I used to laugh at people who would sit and talk about their dogs,
As if animals were capable of providing a friendship.
And don't get me started on the people who actually slept next to their dogs.
I don't think I understood it fully
Until each time I stepped away, you were there
Every time I got up, you followed.
If I gasped, you turned your head,
If I even sneezed, you ran to me.
When I would cry
You really thought your kisses would take away the tears,
And when you saw they couldn't
You decided to curl up in my lap until the tears stopped
It didn't matter what I did or didn't do, you were there.
Even on the days I don't think I'll make it through,
I know you are at home waiting for me,
You are at our home.
Despite what happened
If I was gone for 5 minutes or 5 hours
You jump and squeal with excitement the exact same way.
I am now saddened by the people that don't see the gift we have in dogs
Because you, my boy,
Are not only my friend,
But my best friend.
And you, my boy,
Will always have whatever spot you want on our bed.
Because I recognise the agonising truth that while I am your entire life,
You will only be here for a portion of mine.
But I promise you, my boy,
The impact you had on my heart will be forever💜
