Let's discuss pricing!
As a small business (and I'm sure I'm not alone here!), I sometimes hear comments about how my items are "too expensive" or "cost too much", but then I see large companies charging triple, sometimes more, for the same products.
Let's look at this Brooch for example. £520 for a safety pin with 12 single crochet stitches. Now granted, this may be gold plated or solid gold, but if I as a small business tried to sell this exact same item for the same price, I'd be told it's too expensive or it costs too much. However, no one would think twice about the price from a larger company.
Now, here's the points to consider:
-A larger company has access to machinery and multiple employees to make these items, I am only one person and everything is made by hand.
-A larger company don't have management or CEOS dealing with customers directly, this is handled by their Customer Service departments, sales teams and stockists. As a small business, I handle every sale, customer enquiry, and stock.
-Larger companies have multiple avenues their products travel through before they reach the customer. As a small business, my products are only ever handled by me from start to finish. So from the first stitch, right until your item leaves me, I am the only person who handles your item.
Small businesses often get overlooked because they aren't as well known, they don't have a big name or reputation, but with shopping small, you support a big dream. Yes every business starts small, but many large businesses use their large names to overcharge their customers for exactly the same products produced by a smaller business.
