.

In late March, we visited the island of Andros in the Cyclades.

Our team traveled to 24 different villages over four days, providing dental, farriery, and vet treatment to 75 equines.

We’re proud to say the outreach was a great success, with many owners returning with their animals, showing significant improvements from past visits.

A big thank you to Fast Ferries for the ferry tickets, Andros Municipality, local sponsors, and our wonderful organisers Julia Joyce and Petros Vassiliadis for their invaluable support.

We were also touched by the warm hospitality and positive responses from local owners.

We look forward to visiting again next year!
