Today the puppies are 6 weeks old.
This is a big date for the pups. They are almost fully weaned now as their mum is mostly done, they get told off by her quite a lot now and they're learning fast. Most of all their toileting is now done outside, there was one p**p on the puppy pad last night and a few pees, all daytime toileting is pretty much nailed ✅
If you have bought a puppy from a fantastic breeder they should be housetrained by the time they leave at 8 weeks old.

People always ask, how can I take other people's dogs into my home for training or foster a dog and then give them back/re-home them... Don't I get too attached?

Working with other people's dogs is a bit like watching a movie, a mini journey that you go on together. Some dogs you get more attached to than others, they are the really enjoyable movies that you wish you hadn't watched so you could watch them again for the first time.
Some dogs are more difficult, these are the movies that challenge your perceptions on what you think you know and maybe you learn something.

But what I have with my own dog is an intricate novel that has been carefully weaved and crafted over a decade, thousands of days poured into a tapestry, a story that will one day be finished but will live in the library of eternity of bonds that could never be broken. Even if someone tried to translate the novel into a script, then make the movie it still wouldn't capture but a drop of the real thing.

And that's how I do it. My relationship with my dog grounds me and keeps everything in perspective. If I kept every dog I wanted to keep, my precious relationship with my own dog would get more and more diluted with every dog that stayed.

I always say never trust a dog trainer who doesn't have their own dog, this is for many reasons, here is one.

These pups are now in their Primary Socialisation Period. Stay tuned for their training programme which will be starting next week when they will be 4 weeks old, we'll be starting with toilet training (technically we already started with truffle training and with handling but this will be more specifically developed also) 🐾

Behaviour is shaped by ✅Success and ❌Failure.

Behaviours that bring successful outcomes repeat. Behaviours that result in failed attempts cease.

Dogs bite because everything else they've tried has failed - biting works successfully.

Dogs sit and stare at you/paw at you/bark at you because it *successfully* gets your attention.

Applied to the news I have accidentally come across this week, it looks like this:

Cesar Millan is unlikely to change his methods to become more ethical because what he does now, has built a fortune.

Rishi Sunak doesn't care about the future of the Country or creating lasting change or anything of real benefit because he's just joined the rich list.

The Global political sh*t storm functions the way it does because it can and successfully generates the money for the people in power making the decisions.

We look at our phones last thing at night and first thing in the morning because it successfully satisfies our cravings for dopamine.

You can apply 'Success and Failure' to any behaviour and that in itself will provide you with a path to changing behaviour. Whether that be your own, your dogs' or people in your life...
NB (technically you can only change your own behaviour but that has the power to influence others)

There are more superior ways to train your dog with Positive Reinforcement than just flinging treats at them repetitively.

I'm not saying don't use treats, there's definitely a place for them. I'm saying the first two options foster connection and relationship, where as the last option doesn't in many situations. (It can work to build a connection in cases of neglect for example)

All I'm seeing on my feed for the last few weeks is people flinging treats at their dogs, so I'm just gonna leave this post here as a reminder. 🐾

Our relationships with our dogs are like any other relationship, they ebb and flow and find their grove, they can support and nourish, they can also deplete and distract.

Part of a healthy relationship is respecting each others boundaries. This goes both ways. Contrary to popular belief, your dog will not always feel like showing up for you. News flash, you will not always feel like showing up for your dog either.
That's ok, communicating your boundaries with each other only supports the creation of a strong, healthy, respectful relationship.

I say go 'away' to my dogs because they can need more than I am able to give them, are in the way of where I need to go, are being intense with visitors, are wet or muddy or I'm busy or I've had an argument or I don't feel like I have enough energy to share with them sometimes. I don't have a problem communicating this with them because I am aware that this is life and setting and maintaining boundaries is a normal part of relating.

Many of my clients and perhaps you guys too, feel guilty for creating space and boundaries in your relationship with your dog. The thought of telling your dog to 'go away' for some people, moves them to tears.

That's ok.

My job as a behaviourist is to advocate for your dog and communicate what your dog needs, which is more often than not, space and boundaries.

But what I really want to help with is Why? Why do people feel riddled with guilt at the thought of temporarily turning their dog away?

I feel perhaps it is to do with deep memories of rejection in childhood. Those times we desperately needed connection, love, reassurance from someone close to us and we were denied it

As a parent myself now I understand the importance of self care and how operating from an empty cup impacts all my relationships, but realistically my cup is not always full and we are all doingbthe best we can by those we love, even the generations that came before me.

It's ok, to say Away

Away = not right now please, I need to do me, I will come back to you when and I can, and it will be better for both of us that way. 💕

I don't think any dog breeds should be banned, we created them and they are our responsibility.

I do however believe the further breeding of inappropriate or deformed dog breeds should be banned.

As a society we should be putting a lot of pressure on dog breeders.

There's no world in which it's ok or acceptable for dogs not to be able to give birth naturally, breathe independently of intervention or where a puppy needs surgery to survive.

My goal ultimately, is to educate myself out of a job. I imagine that one day, what I have to say about our relationships with our dogs will be useless because it's common knowledge and our dogs and ourselves will be so much happier for it.

How long do we think it will take before our awareness is such that people will feel empathetic and uncomfortable choosing deformed dogs subjected to a life of suffering and no one shouts "Don't worry, he's friendly!" anymore?

Does your dog like to hide/chill/sleep under furniture?

This is typically a behaviour of dogs that have a less stable nervous system, Choleric or Melancholic (see previous posts).

These dogs like small, dark spaces that make them feel safe and secure.

If you don't want them to go under your furniture, you can make them a cosy den in a more appropriate area. Often these dogs prefer to have access to a crate and like calm environments.

These dogs can have a lower tolerance for younger children and their energetic, rapid and unpredictable movements.
