Blythwood Vets is part of Linnaeus Veterinary Ltd (A Mars Company). Our clinics are located in Hatch End, Bushey, Northwood and Stanmore.

We are a small group of veterinary surgeries focused on small animal care located in North London. We offer a friendly, experienced veterinary service; many of our staff and clients have been with us for many years. You can reach us 7 days a week and outside of our normal opening hours offer a 24 hour emergency service.

Do you know what illnesses affect rabbits the most?

As prey animals, rabbits hide pain and illness well. Therefore, it is very important for your rabbit to have a check-up at least once a year to detect any underlying issues or detect and potential problems early on.

To keep your rabbit fit and healthy, we recommend carrying out the following checks at home:

👁️ Eyes: Ensure your rabbit’s eyes are clear, shiny and free from discharge

👂 Ears: Ensure your rabbit’s ears are free from discharge and no mites are present

👄 Mouth: Ensure your rabbit’s mouth is free from drooling and there is no swelling present around the cheek areas

🐰Skin and coat: Ensure your rabbit is appropriately groomed, looking out for any fur that may be matted and bald patches, as well as mites. (If matted fur is present, a vet visit would be necessary as rabbit skin is extremely delicate, and a home groom may cut the skin)

💅 Nails: Ensure your rabbit’s nails are not overgrowing or curling

🐇 Bottom: Ensure your rabbit bottom is free from faeces and urine staining. If faeces are present, they should be gently washed away, and the area needs to be dried thoroughly. Rabbits with faeces on their bottoms are more at risk of flystrike.

🐇Rabbits are active animals and need an environment with plenty of room to hop, binky, run, dig, stretch out and stand tall...

It is very important to provide your rabbit with ample space to stretch, run, lie down, and binky. Did you know that there are guidelines for minimum space requirements for housing rabbits, whether they live inside or out?

The RSPCA advises that rabbits need the below as a minimum space requirement for two average-sized rabbits. But, of course, if you can provide more space, that is even better for your rabbit’s welfare.

A hutch should be permanently attached to a larger run to ensure they can exercise freely, such as rabbit friendly room indoors or a larger secure run outdoors.

It’s recommended it is at least 2m long x 60cm wide x 60 cm tall to house two paired rabbits, which they have access to at all times, so they can move freely and explore as they would if they were wild rabbits.

Top tips:
🐰It is important to note that the space must be across a single level, so raised hutches within the space will not count towards the minimum space requirement.

🐰If you can provide free-range space, that is even better, but please ensure roaming is supervised.

🐰 Most importantly, the bigger the space, the more room they will have to exercise and keep in shape!

🐇 Angora Rabbits 🐇

Lily is an Angora rabbit, which is a breed known for their very long fur, that is used to make wool. Their fur requires a lot of care and daily grooming.

Lily's owners recently rescued her and despite the owners' best efforts, Lily's fur was unmanageably matted, so they brought her in to see us. Due to the extent of her matting, she had to be admitted to our hospital for a full groom, which took our vets and nurses over 4 hours in total, to shave it all off. As you can see, Lily looked like a completely different rabbit following her groom and significantly lighter!

Tips on grooming Rabbits:
🐇 use a soft bristle brush or a rubber brush
🐇 use a slicker brush for long haired rabbits
🐇 use slow strokes in the direction of hair growth
🐇 take care around eyes and ears
🐇 use little force
🐇 keep bottom area nice and tidy
🐇 keep nails at a reasonable length

☝️Most importantly, keep your rabbit at a healthy weight so they can groom themselves and replacing soiled bedding daily. Especially in the hot weather, their bum/genitals should be checked daily and cleaned if necessary to prevent build-up of faeces or urine in the fur, as this can lead to skin infections and fly strike if unnoticed.

🐰 This week is Rabbit Awareness Week, and this year's theme is 'Healthy Diet, Happy Bunnies', so today, we wanted to share a little more about the importance of a balanced diet.

Rabbits require a diet based on 80% grass or feeding hay, 15% greens, 5% good-quality pellets or nuggets (around one egg cup twice a day), and fresh water.

Feeding nuggets ensures your rabbit eats a balanced diet, as it won't have the option to 'selective feed' by picking its favourite parts out of a mixed diet.

Feeding the correct diet is probably the single most important way to ensure a healthy and long-lived rabbit. Here are six top tips for ensuring your rabbit has a balanced diet...

🐇💧 You should ensure that your rabbit always has access to fresh, clean drinking water.

🐇🌿 When providing food for your rabbit, fresh grass is the preferred choice, but when not available, hay is a good substitute that is available all year round and provides them with the nutrients they require.

🐇🌾Hay provides lots of long-strand fibre, keeping your rabbit's gut moving. It is also the closest thing to a natural diet. Rabbits would naturally graze all day in the wild, so please ensure your rabbit has an unlimited supply.

🐇 🥗 Complete rabbit food is also available, but it should not be used as a replacement for hay. Please use it as a nutritional supplement.

