Fireworks can be absolutely terrifying for some dogs. What can you do to help them?
Create a Safe Space
Set up a quiet, cosy area where your dog can retreat. Use blankets, toys, and even their crate if they like it. Close windows, curtains, and doors to minimise sound and light flashes.
Stay Calm and Comforting
Dogs often take cues from their owners. Stay calm and keep to your usual routine. Simply being near them can be reassuring if they need comfort.
Use Calming Products
Consider natural calming aids like Pet Remedy sprays, calming collars, or other dog-safe products (consult your vet first). Many dogs also find comfort in anxiety wraps like Thundershirts, which apply gentle pressure to help soothe them.
Play White Noise or Music
Drown out the fireworks by playing calming music or white noise. There are playlists on YouTube and apps designed specifically to calm dogs, which can help mask the noise of fireworks.
Distract with Toys or Treats
Give your dog a favourite chew toy or a puzzle toy filled with treats. These can be great distractions and help them focus on something enjoyable instead of the noise outside.