🐇🥦 Many plants can be safely enjoyed by rabbits, including broccoli, parsley, spring greens, and dandelions. They also love the leaves from an apple or hazel tree. When feeding them plants, you should keep the portion sizes to a minimum.

🐇🥕 Fruits should be counted as a treat for your rabbit as they are high in sugar. Your rabbit may enjoy a grape, slice of apple, slice of orange or carrots.

From contact with other animals to exploring the great outdoors, our pets have plenty of opportunities to pick up nasty parasites daily.

Parasites can negatively affect pets' and humans' health, so it is important to ensure your pet is protected against them.

Parasites are a common occurrence in the UK, and our pets are particularly vulnerable to them. Some of the most prevalent parasites found here are:

🦟 Ticks: Tick bites can pass on diseases such as Lymes Disease and cause allergic reactions or infections at the site of the bite.

🐛 Worms: There is a wide variety of worms, such as tapeworms, roundworms, heartworms, whipworms, and hookworms.

🐛Lungworm: Lungworms are potentially deadly parasites carried by foxes, slugs and snails.

🕷️ Fleas: Fleas affect dogs and cats and can be seen all year round. Signs that your pet may be suffering from fleas include itching, scratching and licking. You may also see 'flea dirt' – tiny dark specks that look a little like grains of soil and go red when wet.

😺 Today, in England, it is a compulsory requirement to microchip your cat before it reaches the age of 20 weeks.

If your cat is older than 20 weeks and is not microchipped, book an appointment to have one implanted.

If your cat is already microchipped, the law also requires that the details associated with the chip be up to date, so please check that your pet's microchip details are up to date.

Did you know? The hot summer months create an increase in toxic blue-green algae across the UK.

This may appear as green or greenish-brown scum or foam on the water surface and contains toxins harmful to animals. It is not actually an algae but an accumulation of cyanobacteria. Dogs often swallow it by drinking water from an affected lake, river, or pond or by licking their fur after swimming. If you think blue-green algae is present, do not let your dog near it.

Unfortunately, the toxins can cause severe liver damage and can ultimately be fatal. There are currently no known preventative medicines, and prompt veterinary treatment is essential to ensure any chance of recovery.

😺 Don't chip away at your cat's safety!

In a week, it will become compulsory for all cats to have a microchip. Cats must be microchipped before they turn 20 weeks old, and their owner's contact information must be accurately maintained in a designated pet microchipping registry.

Owners who fail to comply with this regulation will have 21 days to implant a microchip, or they may be subjected to a fine of up to £500.

If your cat has not yet been microchipped, book an appointment today. Microchipping increases the likelihood of being reunited with your cat if it becomes lost and provides a permanent and reliable method of pet identification.

✨🦴TPLO🦴✨

Meet Otto, a very handsome crossbreed. He came to us with a suspected ruptured cruciate.
A ruptured cruciate can be uncomfortable and cause non weight bearing lameness.

What is a ruptured cruciate?
This is when the cranial ligament tears or ruptures causing the knee joint to become unstable. This is very similar to an ACL rupture in humans.

We booked Otto in for a TPLO (tibial plateau levelling osteotomy). This is where the angle of the shin bone is changed, done but cutting and rotating it into a new position and securing with screws and plates. We asked Dr Martin, an external orthopaedic surgeon, to complete this procedure for us. He brings all his own equipment and completes the surgery in about an hour.

Ottos surgery was successful and he is recovering well. He went home with instructions to be crate rested for the next 14 days to make sure the initial healing goes well.

We will see Otto four weeks post surgery to take repeat X-rays.

✨🦷🪥Dental care 🪥🦷✨

Sally the Siamese was reported to have a reduced appetite and weight loss. Due to her temperament she was unable to be examined conscious, so our vets sedated Sally to be able to have a good look in her mouth.

They discovered a large build up of tartar and a broken canine. Our vet gave her teeth a good clean under anaesthetic along with removing all remaining teeth but 3 canines.

Doing this procedure means Sally will be more comfortable and will be able to build her appetite and put on weight. Our pets are still able to eat even with minimal teeth.
We promote good dental hygiene to reduce the risk of dental disease. These are some before and after pictures of Sally’s teeth.

👨‍⚕️👩‍⚕️ Student Veterinary Nurses are working towards completing a qualification with a college or a university to become Registered Veterinary Nurses. While training, our students enrol in the RCVS and complete practical training.

Practical experience is a vital part of veterinary nurse training for our students. Our practice team supports them, providing supervision and guidance to assist them with developing their knowledge and clinical skills. This experience, alongside their qualification, prepares them to complete the roles that a Registered Veterinary Nurse undertakes.

When aspiring to become a Registered Veterinary Nurse (RVN), you have two distinct paths to choose from. You can either pursue a vocational (diploma) route, which offers an on-the-job training option. You can also complete a higher education (degree) route, which provides you with the opportunity to experience university life whilst training. Both routes lead to registration as a veterinary nurse with the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (RCVS).

We encourage progression and growth and enjoy celebrating our Student Veterinary Nurses when they graduate and become a Registered Veterinary Nurse. 💚
